We have an Exchange 2003 standard on Windows 2003 SP1. It is Dell PowerEdge
2300, very old box and one of the hard drives is failed on RAID5. We would
like to do new installation on a brand new server and transfer all the mail
boxes. Some one can point me to the right documentation where I can find the
best practice/steps for accomplishing this task?

Thanks in advance,

Jack

1. Install Exchange on the new server.
2. Take a full backup of the old Exchange server's information store.
(So that in case any thing happens we have the backup)
3. For testing move 2-3 mailbox from active directory users and groups
and check if the user is able to check his email and receive the
email or not.
4. if that works fine then move another set of 20-30 users.

Move users slowly as sometimes if the mailbox has corruption that can
cause mailbox loss.

you can also refer : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307917/en-us

this is an old Exchange 2000 article but has some of the same settings
that we need to look

Once all is done and you are sure then uninstall the Exchange from the
server :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833396/en-us

and remove the old server object from the AD by using adsiedit.
