Help with rack mounted installation
Does anyone have experience with installation of a rack-
mounted appliance?
I am looking to improve the installation process so I am
looking for people with experience to get some feedback.
What is the current rack format at your site?
What was difficult about the installation?
What was easy about the installation?
What method do you prefer for appliance configuration?

Junction Points Dilema
The following makes me VERY nervous !
Due to a FOULUP with a tape restore I now have a copy of SYSVOL in active
directory on the administrators desktop and in the SYSVOL scripts folder. It
is preventing further good tape backups.
I need to break these junctions and remove the 'duplicates' without
corrupting the real SYSVOL and killing the server.
LINKD or DELRP or SysInternals JUNCTION.EXE are supposed to do the same
thing however I cannot find sufficient information to reassure me that I can
do what I need and will not damage the server.

Mailboxes won't update automatically after moving to Exchange 2003!!!
After moving all of my users's mailboxes to the new Excange 2003 server, I
noticed that their mailboxes won't update automatically as they used to. You
have to make Outlook client window active then click on certain menu
opetions (such as send/receive or moving from 1 folder to another) in order
for OL to start updating inbox with new emails.
For some clients, I created a new OL profile and they start working
properly, but many others don't!
Is there any special setup/configuration that I need to perform?
Thanks a million!

HTTP access for Public Folders
I continue to get the following error when I attempt to
access the Public Folders in MS Outlook Web Access
(Exchange 2003)
HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable
I have looked in the System Manager and I get the warning
(when I click on Folders -> Public Folders) that the HTTP
service for Public Folders is not available because:
1 Public Stores not Mounted
or
2 Information Store not running.
I confirmed that the information store IS running, and
when I attempt to 'mount' the Public Store, it says it
already is mounted and I see the option to 'dismount'.
I have granted full rights to Domain Users in both the
Folders -> Public Folders and First Stoarage Group ->
Public Folder Store.
I don't know where else to go and 'Turn On' the HTTP
service for the Public Folders.
Everything else is working great for all users.
Thanks for any help or ideas!

Exchange setup question
hi all,
I am planning to deploy out exchange to our LAN, but i
got a few questions. First, some background information.
We have a ADSL router, which is for our internet
connection. Behind the router, there is a sonicwall
firewall. It then connect to a switch, all other
machines and servers are plugged in this switch and
access internet through it.
There are two servers on the network, first server is the
DC, it is also our DNS and DHCP server. The second
server is the exchange server.
Our LAN is using the private class c address, which is
192.168.x.x.
I know public MX record at our ISP should be point to our
gateway at the router, which is a public IP address. i.e
203.198.x.1 . However, i am wondering how should i
configure our local server or DNS server in order to
direct all the incoming Mail traffic from the router to
our exchange server? Should i configure a local MX
record at our DNS server? e.g if our exchange server IP
address is 192.168.0.3. Then do i create a local MX
record at our local DNS server? or there is some way to
direct all the Mail traffic from our "sonicwall firewall"
to the exchange server? e.g direct all the traffic from a
specific port to the exchange server.

ones are readable although they apear as mail. The contacts just have the

Configuring NDR copies to Public Folder
Hi
Using Exchange Server 2003.
I created a 'postmaster' mailbox that receives NDRs and then set it so that
it forwards it to another address which is a mail enabled public folder.
I get this error in the event viewer.
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store
Event Category: Transport Delivering
Event ID: 2028
Date: 08/07/04
Time: 2:36:56 PM
User: N/A
Computer: APOLLO
Description:
The delivery of a message sent by public folder NDR
NOTIFICATIONS227406224D7E7D4E26D0C5A3D1DD7EA40A5CCA has failed.
To: 'notavaliduser@ebop.govt.nz'
Cc:
The non-delivery report has been deleted.
Why does it say 'message sent by public folder' when it has not received it
yet.
I've had diagnostic logging turned on MSExchange Transport and
MSExchangeIS\Public and Private. Nothing specific when a NDR is raised.
Only this event id:2028 that refers to the Public Folder.
I also tested by trying to forward to another PF, but get the same error.
The only time it works is when you have a client side rule on the mailbox to
copy messages to PF. But this requires the Mailbox to run always. The PF is
not moderated either. Created new.

How to allow a common login for mailboxes on 2 servers in 1 Admin Group
Hello,

Large Srv (Exch 2k3 Enterprise)

upgrading exchange 2000 to 2003
Hello,
I'm planning on upgrading our Exchange 2000 server to 2003 and wanted to get some advice on my plan. First, I'll be upgrading AD and the DCs to 2003. My plan for Exchange is to
1) Install a Exchange 2003 server on one of our W2K3 servers in the same admin group of the Exchange 2000 box.
2) Move mailboxes to new Exchange 2003 box.
3) Rebuild original Exchange box to W2K3 and Exchange 2003
4) Move mailboxes back to original server
5) Remove secondary Exchange box.
Sound like a workable plan? Any caveats I should be aware of? Seems deceptively simple which always worries me. Thanks for the help.

Migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003
I am running Exchange 5.5 SP4 on Windows 2000 Server SP4

When trying to use ADC to migrate the data, the

However, the server name is correct and resolves via

Another Relay Question...
My server DOES NOT relay, but I have this problem...
The best way I can explain this is...the Exchange server
seems to mislead spammers into thinking my server is an
open relay, allows them to connect and upload the spam
messages but never deliver to the outside. It still
attempts to deliver the messages, queues up clogging my
system...and its getting worse each day!
The other problem is it fills up my BadMail folder with
thousands and thousands of BDR, BAD files - last weekend
I had over 50,000 files in this BadMail folder. Im
getting UNDELIVERABLE messages (my account is setup to
receive all UNDELIVERABLES from the server) at a rate of
2 or more a minute!
What can be done? There has to be a way to shut down my
servers ability to ACCEPT message from spammers even
though it doesn't forward them.
HELP! :)

AD Domain Rename with ADC running. oops.
Seems someone here decided to rename the 2003 AD domain when we had an
Exchange 2003 server running ADC to an Exchange 5.5 server. (All
users are still on 5.5 except a few test ones)
The domain name change worked until the exchange part (XDR-Fixup)
where it said you cannot have a SRS (Site Replication Service)
running. :/
So now everything is pretty messed up. They re-ran rendom and put
everything back to the original domain. (back to .local)
The ADC was just a test connection and everyone will be staying on
Exchange 5.5 for awhile longer. Is it possible to remove the ADC
(I've seen KB822450 article) and then run rendom to fix the domain
name. Then later re-run the ADC with the same exchange 5.5 email
server. Then eventually transfer over the users to the Exchange 2003
email server.
I've briefly scanned 822450 and it appears it permanently removes 5.5
from the domain. Not sure if you can reattach later.
Thanks for any help and options.

Exchange 2003 Server migration
Hello,
Could someone please give me some directions here:
I have installed two new Servers in a Windows 2000 Domain with AD, they are
on the same physical network with Windows NT 4.0 domain. I am installing
Exchange Server 2003 in the Windows 2000 Domain, it will be a fresh install,
not an upgrade (new organization, although I would like to keep the same
organization name as my Exchange 5.5 Server in my Windows NT domain).
As just mention, I have a Exchange 5.5 up and running in my Windows NT
domain with about 75-100 mailboxes. What I would like to do is migrate all
the users mailboxes and their message folders over to the new Exchange 2003
Server from the existing Exchange 5.5 Server.
What is the best method of doing this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Exchange 2003 SP1 error
I just recently installed an MS 2003 Server and MS Exchange server 2003. I
successfully migrated from Exchange 5.5 to the new Exchange 2003 server. I
just tried to run the Exchange 2003 SP1 update and received the following

Let me set this up first. I double-click on the Update.Exe file located in

the install process and specifically during the "Microsoft Exchange
Messaging and Collaboration Services" part it stops on the Beginning Update
of SMTP Service sub-component. It then displays the following message:
"Setup failed while installing sub-component SMTP service with error

description). You may cancel the installation or retry the failed step
again." [Retry] [Cancel]
The update then continues to the next step in the update when I click the

M drive plus
Hello,
We are starting to plan our move to Exchange 2003 and do
not expect any issues since we are upgrading all
equipment. The one question is we have had issues with
our Ex2k box in that when it was built the 'domain' under

What was done wrong and how can I/we avoid this.

Added 2nd server to Site, some smtp problems.
Ok i installed a second Exchange 2003 SP1 server. The install went
without a hitch.
I then moved my mailbox from the old server to the new, again no
problems.
Logged into my mailbox no problem and verified it was reading it on
the new server.
Now problems --
I can send internal and external email just fine. I can not receive
mail at all, no rejection notices seem to be sent to the senders
either ? I.e. if i have my coworker send me an email it sends with no
rejection but i never get it, if i send mail in externally i never get
it and again no rejection email.
Why is the old server (lets call it exch1) not delivering my mail to
(exch2) it obviously knows where I am ?
Second problem is public folders, i went into public folders and added
exch2 as a replica of every folder. Even after an hour however in my
outlook i do not see any public folders ?

Optimizing Memory Usage in Exchange Server 2003
Please can someone advise me what to do in the following situation:
I recently upraded my Exchange 2003 server to 4GB RAM and saw the event 9665
in the event viewer. It refers to KB815372 which details how to optimize
memory usage in Exchange.
After reading the article; I am considering putting the /3GB switch in the
boot.ini; however there are some mitigating factors in my environment.
My Exchange server is actually the DC and it has SQL2000 installed on it. (I
know, I know - terrible. Budget constraints).
I know that SQL and Exchange are both applications that are memory
hogs/lovers; so can I use the methods described in KB815372? Tag: Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition Upgrade Tag: 118298

What is 'free/busy'?
What is public free/busy data? How can I create it? or locate it?
Recently I transferred Exchange 2000 on a Win 2000 Server to Exchange 2003
on a new 2003 Server. When all was OK, I switched off the server, worked
well then removed it following instruction found in MS site.
After a week, Outlook 2000 is often giving on some PCs:
"Unable to update public free/busy data. The contents of this public folder
are currently unavailable. Either the Microsoft Exchange Server computer
servicing this public folder is down or the public folder has not been
replicated to this site."
I check MS Q284200 but settings are as expected. I ran Outlook 2000 with:
/cleanfreebusy and got this message
"unable to clean your free/busy information on the server"
All looks quite well.
Any solution?

Exchange 2000 Migration question.Trying to add a new 2k server to
Exchange 2000 Migration question. Trying to add a new 2k server to Site 2 after turning off 5.5 server
My original 5.5 Config was 1 x 5.5 Org (O1) with 2 Sites (S1) and (S2) both with Exchange 5.5 servers.
I added Exchange 2K servers to each site and Migrated the users/Public folders fine.
In Site 2 I followed the instructions to remove a 5.5 server moving Roles etc. I have turned the server off for a few weeks all works fine.
The two steps I have not done is to delete the server Object from site 2, and remove the SRS from the Exchange 2K in S2, which I think I am not meant to do until I remove all 5.5 server from the Org and want to got native.
When I try to add another 2K server to Site 2 it asks for a 5.5 server to get information about joining the Site (which I have turned off). If I delete the object will that solve the issue? The reason I have not delete the old 5.5 object was I wanted to make sure I had covered everything before I do this.
I have left the ADC running in Site2 maybe i need to stop it ?
Hope someone can help Tag: Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition Upgrade Tag: 118289
The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to.
Hi,
I've just setup Exchange Server at our office in Mumbai, India, and am
facing a very unusual situation.
Our domain is hosted on a remote server with 10 POP E-mail id's defined as
follows:
jtalpade, tshaikh, pshanbhag, mshriyan, mmanjrekar, rumap, adivate,
rtalpade, schourasia and rramesh
On my exchange server, i have defined the following users:
tshaikh, mshriyan, mmanjrekar, rumap, adivate, rtalpade, schourasia and
rramesh
I have kept "jtalpade" & "pshanbhag" out of the exchange server user list as
they reside in a different city, viz Delhi & Bangalore respectively.
When any of the exchange users try sending mail to these external users,
they get a bounce mail from the administrator with the following message:

Public Folders Migration from Exchange 2000->2003
We are going to be moving users from our current Exchange
2000 server to a new Exchange 2003 server. We will be
moving a number of public folders as well. Both servers
are in the same organization. What would be the better
method of migration for the public folders...using the
pfmigrate utility to do all at once, or setting up an
actual replication partnership between both servers? Both
seem to accomplish the same thing.
Thanks,
