Hi,

I would appreciate any assistance to solve my problem.

CURRENT SCENARIO:

1) Our org has 2 LANs (Windows NT Server and W2K Server) with a mix match
of 9x, NT and 2K Pro PCs. Both LANs are on different subnets and different
domains eg. Branch - BraDomain, Head Office - HODomain, however we are
connected via 64K lease line between branch and HO, and another 64K L/line
to ISP for internet traffic.

2) All clients at Branch and HO requiring internet access just have their
default gateway address as IP of the router at HO to ISP.

3) All external emails are hosted by ISP and I am tasked to deploy
Exchange in our organisation as the solution to our email problems and
communication needs.

WHAT I'VE DONE:

1) Created a test environment where I have 3 PCs to work with.

a) I installed W2K Server on Server-A with domain called pt.com.pg
and SP4. Installed Active Directory and configured DNS and tested etc.
Subnet is 192.168.1.0. Server is 192.168.1.200 which is also DNS ip
address.

b) Then on 2nd W2K Server called Server-B created child domain called
brancha.pt.com.pg and installed SP4. Subnet is 192.168.2.0. Server IP is
192.168.2.200

c) a) and b) are to emulate HO and Branch. In Server-A I've used 2
IP addresses (1 as primary IP of server e.g 192.168.1.200, the other IP as
"gateway" i.e. 192.168.70.254

In Server-B I've also used 2 IP addressess (1 as primary IP of server e.g.
192.168.2.200, the other IP is to enable connectivity between both domains
and it is 192.168.1.201 with primary DNS pointing to 192.168.1.200.

2) I can see entire pt.com.pg domain and branch.pt.com.pg domains from
either servers.

3) The 3rd PC I have is build with W2K pro as a client which I can join
into either domain to test from any of them.

I guess I am happy with Active Directory and DNS settings in the test
environment.

WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?

1) I've installed Exchange 2000 Server onto the Server-A machine with the
appropriate A and MX records in DNS and tested emailing which works fine
within HO alone.

2) I wish to test sending messages between users of both domains. Does
this mean I need to install Exchange at branch site? I was under the
impression you could setup users in AD at the branch domain for
authentication purposes, then they log on to mail server here at HO to
collect/send mails. I fear this may not be the case.

Basically I just wanted to have users log in locally to their DC (branch or
HO) then can send/receive mails internally or externally using exchange.

Of course this is all just in my test environment but once I understand the
concepts, would migrate to live later.

Please help. Any advise would be much appreciated!!

If its all the same forest and they have available bandwidth to login to
exchange over the wire, all should be fine (however 64 KB will very very
likely NOT do the job with mailflow and AD replication over that slow of a
link).

That aside, for your lab you will need to create a Recipient Update Service
for each domain to stamp the users with email addresses.
