I have a Existing exchange 5.5 site in a Windows 2003 Active directory environment I started process to install exchange 2003. Setup ADC connection agreements, ran forest & domain prep for 2003 then found out I could not install 2003 had to do exchange 2000. With help from Microsoft was told I could leave adc connections inplace use /removeorg to remove the exchange 2003 org from AD run forest and domain prep for 2000 and then install exchange 2000 on new windows 2000 server
I followed these proceedures carefully and started the exchange 2000 install. Was not prompted to join an existing 5.5 site like the install notes say should happen.
When I open exchange system manager I see both exchange 2000 and exchange 5.5 under administrative groups but as I was not asked to join the existing site has something gone wrong
I installed exchange by loading the CD and from the install screen selected Install rather than browsing to the setup folde
was this wrong. I must install exchange 2000 as we have other products that do not support 2003 yet
sorry for this being long but I wanted to give heaps of information
thanks Kathie

It is possible the old Organization was not properly removed when you
installed the new organization, which is why you were not prompted to join
an Existing Organization. Or it could be the differences between Exchange
2000 and Exchange 2003. So can you answer the following questions:

1) Did you run Exchange 2000 /forestprep separate from Exchange 2000 setup
? If you did run Exchange 2000 Forestprep it is at that time that you get
asked about joining or creating a new Organization. So it is possible you
didn't notice when you ran Exchange 2000 setup. When forst prep runs it
copies information about the 5.5 site you pointed it out into the AD. When
the Exchange 2000 install happens it sees this information in the AD and
forces you to join the site that you pointed Exchange 2000 /forestprep at.
For Exchange 2003 forestprep does not have this decision it just creates
some structures in the AD. Then when you go to install the Exchange 2003
server it asks the join/create, and proceeds from there.

2) Open the Exchange System Manager on the Exchange 2000 server. At the
bottom there is a node called tools, and under it a Site Replication
Services node. How many SRS are listed there, and which server is indicated
the old Exchange 2003 server or the new Exchange 2000? If the old Exchange
2003 server is listed then your organization probably was not removed
correctly.

Thanks I have checked and neither 2000 or 2003 show in the site replication under tools also there is no first storage group under exchange 2000. When installing the software IIS was not installed on the server so we did not install everything. The items not installed were Microsoft Messaging and collaboration Services. Checked notes and I was asked to join a site at forest prep stage was asked for the relevent server name etc
I installed Exchange from the front screen of the CD not by browsing to the folder i386 etc is this wrong. Can I uninstall and reinstall if necessary
thank
Kathie

If you have not installed Messaging and collaboration, then there should be
nothing but the 5.5 server listed in the Admin group in the Exchange System
Manager. Is this correct??

Also when you look in the Exchange 5.5 Administrator do you only see the
Exchange 5.5 servers, or is the old Exchange 2003 server still listed there?
You probably need to delete the old Exchange 2003 server using 5.5
Administrator if it is still there. And unfortunately my recommendation
would be run setup /removeorg again, and start again with the forestprep to
make sure you get a clean install of the Messaging an Collaboration.

thanks again. In the Exchange 5.5 administrator program I only see 5.5 exchange but in the Admin group of Exchange 2000 I see both exchange 5.5 and exchange 2000. Would it be possible to install IIS on the server and then install the components I missed. I can do the other method you recommended but just thought I would ask
thanks your my lifesaver

I'm not really sure. I can not think of a scenario that would account for
what you are seeing.

If there was no IIS (W3SVC, SMTP, NNTP) then messaging components would not
install. So you should not have an Exchange 2000 object in either ESM or
in the 5.5 Admin.
Since you don't have a Exchange 2000 server in the 5.5 directory, but you do
have 1 in the Exchange 2000 I'm not sure what an install would do. Have
you installed anything but the Administration tools on the server?

To be honest I think your best bet is to run the /remove option again and
restart with another round of /forestprep.
I'd be worried with the Exchange 2000 server object in the AD that rather
than a fresh install Exchange may try and run some sort of re-install, which
could miss registering components you might need.
