    - forest prep fails. I am trying to install exchange 2003 enterprise on a 2003 enterprise server in a 2000 domain. I cannot get forest prep or domain prep to finish without errors. I thought it was a DNS issue but netdiag shows nothing wrong. I am using the domain admin login and password. I get through a large part of the Forest prep and then it stops with a generic error message as follows: A problem has been encountered in the Microsoft Exchange Forest Preperation setup component. Cancelling setup. Under the error the task bar stops at finalizing organizational container creation. The exchange server setup progress log notes that the version of forest prep and domain prep are 6903 and 6936 I can submit the exchange server setup log but it is fairly lengthy. There are no errors in the apps or system log. Can I "unprep" the forest and try again. Is there something else that I may be missing. It was a five minute install at class.     - Exc2003 AD requirements Hi, I'm upgrading my NT 4.0 domain and Exchange 5.5 to Windows 2003 AD and Exchange 2003, these are the steps I'm planning to run: 1.: Install new NT 4.0 BDC on new hardware 2.: Take one BDC offline for backup 3.: Promote BDC from step 1 to PDC (this should demote the existing PDC to a BDC) 4.: Upgrade the PDC to Windows 2003 and Active Directory native mode with permissions compatible with pre-win2k DC's (in this case the NT 4.0 BDC's not upgradet yet) 5.: Install Windows 2003 member server and Exchange 2003 Now this is my question, can I install Exc2003 in the domain when there's still NT 4.0 BDC's ??? The reason that I don't want to upgrade these BDC's yet is because they also run some mission critical applications that I can't just upgrade and have them running on Win2003, and since there's no way to downgrade a NT 4.0 BDC to a member server, I'm stuck with them untill they a decomissioned/or crashed :) Best regards, Hans Tag: Migration Exchange 5.5 to 2003 Tag: 116059

    - Exchange 2003 and ISA 2004 on same machine? I started playing with Windows 2003 Server after downloading the trial from the MS website and also got ISA 2004 BETA 2 and Exchange 2003. I have exchange and ISA installed on the same system and it connects to a router. the router is a hardware router. the server has 2 net cards, both on the same network (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.3). the router (192.168.1.254) is forwarding all port 80 traffic to the ISA Server, which is then forwarding it to a linux box on the network, and also certin traffic to my windows XP workstation for test sites. I currently have port 25 forwarded to my linux box which is getting mail for my domain (lotas-smartman.net). I want exchange to get the mail as it will do a better job then the linux box. I set up a domain on the network (lotas-smartman.local) but cant figure out how to get exhange to get email from that domain. I *think* its the ISA server, but i could be wrong. has anyone tried anything like this? anyone got an exchange and ISA server sitting on the same box? any tips? Thanks.     - Macintosh Entourage Clients - Exchange win2k3 We are using Exchange win2k3 and have one mac client who used to connect using outlook 2001 for the mac, but recently upgraded to entourage and now all the folders appear as email as upposed to calendars, contacts and tasks.     - domain names Hello : I am in the development phase of e2k3 , the problem that I have is that my internal domain name is mail.dal.xyz.com 10.0.17.250 ==> this is connected to our active directory. I have another NIC on that server on DMZ With 10.1.0.99 ==> directed to an external IP which resolves to mail.domainname.com , here is my dilemma : whenever I send an email to an outside email address it shows user@mail.domainname .com which I had to change the user's email address from AD.     - URL links OWA 2003 I've got a problem with an OWA 2003 install. In order to facilitate logins (only username) to OWA 2003 without the need for a UPN or UNC, I merely unchecked 'Integrated Windows Authentication' under Exchange System Manager...http...exchange properties.... This works fine, and the user does not have to add domain\username or username@domain.com, but when emailed a URL link, and upon clicking that link, the user is asked to log on for a second time. This also happens when the user clicks on the log off button. I have the same setup on an Exchange 2000 server for a different client, and this all works fine including the URL links.     - Address Books Hello experts! I have just implemented Exchange 2003 with Outlook. There is one minor annoyance with regard to the address books. When people click the 'to' button in a new email to view their contacts, the Global Address Book is displayed first instead. Now, I know that each client can go into the address book and change which one is the default, but I was hoping that there is a server side setting which would change everyone's default address book to their own contacts instead of the global address book?     - ES2003 from Exchange 5.5 Hello, I need help setting up our new ES2003 system. Here's our current setup: Win2k AD native mode, 2 sites (a.org and b.com) each with its own Win2k member servers acting as Exchange 5.5 servers. We have 2 new and powerful servers that came with Windows Server 2003 pre-installed. These new machines will be used as our new mail servers. We plan to install on Site A Exchange 2003 Enterprise, while Site B will have Exchange 2003 Standard. I have read the ES2003 deployment guide as well as a lot of the newsgroup articles about this particular type of installation, and the more I read the less confident I get about performing this upgrade. Our plan is to join our new ES2003 servers to the existing 5.5 organisation, starting with Site A. I've also read a lot about problems with LDAP ports and connection agreements not working as they should. 1. Can I install ES2003 on my new server as it stands, i.e. as a member server and not a DC? 2. What port should I change the Exchang 5.5 LDAP to when creating the connection agreements, and do I have to revert back to the default settings after the connections have been established or can the port stay on its setting? 3. As I plan to move the Exchange 5.5 mailboxes to the new ES2003 server, will I have to turn the old server off after I have done so before proceeding to upgrade Site B? 4. Will Site B be able to send and receive messages to and from Site A while the upgrade takes place on the latter, bearing in mind that I will have to perform forestprep and domainprep which will affect Site B.     - 2 exchange servers in 2 domains I currently have a watchguard firebox with two domains behind it. The domains are using the same ip/subnet scheme. Both domains have their own Exchange server, one is 2000 and the other is 2003. Everything seems to be working great, with the exception of one small detail. You cannot email from domain1 to domain2. Emailing to the outside world works great, along with incoming, as well as within each domain. When I try to email domain2 from domain1, I check the message tracker. We are planning on replacing this with a new server running Exchange 2003 Standard Server (since Enterprise is more than we require).     - Second Email-Domain I will like to include a second Domain in the Exchange Server Enterprise 2003. In Recipeint Policies the 2 Domain are there. In IM SMTP General I have use DNS to each address space to this connector. ( No sure if is OK) I have a local bridgehead, ServerName. In address space I have two entries, one with an asterisk, and the other one with the secondar domain. The "Allow messages to be relayed to these domains" is not checked.     - Exchange 5.5 to 2003 Hi, I have four offices connected via satellite lines. All have seperate domains, Windows 2000 AD, and Exchange 5.5 SP4 boxes for messaging system. All are connected via site connectors. I need to start planning an upgrade of Exchange 5.5 to 2003. As these are effectively different sites in different companies, it would be best if I could keep these as they are now, but that is not possible with Exchange 2003. I think I am going to have have to bite the big one, and merge them into an Active Directory forest, and connect that way. Is there a way round this?     - Forms-Based Authentication Hi guys/gals, I've just completed the process to enable OWA w/ SSL (using a certificate purchased from a well-known CA). While that works perfectly, I've been unable to get it to work in conjunction with forms based authentication. I've enabled forms based authentication (FBA), but when I try to access my mailbox via OWA (https://<<exchangeserver>>/exchange), I get a "Page not available, HTTP 500 Internal Server Error". When I turn off FBA and return to plain ol' SSL, that works okay. I'd really like to get FBA to work because of the default login page as well as being able to choose between seeing the premium vs. basic OWA choice as well as choosing whether you are logging in from a public or private computer. I suspect this has something to do with permissions. I've checked the permissions on the \exchange, \exchweb, and \public folders under IIS, but all of the permissions seem to be the same as the ones I use in my AD lab (where FBA works fine, strangely enough). I can set up a Windows Domain, making this Server the PDC. Will I run in to problems because I have a private LAN and because I do not have DNS setup? What other problems might I run in to?     - Straight upgrade from 5.5 to 2003 ?? I didn't see any upgrade plans along these lines. What I was planning to do was take the data from our old NT/5.5 system and restore it to a new server.     - Local Domain name and Exchange domain name Hello, I'm about to start working on a network with a single domain name i.e. "network". the network has a win2003 server and 40 clients, working fine. the domain name for e-mail is @network.org and my question is if there is any relations between the two, meaning, if I install the exchange (on the same server as the DC), make sure that my ISP dns MX record will point all @network.org to my public IP and I will configure the users email addresses to match what it is now (@network.org), it should work right? (although the LAN domain name is plain "network") I know this is not desireable but this is the way the network was configured and changing the domain now is too complicated. Thanks! Dan.     - Exchange 5.5 Users to Exchange 2003 Hi, We are moving existing Exchange 5.5 Clients over to a new SBS 2003 Server and need to know whats the best way to move the clients without joining the SBS 2003 and the old network together. We are thinking of archiving the users mailboxes to their computers (users use the same pc every day) and removing the Exchange 5.5. Then connecting them to the new Server and getting the mail back and their folders from the Archive File. Is this possible or is there a better way to do it without actually making the SBS2003 join the old network. Also, do we need to make the exact same usernames on the new server to allow the archiving to take effect on the new accounts? Or can we organise the users into a new username format and still upload old mail into the mailbox? Any way to even copy the mail store on the 5.5 onto a DVD or something, then inserting it into the new server and putting the mail boxes back? Any suggestions for resolving this? Regards Chris White.     - Ghost of all old 5.5 server in Esm 2003 I think I have imperfectly removed a "last 5.5 server" from my org, and I need some advice on how to clean it up. I just migrated from NT4sp6a/Ex5.5 sp4 to Win203/Exchange 203. I joined my 2003 server to the existing 5.5 Organization and used the Active Directory Connector to replicate information during the move, as well as various migration tools to move all the mailboxes, etc. After following the "Removing last 5.5 server" and "preparing for Native mode" type whitepapers, and using the Exchange 5.5 Manager to successfully remove the 5.5 server, and waiting for replication, I find that the 5.5 server is still listed under Servers in Exchange System Manager. Also, although I have removed all the connectors from ADC, it refuses to uninstall, claiming that it still has existing connection agreements. Obviously , I have done something wrong with the removal. Now, the 5.5 has been shut down for days now with no (apparent) ill effects, so it can't be that bad. I would like to get everything straightened up before it comes back to haunt me, so I would appreciate any advice on how to clean this up. After doing some web searches, I've seen some mention of "ADSI edit" , but I don't know what this tool is, so I'm not sure if it's appropriate. Thanks for any advice!     - E2K3 on multiple domains and 2 DCs Hello. I am going to implement E2K3 on 2 Windows Servers. One is a DC in the forest root called : root.com and the second will also be a DC in a child domain called child.root.com. The domain child.root.com is in a branch office in a different geo location. The servers will be working in the same administrative group but in different routing groups and will be accepting mail for root.com only (there will not be a child.root.com mail domain).     - DSConfigSum Tool error (Exchange 2003) Hi When I am running the DSScope scan tool I get the following error when it runs the DSConfigSun: Error: Could not connect to the Exchange 5.5 server 'pandora'. Tools that require an Exchange 5.5 server will not run.(Pandora is my Exchange 5.5 server) I have 2 sites configured in the 5.5 org. Does that cause a problem. My LDAP port is configured to default.     - Rebuilding Exchange 2003 server I have run out of disk space on my Exchange 2003 server. What is the best way to remedy...(I currently only have one exchange server). Option 1: Backup the info stores, rebuild the server with the new hard drives, then restore the info stores. Option 2: Build a 2nd exchange server, move everything to the new server, take down the first server (following the MS guidelines for removing the first exchange server), rebuild with new hardware, move everything back from the 2nd server, shut down the 2nd server. The first option sounds easier - but I don't know if there are any issues I should watch out for. I will be rebuilding with the same name/IP address/etc...just a change of hard drives...     - Strange Exchange 2003/Outlook 2003 behavior In an office of 8 workstations (all with XP Pro and Office 2003 Pro) with a Windows 2003 Small Business Server running Exchange, 3 are doing something strange that is driving them crazy. Each day Outlook (or Exchange?) takes previously read mail still in the Inbox and changes the date to the current date and changes the type to bold, indicating unread. Two others do not have the option of sharing their calendar. When you go to the same place that we went to share calendars on the others, there is no link or button to click to share the calendar.     - Migrating/moving Exchange 5.5 mailboxes to Exchange Server 2003 Hello, I've scoured through many documentations and even newsgroups regarding this subject, but to no avail. We have the following setup in our company: W2k AD (native mode), W2k member server with SP4 running Exchange 5.5 with SP3. We have a new server with Windows Server 2003 and have recently installed on it Exchange Server 2003, opting to join the existing Exchange 5.5 organisation. First off, the problems with ADC, which I think we sorted by changing the LDAP port on the Exchange 5.5 server to 389. After the connection agreements were set in place, all the permissions on the maiboxes were changed to 'Custom', which in effect denies the user access to his or her mailbox. We decided that we may be able to 'resolve' this problem by moving the mailboxes to the new Exchange 2003 server. However, when we begin moving even just a single mailbox, an error message appears stating that the Information Store is unavailable. We've retraced our steps and can confirm that we did the installation as per Microsoft's instructions. We also did the connection agreements again, but still face the same problems. The information store on the Exchange 5.5 server is active and available so I'm not sure how to proceed next.     - Installation questions Hi I Basically have registered about 40 domain names on the internet, almost all of them I want to have mail boxes. I have 10 cal's All I want to have is basically about 7 users having multiple mail boxes across the diffrent domains. Is it easy and most important possible to set up exchange to get mail from all of these domains if I point the MX records to my server? Also Is it fairly easy to install? This now is not too important, but I want to host a free email service for the public on my server, I currently own a mdaemon unlimited license that is now at the end of upgrade protection, but I still own the license for unlimited users on the version I currently have. I do not want this to go to waiste. I understand that the installation for this will be my responsibility and I will have to get support form them, but can exchange be on the same server with this, and will it work correctly? Finally, I do not need any anti spam software, as currently the worst I get is about 10-20 emails a day, and it isnt to hard just to press delete instead of paying thousands!     - Cleanup after migration to Exchange 2003 part 2 Hi I've finished migrating from an Exchange 5.5 org with 4 sites to an Exchange 2003 org that also has the 4 sites as AGs. I have also switched to native mode. Followed the instructions to the letter as specified in the deployment wizard tool and also the deployment guide. Are there any docs on how to collapse the old AGs into one and move all the servers into the one AG, or can this be done. There are also routing groups in all 4 AGs. That means that the company.net dns points to their ip address.     - [URGENT PLEASE] Exch55 public folders not appearing after rebuild I have had to do a server recovery onto a new server with a new name owing to complete hardware failure. Installed everything okay, and recovered from tape okay. Did the DS/IS reconciliation as per normal, and had to rebuild the user lists (all done). There are three public folders though that now are now visible but inaccessible at the client. They give the error "contents currently unavailable. Either the Exchange server servicing this public folder is down or the public folder has not been replicated" with an ID number of 80004005-0507-00000000 when you try to do a "properties" in the Exchange Administrator. Now I assume that its because the server name has changed, but I cannot do anything about that. I have the data on a tape (and have recovered it to the server) but it appears that it won't display it because it thinks the master copy is on another machine somewhere??! I have had the same problem. Make sure the trust to the
domain in which the exchange service account is located,
is available.

I have been getting the same error migrating 5.5 to 2000, on seperate boxes. I have tried KB: 297921, 283178, 289101, 325319, 327005. They either don't work or are not applicable.
