    - OWA not working after install Migrating from 5.5 and I have only done this in a test lab but it went fine there. But after the install, OWA page (locally on server) returns the Under Construction page at http://server and the 404 page at http://server/exchange.     - Upgrade NT4.0 w/5.5 to 2003 Hello, I have an NT4.0 domain, 1 server - PDC with exchange 5.5 - server A, 1 server - BDC with exchange 5.5 - server B. The BDC will be moved to my location for the project but lives in the next state, connects via point to point I have new hardware ready to go and bring the domain up to 2003. I have reviewed lots of the postings and just want to verify info. So...please advise and correct as necessary, I do not want this to generate a resume. 1. install NT 4.0 on new server, join domain and install as a BDC, (I have forgotten how to do this, last time was years ago). 2. promote to PDC - or transfer, again I have forgotten how to do this. At this point I shoud have the AD at 2003 mixed mode? What should I check, etc... 3. have a 2003 server join the domain, run forest and domain prep, install exchange 2003 on this new member server. 4. migrate/transfer the mailboxes from the bdc that was the pdc (server A) to the new exchange server. 5. for the bdc that lives in the other state (server B), should I make a 2003 domain controller and install exchange, then transfer mailboxes from server B? I am concerned that if this replacement server is not a DC and running exchange, if the link goes down users at the remote site will not be able to log in and get email. 6. unplug existing NT 4 BDC/exchange boxes and see how they work Additional Questions: 1. The domain is called XYZ, however the email addresses are XYZInc.com. When I upgrade the domain I would like to call it XYZ.local. How/when in the Exchange 5.5 upgrade do I force it to use XYZInc.com for the email address? Also, what about the user login? If I name my domain XYZ.local, won't users have to type in username@XYZ.local to log in? Is there a way to force it to use username@XYZlocal.com without naming the domain that? 2. How will the security for passwords transfer over? I currently do not have complex requirements, so how does AD work if you upgrade to 2003? Will I have to set complex requirements or are they default? I assume user accounts get upgraded, and you deal complex password requirements after the upgrade? 3. The exchange 5.5 store is just about at the size limit, will moving mailboxes cause me any grief? 4. How do I deal with the exchange server renaming? Is it easier just to have users attach to the new server through mail setup? Any scripts or logon bats to help here? 5. Will hidden mail boxes give me problems? 6. Do the Outlook users that currently connect to the 5.5 server have an OST type file, and will changing servers do anything to this?     - Client vs Server storage I'm installing an Exchange 2003 server soon and was just wondering what the MVPs and other knowledgables thought about POP3 vs SMTP. This will be a local network (for about 20 clients) plus internet email server. My thoughts are that POP3 is good in that it doesn't lock up Outlook if the Exchange server is down, but that SMTP is better for centralized data storage and backup.     - New Server Revisted Back on May 7, 2006 I posted the following: "Getting a new server with 146 GB HD's only for Exchange Server 2003. Is there any logical reason why we would want to partition the HD's since Exchange Server is the only thing on this new server?". There were 10 responses with 7 telling what RAID level and partitions to have. Only 3 gave me any insight as to why I would want to partition this sucker. Here are the specs: We are a small business with 10 users now and possibly going to 15 users (I told you we were small!). The new server is a Dell PE1800, dual 3.2 Xeon processors, 2 GB memory and 3 - 160GB SATA Drives in RAID 5. I am tired of SCSI. The server is in house, so lets not debate SCSI v. SATA. So, back to the original question, why would we want to partition anything (I want redundancy) if Exchange Server is the only thing running on this machine ?     - SMTP problem after migration - appears to be Hi Migrated Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 SP2 into single site org. cuurently have the exch2000 and exchange 2003 server running in same org. All appears to be well, so i decided to migrate 1 user to the exch2003 as a test, which migrated ok. I have not moved system folders or anything else, as i simply wanted to test connectivity and internal routing. the migrated user can send email externally but cannot receive any external email, all external email stays in the queue on the exch2000 server. I copied all settings on the exch2000 server to the exch2003 server in regards to SMTP settings (which includes a smart host pointing as ISP) Any ideas how i should go about rectifying this issue, before moving forward with remainder of migration. I was under the impression that all mail would automatically route from the exch2000 to exch2003 server in the same org.     - Conversion to Exchange Native Mode My environment is this: - The current Exchange 2000 server was upgraded in-place from Exchange 5.5 (we only have a single server for mail; so there's no more Exchange 5.5 servers in the company after it was upgraded) - The current plan is to do an in-place upgrade from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003. My question is in regard to converting to Exchange native mode on KB272314. The second part of the article says to use the Exchange 5.5 Administrator to connect to the SRS and then deleted old Exchange 5.5 servers etc. and then use Exchange System Manager to delete the SRS. My problem is that SRS has already been deleted quite a while ago on Exchange System Manager. I mean, I cannot use the Exchange 5.5 Administrator to connect to the SRS.     - Setting permissions I have been tasked with setting up a new MS Exchange cluster to back up to the Legato NetWorker server that I manage. I know nothing about Exchange and all my colleagues are new to it as well. I am a Unix/Mac guy so I know very little about Exchange and Windows account management and evidently, no one else here does either. We are setting this system up for a few individuals who need the features that Exchange and Outlook offer, in case anyone is wondering. According to the Legato NetWorker Exchange Module's documentation, I need an account. I need an account that has the following Exchange permissions: List contents Read Properties Administer Information Store View Information Store status Receive as Send as So my question, keeping in mind that I have no clue about Exchange or Windows administration is, how do I create an account that has those attributes? I will pass this information over to the system manager who I believe has the authority to do such things on our cluster. As it is, when I asked him about this, all I got was a blank look and the online help under the Exchange Systems Manager left me unenlightened. Any help will be appreciated.     - Migrating from 5.5 Hello guys: Today I have 2 domains that I'm trying to convert to one, there is not problem, the problem is that I could have 2 logon users for the same person, so I found that I changing the user from 5.5 the NT user selecting to my AD user, that works wonderful, but, the problem is i have 500 users in both domains, are there any scripting code that I can use, or if I have to write it there is no problem just i need to know which parameters i need to know, i.e. in windows 2003 exist a scriptable command line program to create user, user password, etc. Exist something like that for Exchange 5.5?     - Public Folders replication issues Hi All, I've been having fun with a 2000 to 2003 sparate new hardware migration. Not. There were multiple issues with the install but I traced most of them to using Smarhost. Anyway I can now see the replicated folders (I couldn't before) on the new e3k box from the MMC. A newly created user on e3k can see via OWA 3k only calendar information. He also gets access denied messages to some shared items and can not see posted doc, contacts or tasks inside other folders. Hi, I have installed SP2 yesterday and on one of my server, every 5 min. this error can be seen in the event viewer: Event Id: 9098: The MAD Monitoring thread was unable to read its configuration from the DS, error '0x80004005'. It's weird because i never had this error before and SP2 is supposed to resolve it.     - winxp and office 2000 prf I have a mixed invironment with Windows 2000, Windows XP, Office 2000/2003 standard/2003 Small biz i wrote a little app in vb that detects os/outlook version based on the pc name, copies anything important over (prf, or newprof.exe in the case of outlook 2000) and everything works fine. except outlook 2000 on a windows xp machine. when i try to shell newprof.exe -p "profilepathhere" which the profile gets edited on the local machine to include the username for that profile, for whatever reason, it doesnt pull that name out of the profile correctly, or loses the data somewhere along the line. every part of the operation works fine except that, so you end up with an error message stating that "could not resolve name to a mailbox in exchange" or some similar equivelant. so the program runs, you get this message, it shows the exchange server name, but nothing in the username. I have tried different formats for winxp and office 2k, with reguards to username: first.last first last first.last@domain.com first last@domain.com doesnt seem to matter at all. seems like some error in the newprof.exe when run in xp. I take the same thing to a machine with windows 2000 and it works like a champ. and the other versions of office install like its nobodys business. I dont know how to troubleshoot this issue so im at a loss. all my app does is change the mailboxname=%replacename%, a variable i put in the file so i could find and replace with the users name, in the prf file to the user's login name. and then shell either outlook or newprof.exe with a path to the prf file. should be simple and, in all other versions of os' and office, it is. thanks in advance. and if im not clear enough, let me know and i will try to explain better.     - OWA access issue Here's my issue. Brand new installation of Windows 2003, SP1, dcpromo, IIS install (in that order). IIS works fine. Installed Sharpoint Services 2.0 with SP2. Works fine. Installation of Exchange 2003. Regular functions (mail etc all ok). Point at OWA: http://server_name/exchange - prompted for username and password. I use the domain administrator account. IE shows a "The page cannot be found" error Decide to Service Pack 2 Exchange 2003. Patch works Try the OWA URL again. Fail. All the other Exchange web sites fail as well (same error). I've checked all the security permission on IIS and at folder level, and they all seem fine. If i'm using the default Domain Administrator account it really shouldn't be a permissions issue.     - Exchange 2003 AD Properties not Showing up in W2k Domain ADUC. We are running a test migration from 5.5 to 2k3. After running the install (incl. the forest prep, domin prep and all other checklists), the Exchange tabs do not show up in our Windows 2000 DC for user properties. They do if we are on the Exchange 2003 box running the Active Directory User and Computers. I imagine if we were on a W2k3 domain, this would've populated the DC ADUC settings...?     - Message body disappears when reply or forwarded Hi, I have an Exchange 2003 user. When he forwards or reply's to an email only the last email is copied in to the new mail. I run a 2003 Exchange system with multiple servers including Blackberry (the problem user is also a Blackberry user). All Servers are SP2 and fully patched. At first I did think it maybe Blackberry related however I have other Blackberry users who do not have any problems. I'm unable to find anything on the web that relates to this problem.     - Exchange Virtual Server There are some setting on the SMTP Virtual Server from Exchange that I need some information about. The Limit number of connections check box, what is a recommended number for that and what exactly are the connects that use that. Does this have to do with regular email? I'm have a bad spam issue and although I have spam software, I'm wondering if limiting the connections will help. I have it set to 15. Any information on this would be appreciated. Network admins can allow for me port forwarding (via firewall) through public IP to my-server-internal-address. It says that when switching from mixed mode to native mode make sure "your organization does not use any connectors or gateway programs that run only in Exchange Server 5.5".     - Exchange 2000 in-place to 2003 Hi, Step 3 of the Exchange Deployment Tool says to remove the Instant Messaging, Lotus cc:Mail, MS Mail connector, etc components before the upgrade. We are not using any of these components but I see them in the Exchange System Manager. My question is how do I uninstall these components? It says to run Exchange setup to uninstall but which setup? Do I use the Exchange 2000 CD or the Exchange 2003 CD? Also, I see "Connector for MS SchedulePlus FreeBusy" on the Connectors.     - Frontend/Backend configuration problems (RPC and HTTP) I recently introduced a new Exchange 2003 SP2 server into my network with the idea of making the new server a back-end server and using our current 2003 SP2 Exchange server as a front-end server. 1st thing I did was move all mailboxes off the current Exchange server to the new Exchange server. I then set the new server as a back-end server and set the old server as a front-end server in ESM. Mail routes fine and my MAPI clients connect to the new server flawlessly. OWA works with no problems. The original server had RPC over HTTP configured on it and was running with out a problem. Since the migration I can no longer get RPC over HTTP to work. Also my users can not sync any more with Active sync from their WM5 devices. I figured this would be a seamless migration since those services were working properly on the standalone system but now they seem to be FUBAR :( All the docs I've read about a Front-end/Back-end scenario make it seem so easy. all that needs to be edited are the server properties in ESM.     - RPC-HTTP could be the death of me Ok i know this is beating a dead horse but I cannot get RPC-HTTP configured correctly. I have read almost all the docs from Microsoft and a few from various internet sites such as this one. From the inside of my network, Outlook works fine, my problem is connecting on the outside. No matter what I try, I get the same error "The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be....". This is my current setup: Exchange Server: I am running SBS2003 with Exchange. This is the only server I am using. I installed the RPC proxy service and I have configured the rpc site in IIS to have anonymous access, integrated access and basic authentication. (does basic have to be the only box checked?) Client Computer: I am running XP SP2. Outlook is configured for MS Exchange. The Exchange name is the local address of my server (what.ever.local). In the "more settings" page, connect using Internet Explorer or a 3rd party dialer is selected. The "Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP" is selected. In the Exchange proxy settings the URL for the Exchange proxy is my normal url. (what.ever.com) "Connect using SSL", and "Mutally autenticate session when connecting with SSL" are selected. The principal name for my proxy server is msstd:what.ever.com. Both connect on fast/slow using HTTP first and then TCP/IP are checked. Basic Authentication is selected. I have followed all the documents, even the one on RWW. Yet, from the outside, nothing seems to work. I have configured Outlook to use the Exchange as a POP3 server just to test connectivity and that worked with no problem. Do I have to open any ports on my router/firewall to allow RPC for Outlook?     - Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003 SP1 (W2K3 R2) migration upgrade I have a Windows 2003 Active Directory single site network, which is running Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2000 DC. I have a new server assigned to replace the existing exchange 2000 server. The existing server is a DC but all FSMO roles are on a Windows 2003 DC Essentially all i want to do is upgrade exchange onto the new box and remove exchange 2000 and DC. The new server will end up running Windows 2003 R2 and Exchange 2003 SP1, SP2 to go on at a later date. Can you let me know the processes required in order to achieve this..     - PL2 Exchange 2003 Time Hi, I currently have an Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 server. I am moving mailboxes to the new Exchange 2003 server. I've noticed one of the mailboxes (reception mailbox) receives emails, but the time of email is always one hour behind. I did an email test and emails are received immediately but the time received is alwatys 1 hour behind. I have checked the time of the DC's and Exchange servers and server times are OK. I did the same test to my mailbox and received times are corrct. Nobody else in our organisation have flagged up any issues. Any ideas where's it taking the time from?     - Exchange Server Dependencies on Domain Controller(s) I created the following network: 1) Created new Forest/Domain by installing Win 2003 Server on new machine and creating first domain controller. 2) Setup an additional domain controller in same domain for redundancy. Each DC also acts as DHCP and DNS servers. Replication established. Everything works fine. 3) Installed Exchange Server on third machine. Performed all required preparation steps: Forest Prep, Domain Prep, etc. Exchange Server is successfully send/receiving email over internet. Also accessible from Outlook and OWA. Everything appears fine. 4) If AD Server #1 (First server setup above) is unavailable (but Server #2 IS availabl) when Exchange server is restarted, the Exchange services do not start and exchange is not available. Can anyone help me to understand if this is normal behavior. Is there something incorrect in the configurations? How do I establish highest degree of fault tolerance with respect to my AD servers? I am looking for some guidelines to seprate AD and Exchange from our
parent company.

The current setup is that our domain is under our parent company and
our exchange server 2k3 is in their exchange organization. We are
completely separating from their network to form our own structure. My
question is how can I separate our domain abc.ca and the exchange
server from their AD forest?
