Is it possible to define an Exchange 2K3 Address List using an LDAP query to
an external mail system?

We have a corporate office who uses Lotus Notes and allows anonymous LDAP
queries against their Notes server. I would like to create an Address List
for them within our Exchange 2K3 site and simply define it as a LDAP query
against their Notes server. Is this possible?

I know that Exchange has the Lotus Notes Connector for maintaining a link to
an external Notes server but it is very overkill for us. We simply want to
be able to see their address book.

Thanks,
Fred

Fred:
I'm pretty sure that this is not possible. When you create an address
list, the Recipient Update Service (RUS) stamps each user's
"showInAddressBook" attribute with the name of the address lists to which
they would show up. Without a recipient in the Active Directory, they would
not be included in the address list.

IMHO, your best bet is to create mail-enabled contacts for the folks in
your corporate office. That way they will show up in the address lists.

Jim,
Yep, I am beginning to feel that you are correct about creating a
mail-enabled contact. I don't want to manually have to do this but it may
be my only reasonable option. You would think that this would be something
fairly easy and common to do.

Thanks,
Fred

Yep, it sure seems like it would be something simple to do. I'll bet
someone like SimpleSync can synchronize contacts between Notes and the
Active Directory, too. If you have access (admin rights) to the Lotus
Notes system, you can try to set up the directory synchronizer from the
Lotus Notes Connector in Exchange. If you can get anything other than
anonymous access to their Notes system, you might be in business. Take a

You could attempt to manually manipulate the msExchDynamicDLBaseDN attribute of
a dynamic query based group to specify a remote LDAP server - something like
LDAP://servername/basedn

I would be doubtful that it would work though.

Yeah, that is what I tried. I did not add the basedn though because I did
not know what it would be. Any idea?

Thanks,
Fred

You'd have to connect to the Notes server with an LDAP client (ldp.exe is
included in the Windows 2003 Support Tools) and see what it has available as
baseDN's. The BaseDN simply tells the ldap query where to start at. Here
are a few examples of baseDN's with Active Directory.

DC=domainname,DC=com
CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com
CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com
