I have an exchange 2k3 organization with 3 servers. I have recently set up a
4th server to be a front end for OWA. I have followed the microsoft provided
instructions on how to configure the server and all looks well. The problem
is when I sign in to OWA on the front end, i get authenticated, but then I
get the error "Http 500 Internal server error". If I turn off friendly Http
error messages, I get the error "Unspecified Error". I have searched
extensively for an answer but I can not find any.

Michael:
I'm not sure if this is your problem or not, but I had a very similar
problem recently and it was because the Guests group was being denied
permissions to logon locally (or across the network, I'm don't remember
exactly). I'm not sure. Can you enable forms-based authentication on the
front-end server and then see the Exchange logon page? Can you see the
default web site page on the front-end server?

Here are a couple of KB articles that I went through while
troubleshooting it, though:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=871013
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829167

Other things to try, take a look at the IIS logs on both the front-end
server as well as the back-end server to see if there is anything revealing
in the logs. Are there any access denied messages in the Security event
log?

lets see.. there are no access denied messages in any of the event logs on
any server.. I actually already did enable forms based auth on the front end
and the page shows up fine, and I can successfully authenticate, but when I
hit "logon" that when I get the error message. Also, OMA seems to be working
properly through the front end. Just OWA is acting up. I checked the logs for
IIS on all servers and they don't seem to offer much help. I had looked at
those knowlege base articles previously and neither of them was my issue. I
loaded ethereal on the front end, and captured some packets while i tried to
get into OWA, bu they also don't seem to offer much info. All the LDAP querys
etc seem to look OK as far as I can tell. One question I did have was what is
the proper combination of Forms based auth? I can have it loaded on the front
end, but not on the back end, correct?
