I have two servers at different sites connected by a VPN
tunnel.
Mail01.domain.com (the first server in the domain,
windows2000 sp3 exchange 2000 sp2)

Mail02.domain.com (joined to the domain, Windows 2k3,
Exchange 2k3)

I migrated email users over using the exchange manager.
If mail01 is offline, I cant access email services on
mail02.domain.com

MX records are currently pointing at Mail01.domain.com,
however, can easily be changed.

How can I take mail01 out of the loop, drop the tunnel,
and drop the server?

There are a couple of steps to go through in order to decomission
mail01. See:

How can I get rid of the mail01.domain.com hop and make
mail go to mail01.domain.com?????

MX records mail02.domain.com 0
mail01.domain.com 5

If I take mail01 offline, mail02 does not even allow mail
access (web, imap, pop3, smtp..etc)
