Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to exchange 2003. Basically, I have set up a new server
at a new company I work for (there are only 4 staff at present), we have set
up a single domain controller with Windows server 2003 and exchange 2003
under the name purplezebra.local. We are currently registering an internet
domain name as purplezebra.org.uk (this one is still going through the
registration process).

Recipient policies in exchange 2003 are set as purplezebra.local and
purplezebra.org.uk, with purplezebra.org.uk set as the primary email address,
and all user email addresses in AD being username@purplezebra.org.uk.

The smtp virtual server settings in exchange have been left to default, and
an smtp connector has been created for outbound mail. The General tab shows
'use DNS to route to each address space on this connector' as our own server
in the local bridgeheads window. For the 'Address Space' tab, it shows smtp
as the 'type' with an address of * and a cost of 1. These are the default
settings.

The DNS forwarders tab in Active Directory, has been added with external ip
addresses the same as seen on our netgear adsl broadband router, these are
something like 195.......... and 195......

Our public ip address is 84.............

We have opened the appropiate ports on the netgear firewall router.

Basically, my questions are:-

-Can anyone go through the process for me of setting this up OR

-Is there anything else to setup in exchange, is it right?
-How do we configure MX records at the ISP end, does the MX record point to
our
public ip address, is there anything else?
-Can mail still be delivered internally even though the MX records are not
configured at the ISP end yet?

The thing is, I can't find info anywhere that goes through all this.

Many thanks and kind regards to all,
Jeff

- MX record needs to point to your mail server's A record, and A record maps
to its public ip address
- make sure your exchange server can complete nslookup for external domains
(.. it should with the forwarders added to your dns)
- internal mail delivery for exchange recipients is independent of mx
records in dns - it depends on AD to figure out where internal mailboxes
reside

Here is great article explaining how to host your own SMTP mail server using
Exchange, please post back if you have any more questions after reading.

Many thanks guys for all your help. Always first class.

So basically please let me clarify, it is a question of:--

1) Setup MX records to point to mail.purplezebra.org.uk (Internet domain
name) and A record to point to the public ip address of 84.................
at the ISP
2) Setup recipient policy in exchange with Internet domain name and ensure
user email addresses use that name
3) Configure an external DNS ip address for the smtp virtual server
4) Add external dns addresses in the DNS console forwarders tab
5) Configure the firewall router to forward ports and that is it!

For point 3 above, can we use any external DNS ip address, such as that
provided on the router by our ISP?

Why do some websites advise on creating an smtp connector and do not
demonstrate adding external DNS ip addresses in the smtp virtual server?

Finally, DNS works fine in AD, there are no problems in the event log and
netdiag and dcdiag run fine with no probs, is there any reason why internal
emails cannot be sent or received. In the meantime, the appropriate ports
still need setting up on the router and MX records are still going through
the registration process.

Many thanks again and kind regards to you all,
Jeff

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Its optional in this case. It will work fine without entering Extenal
DNS Servers.
4. Yes.
5. Yes.

As for internal emails not being sent, what NDR are you recieving?

Thanks again John,

1) Basically, when sending mail internally to each other through Outlook, no
NDR messages have appeared in any users inbox. We can send mail externally to
the Internet. Is there a particular process to setup NDR or is it set to
default, should we be receiving NDRs automatically? If we can receive NDRs
then I can check the error codes etc which appear and take it from there.

2) My last question, as we have our email addresses set as
username@purplezebra.org.uk. (which is our internet domain name) and we have
the internal domain name as servername.purplezebra.local. Is there anything
else to setup for internal emailing addressing, or should AD as you mentioned
earlier figure this out itself?

Anyway, so far it basically looks like from the excellent advice you have
given, we need to configure port forwarding on the router and ensure MX
records are ok. It's just the internal mail to sort out.

Thanks for your help
Jeff

Go to a user in ADUC- right click Properties. Select the Email Addresses
Tab. What SMTP addresses are showing?

John

The email addresses are username@purplezebra.org.uk

In the meantime, I have discovered the router is faulty also. Power to it is
intermittent and it keeps losing a connection. So what I am going to do is
acquire a new router. However, your advice and that of others, has been
incredibly helpful and very useful, and I have taken this onboard.

Many thanks

Glad to hear you are making progress. Looks as though the Default Recip
Policy is working so we may have to turn on some Monitoring to see why
Internal Mail is not working. Here is link to get you started
troubleshooting,
