I am in the middle of the transition from 2003 to 2007

Using article
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997617.aspx

I have completed step 1
I moved one mailbox in Step 2 (as a test)

In step 3 - Optional (this is for removing Exch 2003 from forest) which I
plan on doing... MY QUESTION IS THIS:

If I have never created any public folders, do I still need to create a
replica in Exchange System Manager (2003) to replicate to the Exchange 2007
Public Mailbox?

I note I do not have to create a replica for OAB / free/busy per the KB
referenced above - I am showing the following...do I need to worry about any
of these?

Thanks

RE: Exchange 2007 - Public Folders by v-chacez

Hi,

Thank you for posting here.

Based on my research, there are two methods to create offline address book.

1. Public folder distribution method:

Create a public folder on Exchange 2007 server and replicate with Exchange
2003 public folder. By default Exchange 2007 do not contain any public
store on it.

2. Create an Offline Address Book Virtual Directory

The OAB virtual directory is the distribution point used by the Web-based
distribution method of the OAB. By default, when Microsoft Exchange Server
2007 is installed, a new virtual directory named OAB is created in the
default internal Web site in Internet Information Services (IIS). If you
have client-side users that connect to Microsoft Outlook from outside your
organization's firewall, you can add an external Web site. Alternatively,
when you run the New-OABVirtualDirectory cmdlet in the Exchange Management
Shell, a new virtual directory named OAB is created in the default IIS Web
site on the local Exchange 2007 server.
To create an OAB virtual directory with all of the default settings, you
can run the New-OABVirtualDirectory cmdlet without any parameters in
Exchange Shell mode.

More info please refer Exchange 2007 help file.

Have a nice day!

Thank you for replying,
I guess I am still left withthe question...

I can't recall ever configuring Exch 2003 for OAB, I may have attempted to
at some point, but never pursued it further.

I listed the Public folders I have in Exch 2003, but wanted to know if I
needed to move any of these? I noted that I can create a replica to move
anything I need to, it appears that Exch 2007 did in fact create a "public
folder database", it is listed as a Second Storage Group under (Exch
Management Console --> Server Config --> Mailbox --> Server Name (Bottom
Window Pane) )

I just don't know if there is anything in the public folders I need, and
would rather not clutter my new database with junk?

Please Advise.

Hi ,

Thank you for your update.

Per my knowledge, if in your environment there are per outlook 2003,
outlook 2000 clients , you have to keep a public folder to contain the
system folder for older client access. In this scenario, you have to
migrate the system folder to the Exchange 2007 Server.

Have a nice day!

I guess that is my point

THere is no Migrate the 'system folder'
You can only replicate each one individually from one server to the
other...but I just don't know if I have to?

Thanks

Hi,

If you create create replicas of the offline address book (and all
associated OAB folders) and the schedule+ free/busy folders you should be
fine.

Re: Exchange 2007 - Public Folders by smurfman

See this is where things are confusing....

According to this link (doc)
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997617.aspx

It states for Step 3 (Optional)
----------------------------------
"You do not need to create replicas for the offline address book (OAB) or
free/busy system folders. When you install the first Exchange 2007 server,
Exchange creates the replicas. "

I have not configured any Office Address Books, in fact I was messing around
some time ago, but ended up deleting them...yet there are still entries for
the public folders.

I guess my question is, if I do not create any replica's ... from this point
for public folders, what will happen?

THanks
J

Re: Exchange 2007 - Public Folders by Dave

When you install Exchange 2007 we will NOT create replicates. The Jet /
Store code that is responsible for creating the store will read from the
siteFolderServer object which will be your 2003 server if this is a mixed
org to get the system information necessary for stamping this pf. You will
need to push replicas of the OAB over there if you expect to have your
free/busy or OAB to be published. All Outlook 2007 clients will use the
availability service to communicate with the mailbox / calendar for your
free/busy data.

For your OAB the Default Offline Address List will be pointing to the
Exchange 2003 server and when you try to generate it will fail. All calls go
via RPC or XSO to the 2003 server for the rebuild. If you move the OAB to
the 2007 server and run update-offlineaddressbook we will force an RPC call
to the store to create the root system folder and then the oab generation
process will create the oab version 2, 3 and 4 folders (if your default
offline address book) specifies them. What you are seeing in most likely the
hierarchy. If you are going to have legacy clients you will need to push
replicas over before you remove your legacy servers.
