We have a NT 4.0 domain with a PDC serving as a fileserver and a BDC running
Exchange 5.5. We will be putting a Windows 2003 server, replacing the
fileserver. Can we still use the Exchange 5.5 BDC if we run Interim Mode on
the Windows 2003 server? Any whitepapers that would talk about this?

You can still run 5.5 that way. You want to look at the Windows 2003
upgrade papers and the Active Directory upgrade papers found at
http://www.microsoft.com/ad

Do you think it would be better installing the 2003 server as the domain
controllor (setting up active directory and all that) and running in interem
mode or just throwing another NT 4.0 box and configuring it as a PDC?

Will we want to keep the Exchange 5.5 as a BDC when we get rid of the old PDC
or will we need to promote the BDC to a PDC and run the 2003 server in interm
mode? Not at all familiar with Active Directory or interim mode so any
detail would be appreciated!

Personally, I'd rather use the 2003 machine if I had done my planning and
was ready to deploy Active Directory.

This would be a great time to read those papers I pointed you to.
That said, let the 2003 server run as the PDC (in Active Directory, it's
called the PDCe (emulator)) and it looks and acts just like a NT4 PDC as far
as your NT 4 servers are concerned.
As for your tools to manage it, those should change. Your planning should
be done prior to going this route though. You have to make decisions that
you may not be able to easily fix later.

Feel free to ping me offline if you have any additional questions

Thanks for all your helpfull advice. At least I know now it is possible and
what to be looking for in the active directory documentation. I will be
checking out the documentation maybe practice installing Windows 2003 a few
times in test enviornment. That way I can see what kind of questions and
choices that will need to be made.
Thanks again,
