Dear all,

Iâ??m trying to install a new EXCH 5.5 server on a WIN2K box. When I try to join an existing site (EXCH 5.5 server on NT 4) I get the following message:

Failed to connect to the server '<server name>' with the following error. Try a different server, or correct the error.

The Microsoft Exchange Server computer does not respond.

Microsoft Exchange Directory
DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Olivier

Make sure you can ping the NT4 5.5 server from the Windows 2000 Server, and
vice versa.
Be sure you are using an account with permissions to the Exchange 5.5 Site
and Configuration.
Check out this KB on the NT4 Box as it is a possible cause:

Hi Steven,

I can ping the NT4 5.5 server from the Windows 2000 Server, and
vice versa.

Iâ??m installing Exchange 5.5 on the WIN2k server with an account which has Service Account Admin rights on both Site and Configuration level on the NT4 EXCH 5.5 box.

The versions of the files mentioned in the KB article:

// NT4 server //

C:\winnt\system32\Schannel.dll
Product version: 5.00.1880.14
Created: Friday, May 10, 2002 7:50:10 PM

C:\winnt\system32\Ntlmssps.dll
Product version: 4.00
Created: Thursday, November 18, 1999 11:04:00 AM

C:\winnt\system32\Security.dll
Product version: 4.00
Created: Thursday, November 18, 1999 11:04:00 AM

// WIN2K server //

C:\winnt\system32\Schannel.dll
Product version: 5.00.2195.6899
Created: Thursday, March 11, 2004, 4:37:41 AM

Ntlmssps.dll; not installed

C:\winnt\system32\Security.dll
Product version: 5.00.2154.1
Created: Tuesday, December 07, 1999, 2:00:00 PM

What versions are 56 bit and what versions are 128 bit?

Thanks in advance,

Olivier
