    - OWA URGENT Hi I previously had a front end server called ABC however that computer was having some difficulties and I transferred the role to another server. I can access my OWA interface internally however external users are unable to access the page. It times out and says page cannot be displayed.     - New Exchange 2000 Setup I have a registered domain name(www.xxx.com) with networksolutions.com. I have a T1 internet connection with Verizon with dedicated external ip of 141.xxx.xxx.xxx for the exchange server. I've set up a host(A) record(mail.xxx.com) in my dns server to point to the external ip of the exchange server, which I can pind sucessfully from an outside source. If I call networksolutions and have them create an MX record(mail.xxx.com), will I be able to receive emails sent to my domain? Do I need to have Verizon create a PTR record for mail.xxx.com?     - outbound mail problem here is my situation: 2 exchange 2003 servers, one on local network that handles mail, and public folders, and one in the dmz that should only be handling internet mail inbound and outbound. Inbound internet mail works just fine. Outbound mail is going out through the exchange 2003 server that is in my local network though. This works most of the time, but if anyone sends to anyone who requires a reverse dns record to receive mail will not accept mail from us because the reverse record goes to out to the server in the dmz. What do I need to do to get all outbound mail to go out through the correct server? I thought my smtp virtual server was configed correct, but I guess not.     - proxy address address - advice needed Hello all, I need to setup a sort of disaster recovery thing for a company. Amongst other things, I need to sort email service. The target is to allow a user to still be able to send and receive mail in the event the exchange server hosting his mailbox store is destroyed (so no data recovery is necessary). So what I did was to create a dummy user to have an additional mailbox for the real user that he could use in the event of a disaster: real user -> johndoe@mycompany.com dummy user -> johndoe_DR@mycompany.com Now I would like that internal company users and external users be able to send mail to the DR user using the original smtp address without the _DR suffix.     - unable to complete mail transaction with single internet host Hello all, Sometime last week, my Exchange 5.5 SP4 on WIN2K SP4 mail server stopped being able to mail ONE host on the internet. When diagnosing, I can telnet to port 25, but do not get a response to the usual EHLO/MAIL FROM/RCPT TO commands. The connection eventually times out, and disconnects.     - Not Receiving internet e-mail on our new SBS2003 I have followed the advice of a few online articles and allowed all the wizards to configured this system. My first problem was that they did not configure my plug and play router. I re-configured it with two network cards. Now everything works but I can not receive email. Yes, I have confirmed that our MX record is correct. I don't have POP3, so I am not using that connector. The internet e-mail connector is using the Default SMTP Virtual Server - which I assume opens port 25 - I can not seem to find were to adjust those settings.     - Collaboration Advice Hello all, I'm trying to design an Exchange solution for a small office of 3 users on Small Business Server 2003. For the last couple years one of the users has kept all of the business information in a single PST file in Outlook. The critical part is that there are over 7500 contact items and the journal records activities with each contact. So far so good, but now he wants to share this PST file with the other two users and give them the ability to make changes to it. First of all can Exchange do this? The critical part is a shared contact list and the ability to track activities on each contact. A friend of mine suggested that Microsoft CRM is geared more for this purpose.     - Exdeploy question Can I use Exdeploy (version SP1) to migrate from exchange 5.5 to exhcange 2003? According to MS it requires SP1 but my question is how am I supposed to have SP1 installed if I current'y only have 5.5 in my environment? We have right now a kind of database store in a public folder.     - Exchange disk partitions, Deployment Guide and WINS Reading the deployment guide on exchange 2003 it states that one of the requirementsis WINS. I have done three different tests without WINS and it seems to work fine, does everybody have it installed and if not have you noticed any problems. Also the guide says the disk should be partitioned as follows: System Partition, I am presuming is the OS partition. Partition that stores exchange binaries. (Program Files for Exchange?) Partition containing transaction log files. Partition containing database files. Partition containing other exchange files. (MailBox's) 'In reality what are your partitions and what type of disks with how many users?' Any feedback would be great, I am sure for more than just myself.     - Collecting email from another domain - Newbie I already have an email address set up with a particular ISP and have a domain name registered with them also. I would like to set up an exchange server at home using another ISP to pick up this email I have now set up the new server with ADSL via a wireless router with a static IP address from my new ISP (can see Internet and send email succesfully) The other ISP gave me settings to direct the email from their domain to my new servers IP Firstly does this sound as if it should work and if so what do I have to do in Exchange in regard to set up because it wont receive email.     - Event ID 1047 MSExchangeMU HI I have installed Exchange Server 2003 on a win2kDC SP4. Unfortunately no virtual directories are created within IIS for Exchange the directories do appear in the Exchange system Manager. The only error in the event log is Event ID 1047 MSExchangeMU Which describes the problem that I appear to experincing however I have not demoted or promted to a domain controller with exchange installed as the article describes.(822575) I have removed Exchange and cleaned up the registry as per article (833396) including IIS related tasks. Reinstall SPK4 for Windows 2000 then reinstall IIS and Exchange 2003 same problem. I have tried adsutil.vbs delete ds2mb with the out put that the path does not exist.     - Collecting mail from a VPN server We are trialing a windows mobile 2003 device to gather email on the road. Although we have set up our VPN server connections OK we have had to take down the authentication and encription methods to get it to work as there are insufficient settings on the device for these methods. Obviously this situation is not ideal. Does anyone know where these settings are?     - Re-running /Forestprep /Domainprep Hi all, We deployed active directory ahead of Exchange 2003 (circ. 12 months). However, we knew we would deploy Exchange 2003 and ran /forestprep /domainprep on the AD ahead of time. We now have a single forest, single domain worldwide across 14 locations used for authentication primarily. The issue is that the person that ran /forestprep /domainprep used his own account. We have two options (I think). 1. Rename the account OR 2. Re-run /Forestprep /domainprep. Question: Option 2 - Will rerunning (choosing a new account) /forestprep /domainprep cause a global DC rebuild even if the schema has been extended before?     - Removing last 5.5 server from 2003 Exchange Alright, I've got a Windows 2003 Server machine running Exchange 2003 Enterprise. We've got a Windows 2000 machine, upgrade from NT, running 5.5 There's a third Exchange 2003 server running due to some issues we ran into trying to upgrade from 2003 standard to 2003 Enterprise Exchange. SRS is running on the 3rd one. (That one was set up with support from Microsoft.) I disabled the LAN connector on the 5.5 machine to confirm everything was migrated...and it was. So I re-enabled it and disabled all of the Exchange services as per the documentation. I then started the 5.5 Administrator program on the 2003 server in order to remove the 5.5 machine. It wouldn't connect. It tells me "The Microsoft Exchange Server computer does not respond. Microsoft Exchange Directory ID no: DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM" So, I figure I have to connect to the 3rd machine (the 2003 machine set up by MS support). This time it hangs for about 15 seconds before saying the exact same thing. I can't even Browse. So, how do I get rid of this 5.5 server? Tag: Exchange 5.5 & AD question Tag: 124143

    - Desperate Help Needed Please! Hello There :-) Sorry for the cross posting but I need to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible :-) Setup is :- Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Premium running Exchange. Machine is setup as a Domian Controller (only one on the network) and is named hfs-info-dc1, it is also the DNS server for the company using hfs-info.local We have a POP3 email server hosted by another company and it uses the following:- user@hfs-info.com All internal emails and external emails appear on the face of it to function correctly apart from..... Any of the users@hfs-info.com :/ If I try to send the an email to these users external to the company accessing their email using the POP3 server (mail.hfs-info.com) the mail either goes into the local store on the Exchange server or gets bounced back with an NDR saying that the email address is incorrect and that I should check the address. I have tried the following things In the properties for the remote users removing all the email addresses bar a SMTP one that points to the user@hfs-info.com address. Tried on a client adding a secondary POP3 email account to try and get the mail to them that way. I have also tried adding a second SMTP connector that uses a smart host (pointing to the mail server) and added the hfs-info.com domain to it (also with a lower cost to the default one). Deleting completely one of the users of the DC including the mailbox. I am now at my wits end with this problem after nearly 2 days of trying to get it to function. I am a relatively new Exchange user so any help or direction would be immensely appreciated in a nice clear and concise manner to help solve this :-) Many thanks in advance for any help Russell p.s.     - can send but cant receive- get error in event log.. looping on itself Hi all, When I try to send email to my exchange server which is part of SBS 2003 , from an external email account I never get the email. The message arrives at my external smtp box and gets forwarded to my exchange server. The only additional change I've made was to put a smarthost entry in advanced settings for sending mail withing the defualt virtual server. without it, I wasnt able to send mail but now I can send email... I could never send email. a few more tidbits that might be helpfull I have two domain names that I've setup to receive email for. I configured my initial email domain as company.com. I configured a recipient policy for my other domain name company2.com. If I check the individual mailbox it has both email aliases configured. I'm testing everything with the company2.com domain. My ISP has an MX record that forwards all email to my SMTP gateway on my network. That system has individual accounts on it and any mail recieved for an individual account is forwarded to the exchange server. I've verified that the messages ARE being forwarded to my exchange server but my exchange server is not delivering them to the individuals mailbox. I get the following error message in my event log. ------------------------ A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.3.5 was generated for recipient rfc822;adrown@[192.168.2.249] (Message-ID <200411090532.iA95WemV015823@gatekeeper.com>). Causes: A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping between local virtual servers. Solution: Check the configuration of the virtual serverÆs connectors for loops and ensure each virtual server is defined by a unique incoming port. ----------------------------- The only SMTP virtual server that I see is the Default virtual server that I see is in ESM down within the DOMAIN/servers/protocols/smtp/default virtual smtp server.     - Outlook logon w/ diff username/password When using Outlook, can you log into outlook using a different username/password than the one you used to log on to Windows? We are using terminal services with thin clients in a POS environment, and our users float between workstations all day. The workstations (thin clients) use login username/passwords that are linked to the physical location of the workstation (frontdesk, backoffice, etc.) It's not practical for a user to log in and out each time they move from workstation to workstation (our application handles identifying the user) We'd like to move to Exchange server w/ Outlook for our users email/calendaring/etc. but they'd need to log in to Outlook directly, independent of their windows login.     - Stuck contacts I deleted a number of people (and mailboxes) from my exchange server (confirmed there are no mailboxes any longer, ran the cleanup task myself). However, when I look at my address book, they are still there (in outloook). When I am on the OWA they are NOT there so this must be something in my outlook application but I cannot think of what it could be. I've rebooted to no avail. Can anyone help?     - Ping: Steven Halsey: SMTP Configuration and 5.5 to 2k Hello again, Thank you for all your help. I migrated all of our Public Folders and Mailboxes per your advice and had no data loss or problems. Had to reset some permissions manually and clen up the AD but all in all I am a happy admin. :) One last qestion though. This orginization had some configuration issues before I got here and now is the time to clean them up. Heres what was going on: The company used to be have a differnt name and as such all thier mail came through that domain such: mail.company-A.com is the name of the mai server that handles all the mail for mail.company-B.com, mail.company-C.com etc... Company-A no longer exists and though the domain is still active it is only a forward to Company-B. When I brought up the new E2k server I named it mail2.company-B.com however as you would expect old domain still shows up in SMTP configuration of the new server. The MX record at our ISP has enteries for mail.comapny-B.com so thats fine but I am a little confused about the steps to take to configure the SMTP connector on the new server so that I can shut down the old server and stop relaying the mail through it to the new one. We run a PIX 515 Firewall so I know I can easily change the route of SMTP data there but I am unsure what will happen as far as the names of the servers go. I hope this question made sense.     - Adding temporary Exchange 2003 server Hi Gents, I've been hunting google high and low this morning but she isn't being her usual helpful self! We've got a single Windows 2003 Standard server running as DC with Exchange 2003. I know this isn't an ideal setup but it was installed before we became involved. At the moment this server has some horrible problems and we're off down to rebuild it. Currently we have a replacement machine to run on site whilst their server is being rebuilt. It's a slightly slower machine but it's also running 2003 and Exchange 2003 (not yet installed). The way we're going to work this is to install the loan as a member server then promote it to a DC. From there we can set up replication for DNS and WINS and get essentially a replica of their current server. Data can then be copied over and shared off accordingly with printers etc. Then we can set the GC and take their server down - after Exchange is sorted! So, onto Exchange. I've had a chat with a colleague and he's suggested installing Exchange when the machine is set up as a DC and use the ESM to transfer the data to the 'new' server. In theory, I can see how this works, as when we take the knackered box down all the tasks should be carried out by The Replacement(TM) It's the Exchange part I'm struggling to get my head around here. If any of you could point me in the right direction I'd be most appreciative. For the most part, I'm looking for whether I need to do anything with the AD setup, what I need to take into account when installing Exchange and setting it up on the replacement machine and if there are any glaringly obvious things I'm missing here!     - Routing Mail Inside Exchange Organization I have a question I was hoping someone could help me with. Here is my scenario; I have a single Forest with two domains as separate trees (not parent-child). I have a set of users in the first domain (ABC), and a set of users in the second domain (XYZ). The first domain consists of a single site, and a single Exchange server, which is also the first Exchange server installed (created the Exchange Organization (MAIL1)). In the second domain (XYZ) I have 8 separate sites that all contain a domain controller and an Exchange server. All of the domain controllers in this domain belong to the same domain (XYZ) and the Exchange servers belong to the same Exchange Organization (MAIL1). My first question is how would I assign users in my second domain to have their mailboxes on the Exchange server that is physically located on their site? The second is, how would Exchange route their messages from the receiving Exchange server (the first Exchange server located in (ABC) domain, this is the server that accepts the incoming mail) to the Exchange server on which the users mailbox actually sits? Would I need to setup routing groups inside of Exchange? How would I define the sites in AD and/or Exchange? Would it work best to create each of the 8 sites that currently comprise the second domain into their own domains? Would it make it easier to have the first domain and the second domain (or set or 8 domains) to be parent and child(ren)? Any help or considerations would be immensely appreciated. Our email accounts and domain name are hold by our local ISP. My company wanted me to setup a MS exchange 2003 server and create email for our staffs. Example alan@abc.com, mary@abc.com and etc. We still want to keep the two existing email accounts (sales and acct) on ISP. What we like to do is, if someone sends email to sales@abc.com and it will go to our local ISP. If someone sends email to alan@abc.com and it will go to my exchange server. It is possible to incorporate internal and external email accounts? Can I share the same domain name with ISP? Will it conflict? I would appreciate if someone can help me.     - Exchange USer problem I have an exchange user (on SBS) that can receive e-mail, but cannot send. His mailbox seems to be set up as other users but he cannot send any external mail. No error messages are received in his inbox. Internal mail works fine. More bizarre is the fact that he can receive some mail, but there are a lot of messages (if you look in his mailbox with Message Tracking centre) that don't seem to have been 'delivered' but are nonetheless in his mailbox (store). The user is part of the same 'domain user group' as everybody else but is the only one having problems with mail. Can anybody offer any clue as to how to fix this problem. same old way.

Since you are going to go to Exchange 2003 shortly you do need the
ADC. This is so that your Active Directory accounts can be associated
with a mailbox on the 5.5 server and for any address type information
to be copied into Exchange.
Only if you were not planning on going to Exchange 2003 would you
leave the ADC out.
