Basic setup question from the Exchange challenged.
Exchange has always managed to bite me in the ass at interviews, and
it's doing it now. I have a basic question about setting up the SMTP
connector.
We have a customer whose e-mail is hosted by a third party. POP mail
is fine being retrieved by the client (tried the connector and didn't
really like it). However, when I go to configure the SMTP connector, I
can get e-mail out, but regardless of how I set the reply address, it's
being stripped and replaced with the name of the SMTP server. For
example, the e-mail address would be name@domain.com, and when it's
sent, the recipient receives something from name@wrongdomain.net. Now
given that I can actually get this resolved, this is only for one
account. I had to set up the SMTP connector using the e-mail account
information for one person, and I'm doubting it's going to work if I
try to send mail as someone else.
The whole point may be moot. Now that they're on SBS 2003, I'm going
to try and push them to host their own e-mail. However, I am curious
what's going on.

Storage Group
We have one Exchange Server for our organization, supporting approximately
400 users. I am a little concerned about the size of the Exchange Database
(currently 102GB). I know we should be implementing Quotas, archiving, etc.,
but our budget at present doesn't allow for this (we are working towards
this...but meeting resistance of course).
Microsoft doesn't recommend the database being larger then 100GB, due to
performance issues, etc., but our server is not showing any signs of issues.
However, we are thinking of splitting up the mailboxes, to reduce the size
of the database. That being the case, I had a couple of questions:
1) For this to work, do I have to create another Administrative Group??
2) If I don't have to create another Administrative Group, I guess I would
just create a new Mailbox Store??
3) If I create a new Mailbox Store, does that reduce the size of the
database, or is it still running on one database??
We don't have the resources at present to buy another Exchange Server, so we
are going to have to run with 1. I want to implment Archiving, but due to
agency requirements, this archiving needs to be seamless to our user
community (so...PST files are not the best option...would like to archive to
SQL).

Remove Exchange
I actually have the reverse of setup and installation.
We have migrated to a new 2003 domain, but still have a working trust from
our old domain.
In that domain, there is one DC, and one 2003 Exchange Server. I have found
a couple of technet articles, but I am a little confused as to the exact
process of completely removing an Exchange box from the domain. We need to
the old domain for a while yet, so we want to make sure the removal does not
have a negative impact.
I have removed all Exchange Mailboxes from the old domain, and am ready to
begin removing all Exchange components. I read an article on Exchange 2000,
that talked about running update.exe /removeorg and the re-running forestprep
and domainprep. (KB273478)
However, on another article that talked about removing Exchange 2003 (KB
833396) it does not describe the same process. Sounds like all I do is
delete the mailboxes, remove Exchange, delete the server account, and I am
done.
Looking for guidance before I do anything permanent (and stupid...lol) Tag: how to set FQDN for SMTP/Exchange Tag: 148468
Outside emails into public folders
I need to have emails sent to sales@domain.com from outside a SBS2003 network
end up in a public folder called Messages.
I have looked at this article http://www.msexchange.org/articles/MF021.html
but I canâ??t see how using the POP3 connector that would work.
Am I asking the impossible or do I need to change over to SMTP for email
collection?

Exchange Will Look for Any DC?
To Whom Can Help:
I have a DC installed on a primary server. There is also a Exchange server
on the same server. I installed a second Exchange server on a second member
server with the intention of migrating the data off the primary Exchange
server to the second Exchange server. I understand that Exchange is tightly
integrated with AD. The second server used the DC on the first server for
it's installation. I found out today that the second server has to be
promoted to a DC and that the primary server will be completely removed from
the network.
I came up with possible steps to preserve the Exchange server on the second
server:
1 Create a DNS server on the second server
2 Do a zone transfer from the first machine to the second
3 Promote the member server to a DC (change the DNS network settings on the
second server to point to itself prior to promotion)
4 Transfer FSMO roles to the new DC
5 Transfer the email mailbox etc.
The real question is: Will the Exchange server on the second server still
work if the second server is promoted to a DC and the primary server is
removed from the network? Are steps above correct and all there?

New to ISA2004 and FE Exchange 2003
Hello everyone,
Sorry if this has been asked/posted before.
My senerio is this. I presently have an exchange 2003 server. I resently
built a DMZ and installed an ISA 2004 box.
I want to install exchange 2003 in the DMZ but am not certain of the process
and am worried about messing up my VERY stable existing exchange server. How
do I install exchange on the DMZ server if it is not part of the existing
domain/forest because the ISA server is between them. Sorry for my lack of
understanding here. :-(
Is there any documentation that would walk me step by step on how to add the
FE 2003 server into the DMZ and change the certification to the FE from the
backend etc.??

Exchange setup /disasterrecovery not reading config from AD
Hi all,
I hope someone can help with this problem.
We are preforming a /Disasterrecovery installation of Microsoft Exchange
2003 on new hardware in our DR facility.
This facility in normally live (with its own DC/GC), but we isolate it for
the purpose of our DR trial.
Our DR procedure for e2k3 is identical to the " How to move exchange 2003 to
new hardware" procedures found in the following articles.
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Recovering-Failed-Exchange-2003-Member-Server-Using-Disaster-Recovery-Switch.html
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/guides/SvrConsUsingE2k3/454d6010-ce35-4b50-91e0-49d342f7ce46.mspx?mfr=true
The problem is that during the installation (setup.exe /disasterrecovery,
then choose disater recovery on the component selection screen), we are then
prompted for the Administrative group that server should eb a part of.
This should not happen... the setup program should read the existing
exchange configuration from AD and install as the replacement server.
has anyone seen this before??
We have checked the following:
* Sufficient rights to the exchange org for the account we are using to run
Setup
* Can communicate with a Dc/GC
* Information under configuration partition ->Services->Microsoft
exchange->Orgname->Administrative groups->Admin group name is all correct
Thanks for any assistance,
Cheers,

Can not connect to new Exchange 2003 server using OWA 2003
I have one front-end/OWA server running Exchange 2003 standard and two
back-end servers running Exchange 2003 enterprise, I can connect to my
mailbox through OWA when it is on back-end server 1, but when I move my
mailbox to back-end server 2, I get a HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized error.
I can connect to my mailbox using OWA on the server locally. I have

be the same. Both of the back-end servers have the same firewall rules

Public Folder replica server dead, now error trying to open Public Folders in System Manager
I have a client that recently moved all Exchange 2003 mailboxes and public
folders from an existing Exchange 2003 server to a new Exchange 2003 server.
The existing/old exchange server died unexpectedly before they deleted the
existing exchange server as a replica. The public folders are working fine
from the client end since everyone connects to the new server and public
folders replication completed before the old server died. However, I am
having trouble openning the properties of the "Public Folder" folder inside
System Manager on the new server. While trying to go to the Properties of
Public Folder, the system manager would display a message stating that "the
HTTP service is not available......" ( i do not have the full message at
this time). Going under the "Public Folders" folder under the new server
would display the folder structure but shoots out the same error message
when I attempt to view the properties of any folder. Needless to say, I can
not delete the now invalid replica from the dead old exchange server. How
can I forcibly do this without hosing the public folder structure on the new
server?

Installing Exchange 2000 ESM on XP Pro
Is it possible to install the Exchange 2000 ESm snap-in on a Windows XP Pro
machine for remote administration?
I have tried running the Exchange 2000 setup on my XP Pro Machine and it
states the Exchange Management tools cannot be installed because the Windows
2000 Administration tolls are not installed. I attempted to install the
ADMINPAK.MSI from my Windows 2000 Server disc. The ADMINPAK installs fine,
but when I attempt to add any of the snapins to my MMC, I get nothing but
errors.
So, I uninstalled the Windows 2000 Administration Tools, downloaded and
installed the Windows Server 2003 Administration tools from Microsoft ( as it
stated it was also for Windows 2000 Server) and all my snapins work
fine...(ADUC, IIS etc). I can now manage my Windows 2000 servers from my
member XP Pro machine.
So I went back and re-tried to install the Exchange Management Tools from my
Exchange CD to no avail; still comes up I need to install the Windows 2000
Administration tools.

NLB
We have two back-end exchange 2003 sp2 servers clustered running on dual xeon
CPUs and hosting over 300 mailboxes, where only about 100 are users and are
really active. All end users use outlook 2003 and very few users use OWA.
Can I somehow load balance user connections, but I am not refering to OWA.
Is there a way to use NLB with exchange and can outlook be configured to
connect to the NLB address opposed to the back-end servers. Currently we have
a single front-end server, but even if that name is used in outlook
configuration it will re-points to the actual cluster hosting the mailbox
upon connection?

Repeatedly prompted for Credentials accessing OWA
I'm having trouble deploying OWA to allow connections from outside my LAN. I
can access OWA with no problem from inside my LAN
(http://servername/exchange).
I have a single static IP that is filtered through my router. HTTP ports
80/443 go to server 192.168.254.xxx and SMTP port 25 go to server
192.168.254.xxx.
In order to access OWA I have configured the following:
1) Opened port 6040 at my router and forward requests to my Exchange server
192.168.254.xxx
2) Set IIS on my Exchange Server to listen on port 6040.
I can access OWA fine from my LAN at http://servername:6040/exchange. When i
try to access OWA externally, I am prompted for my credentials as expected
but when I enter Username, Password and Domain I am repeatedly asked for my
credentials until until I get the dreaded 'Error: Access is Denied' page. I

RPC over HTTPS
I'm working on setting up RPC over HTTPS on a single server, but I have a
quick question. The requirements for the server are: RPC over HTTP/S
requires Windows Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2003. RPC over HTTP/S also
requires Windows Server 2003 in a Global Catalog role.
Does this mean they have put an exchange 2003 on a windows 2003 global

have your exchange server be a global catalog. I'm I wrong?

New Exchange 2003 regional office server not routing mail back to HQ
We have a regional office which has a server that doubles as a Windows
2000 domain controller / dns server and an Exchange 2000 server. This
office connects to our main HQ via a DSL line, and we have routing
groups and connectors for both the regional office and HQ. This has all
worked fine for several years, but we are upgrading the email system to
Exchange 2003 (the HQ has already been done). Accordingly, I built a
new Exchange 2003 server on the HQ network, and then shipped it out to
the regional office, but I have a problem that all mail to and from
mailboxes on this server just gets stuck in the queue for 'HQ to
regional office link', and does not get delivered. I then changed the
IP address, flushed the dns cache, and re registered DNS entry. I also
changed the default gateway and the default DNS server to values
appropriate to the regional office LAN. Basically, as far as I can see
the new server is set up the same as the existing server, and it is a
member of the correct routing group in ESM. I have also set it as an
additional remote bridgehead for the link coming from our HQ
(incidentally, I tried removing it from here too, but it did not make a
difference).
The message tracker facility failed to shed much light on this but the
log for one message is as follows:
SMTP: Message submitted to advanced queuing
SMTP: Started message submission to advanced queue
SMTP: Message submitted to categorizer
SMTP: Message categorized and queued for routing
SMTP: Message queued for local delivery
SMTP: Message delivered delivered locally to testuser@mydomain.com
SMTP: Non Delivered report (NDR) generated
However, I did get a message from the the HQ account I used when I
tried to email an account based on the new regional server:
The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report
a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails,
contact your system administrator.
<newregionalserver.mydomain #5.0.0>
On another message, the message tracker is more comprehensive. "Message
routed and queued for remote delivery" occurs repeatedly at two
seperate times in the day. It appears the server tried to send it
through this route, but it failed, so the process went right back to
advanced queuing again.
I do not understand why the old server works with the same settings,
but the new one does not. Any advice gratefully received. Tag: how to set FQDN for SMTP/Exchange Tag: 148407
Exchange 2K3 SP2 install on Server 2K3 sp1
We have an exchange server 2003 I am trying to install SP2 and I get an error
that says I must have exchange server 2003 installed before I can install the
upgrade. The version of exchange is 6.5 build = 6944.4
I was not with the company when 2k3 was installed, however I have suspicions
that it was installed over the top of an existing exchange 2000 and the data
store was migrated.
Could the existing exchange 2000 regkeys be confusing the 2k3 SP2 install.
The only remnants I have found of exchange 2000 are a few regkeys, and a
directory with the 2000 sp2 install files in it.
We are running Windows server 2003 standard edition SP1 and Exchange server
2003 enterprise edition.

Add money to your Paypal account with OPRAH 9&,`K
Read this message until the end, and you will find out how the money flows in easy !!!!.
Follow the steps and it WILL work. Trust me !!!!!.
It's NOT illegal and it is NOT a scam !!!!!.
PROVEN ON OPRAH! Reported in the Wall Street Journal!!!!
The only thing you need is : - E-MAIL ACCOUNT
- PREMIER (FREE) or BUSINESS PAYPAL ACCOUNT
- $6 on this account (The only investment)
- 30 minutes of your time
There is no limit on how much money you can recieve, and you haven't got anything to lose with this Business program. I will explain how it works !!!!!.
Follow these 4 easy steps and it WILL work !!!!!.
STEP 1 : SIGN UP FOR A FREE PAYPAL ACCOUNT !!!!!.
Paypal is a free and safe way to pay and receive money on the Internet.
Creating a account is as easy as creating a MSN account.
Copy and paste the next line in your Internet browser and sign up.
Be sure to sign up for a FREE Premier or Business account and not for a Personal account.
You cannot receive CREDITCARD payments with a Personal account and we can't have that. Do we !!!!!.
STEP 2 : SENT $6 TO YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT
This is your only investment to receive the money with ease.
With your Paypal account, send $1 to each e-mailadres listed below.
!!!!! IMPORTANT !!!!! Be sure to use this SUBJECT : *PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST* when you send the money.
1) martine@pilote.net
2) dexxatol@netcourrier.com
3) armygirl8568@hotmail.com
4) comjii@starband.net
5) sinnek@bellsouth.net
6) nsi@nelasat.com
STEP 3 : PUT YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST
After you have send $1 to each e-mail address, put your e-mail address on the 6th place.
Remove e-mail address number 1, and move each e-mail address 1 step up the ladder.
!!!!! IMPORTANT !!!!! BE SURE THAT THE E-MAIL ADDRESS YOU USE IS THE SAME AS YOU USED TO SIGN UP AT PAYPAL.
Remember that this is LEGAL. You are creating a service : an e-mail servicelist.
STEP 4 : UPLOAD OR COPY THIS MESSAGE TO NEWSGROUPS, FORUMS ETC AND EMAIL IT TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS!
There are 32,000 newsgroups. Upload or copy this message to at least 200 newsgroups or forums etc, but ........ remember that the more your upload the more people will see your message and the MORE MONEY WILL FLOW IN.
How to upload to newsgroups and forums? :
After you have followed step 1,2,3 and 4, save this message (and copy so you can use it again).
Use your Internet browser and Outlook Express or another newsreader and try to find FORUMS, NEWSGROUPS,
BULLETIN BOARDS, DISCUSSION GROUPS, CHAT SITES and ONLINE COMMUNITIES. Use GOOGLE or use a NEWSERVER.
Use every option to post this message. Download PostXpert to send 1 message to more NEWSGROUPS at the
same time.
!!!!! REMEMBER !!!!! The more you post this message the more MONEY WILL FLOW IN.
Why does this Business program work so well !!!!!.
Lets asume that from the 200 (or more) messages that you have posted, only 5 people respond, you will have your
$6 back that you have invested. Those 5 people will each send at least 200 messages with your e-mailadres on
number 4. That's 6 x 6 x $1 = $36. The next 25 people will also send 200 messages with your adres on number 3. That's 36 x 6 x $1 = $216. The next 216 people also send 200 messages with your name on number 2. That's 216 x 6
x $1 = $1296!. Those 1296 people again also send 200 messages with your name on number 1. That will give us a total of 1296 x 6 x $1 = $7,776.
Now the last tier! 7776 x 6 x $1 = $46,656!!!!!!
This is only a EXAMPLE with 6 reactions. You WILL get MORE responses than that.
Remember that most newsservers will leave the posted messages on there servers for about 2 weeks. If you will post your message again, it WILL again start from the beginning. So you can repeat this over and over again.
Everyday MILLIONS of people are ONLINE and reading these messages, JUST LIKE YOU RIGHT NOW.
I also was sceptical in the beginning and have read a lot of these messages. I also thought that it was bullshit.
Until I thought : What the hell!, only $6. What's $6 and a couple of minutes of my time to solve my money problems.
!!!!! REMEMBER !!!!! Follow every step, and IT WILL WORK, TRUST ME. !!!!!
!!!!! BEST WISHES AND GOOD LUCK !!!!!

POP3 incoming mail not working
Please help.
I had a nightmareish fortnight - spyware etc (say no more). The bottom line
is I had to reinstall just about everything on our network. There are still a
few things that need sorting but my main problem is as follows:
POP3 accounts do not download on the exchange server
The event log goes
1027 - so I can log into the ISP
1029 - so the user name/password bounces
(this happenes to all my various ISP accounts so it is not an ISP problem.
If I telnet I can log in OK, and if I pop3 into the ISP from a workstation I
can download OK and the email goes into the mailbox also there is still an
error coming up (Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error
(0x8004010F): 'The operation failed. An object could not be found'. I am sure
this is a different issue and I rather sort out one thing at a time but any
ideas are appreciated.
It almost seems as if the username/password is getting scrambled. I checked
for malware - I saw that in one of the discussions in this newsgroup - but
that looked clean.
Of course I could always carry on using the workstation but it feels a bit
like pushing your car around town because you run out of fuel and the engine
would not start.
The registry entries for the POP3 look alright but then I am not sure if
that is the right place to start looking anyway. Tag: how to set FQDN for SMTP/Exchange Tag: 148377

I'm trying to configure OMA for a Win 2003 / Exchange 2003 fully patched =
production server.
This machine is already working properly for Exchange and OWA with a =
valid SSL certand hosting only a single website. All 80 and 443 traffic =
is forwarded from the firewall/router to this server.
When I go to http://FQDN/OMA, I get " A System error has occurred while =
processing your request. Please try again. If the problem persists, =
contact your administrator." The following error is thrown in the event =
log.
Does anybody have any suggestions? I've already tried MSKB 817379 and =
http://www.petri.co.il/configure_oma.htm but they didn't help.
Many thanks,

Exchange Setup
Looking at setting up a pretty basic setup of exchange. Single site.
Local mail as well as hosted domain on server. Don't want to get fancy.
Wondering if there are any good white papers on setup of exchange. Looking
for kind of a step by step what to watch for etc. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

How do I remove a now defunct old domain from our users' email addresses?
We used to have a domain - lets call it olddomain.com - that we sold
off to another company. However, we still have the problem that most of
our existing users (several hundred), have this domain name as an email
alias. Obviously, as the MX records on the internet have changed for
olddomain.com, no one externally is going to email our users using
these addresses but the IT director would like these entries removed
anyway. I do not want to have to remove all of these manually, as that
is an extremely laborious task. Is there a way of removing all of these
entries together?
We have a Windows 2000 domain, and run an Exchange 2003 backend cluster
with an Exchange 2003 front end server. All servers are running the
latest service packs and patches.
Many thanks. Tag: how to set FQDN for SMTP/Exchange Tag: 148367
Second Exchange Server setup
Hello!
We've got an Exchange Server 2003 with SP2 on Windows 2000 DC and Windows
Server 2003 DC. It works without problems.
Recently we bought new server. I've installed Windows Server 2003 and
another instance of Exchange Server 2003 SP2 on it.
Form Based Authentification is enabled. When I try to access OWA - i get an
error 440 Login Timeout.
I tried to reset local IUSR_NEWServer account password , but it did not
help.
Please advise.

Exchange 2003 Mapi32.dll version
I have two servers with Exchange 2003 sp2, one is being used as a Blackberry
server. The mapi32.dll is not the same on both servers. I need to know how to
install mapi32.dll version 6.5.7638.1 on the Blackberry server, currently it
is on version 6.5.6944.0. The cdo.dll's are both 6.5.7638.2. The mismatch is
causing problems with auto reconcilation of the desktops and Blackberry units.

How to change default OWA/OMA Port
Hi all,
One Server 2003 R2 DC with Exchange 2003/SP2. Clients are accessing OWA and
OMA remotely and it's working fine.
I want to change the port number from 80 to something else for security
reasons and I was wondering what's the preferred method. I've tried just
redirecting the port numbers on the router (eg: port 4000 -> 80) but you
don't get passed the login prompt. Can't seem to find anything useful about
this matter on the net either.
Any help appreciated.

Create Mailbox without login user in
exchange won't create a mailbox without login the user in first to the
domain.
Is there any way to bypass this thing. Let's say the account is just a
regular
user and not an admin. How would i sitting at the DC or exchange server
manage to fool the AD into creating the account without
1. logging off the admin account and login in as the user
or
2. going to another workstation and loggin the user there for the first
time.

A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.3.5
We are a small one domain company and want to move Exchange server to a new
computer with a different name in the same routing group. We install Windows
2003 Setandard Server and Exchange 2003 Standard Server with the identical
service pack and hotfixes. Then we move one mailbox to the new server and
test. In the new server it can send and receive all internal and external
emails, but the users in the old server cannot sent emails to the user in
the new server. The following error we got:
A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce
between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your
administrator. <oldserver.domain.com#5.3.5>
In the old server event log, we got:

Description:
A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.3.5 was generated for ...
Causes: A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route
mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured
on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming
port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping
between local virtual servers.
Solution: Check the configuration of the virtual server?s connectors for
loops and ensure each virtual server is defined by a unique incoming port.

Configure OWA on a single server
Hi all,
I am trying to improve my know-how. Therefore, I installed on an old PC at
home Windows Server 2003 and Exchange 2003. I had no problem to setup the
server and all the mailboxes.
However, I was checking the web about a article which tells me how to
configure OWA on a single server. I found a lot of information, but I am
stocked.
Do I need to install ISA?
Do you have a link which has some more information to this topic?
Kind regards,

New Exchange 2003 Mail Account
Good Afternoon,
I hope everyone is doing well today. We've been using SBS since the 4.5
version I believe. We upgraded to 2000 when it came out and upgraded to
2003 sometime last year I believe. My boss has had his email account
through all of the upgrades. His Outlook is very slow and I want to
create a new mail account and move his mail items into this new account.
Can anyone tell me the best way to do this?
His PC is moving slow also, so I'm going to wipe it clean and do a fresh
install of XP. While I'm doing this, I might as well give him a new mail
account in Exchange. I want to know the best way to take the data from his
old MailBox and put it into a new mail box. I'm hoping this will fix the
problems. I'm thinking because the mailbox dates back to the 4.5 version, I
should just create a whole new box. Please advise.
Sincerely,
Anthony Smith

Protect Exchange - Best way to do this
Hi
I'm been asked to set up an Exchange server for a small company. (Small
business server is not an option). And I'm considering how to make this as
secure as possible, after the OS is hardened.
Traditionally I've used a simple firewall, and port forward port 25 to the
SMTP service on the Exchange. Now the firewall has a dedicated dmz port, and
I'm looking at putting this to good use. What do you guys normally do? To
you use a *nix based smarthost that is exposed to the internet with port 25
forwarded from the firewall to the nix box, and then relay to exchange, or
is it normal to prefer a ISA server in standalone mode with message screener
that relays inbound mail to the exchange server?
Valuable feedback is much appreciated.
