    - Migrating from IMail to MS Exchange 2003 Hi All: Currently in our company we use IMail server to provide email service to our client. Now we are thinking to replace IMail with MS Exchange server2003 and also wanted to tell you guys that myself only gave the suggestion to replace IMail.     - DNS Problems cannot recieve from external email sources OK I have an SBS 2000 system with isa server and exchange 2000 it has 2 network cards. one to the local LAN and one to a broadband link. The broadband link is attached to a NAT router. Network card 1 - LAN 10.0.0.4 subnet 255.x.x.x no gateway with a preffered dns 10.0.0.4 network card 2 - WWW 192.168.0.6 with a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 and dns of 161.58.88.37 (ukdnsservers.co.uk) I can use the exchange internally to send and recieve as you would expect. Externally i can send mail out via a smart host. I have a virtual server pointing to the internet network card 192.168.0.6 and i can connect to this virtual server via telnet from a remote machine and send a message into the exchange. This is where my first problem lies. my message is going into the "messages awaiting directory lookup" i can enumerate the test message but it never resolves to a host. Am i right in assuming my DNS records on my server aren't working if so how do i fix it? I assume i need to set up a host A record and an MX record but where do i point the address to? netdiag tells me re: DNS Test pass - all the dns entries for Dc are registered on dns server 10.0.0.4 warning the dns entries for this DC are not registered correctly on dns warning the dns entries for this DC are not registered correctly on dns Problem 2 lies with my domain. I have 4 domains but at present i only want one to work so that i can convert the others at a later date. I have logged into my domain provider and set up an mx record pointing to my static ip 82.38.x.x When i use checkdns.net and point it to my domain it tells me the mx record is actually pointing to 82.38.x.x.domain.net. Do i set this to my FQDN sbserver.domain.local? I have tried both and both dont work. Other settings on the domain reference a separate web server for www. and http://domain.net, email forwarding is configured as well but doesnt work as it uses the MX record first i assume.     - working with Blackberry Enterprise Server We have exchange 5.5 on a 2000 server. Its sole purpose is so that we can route mail thru it to our Blackberry Enterprise Server 3.6 for the corporations Blackberry users. We use the Internet Mail Service Connector. The blackberry and exchange servers are on the same host and the domain we used is a sub-domain of the sorporations regular mail domain. the issue we are having is the mail forwarded from the regular mail server (netscpae on a Solaris box) comes into the exchange server and goes to the Blackberry Server and to the Blackberryhand helds just fine. However when mails sent back FROM the blackberry it isn't getting back to the users. Blackberry Server records them as being sent. but not sure why they are not going out to he corporation mail server. Is there a set up in the IMS routing or somewhere else in the Exchange Server than i need to set to make this happen. Just emailing from the exchange server to the corporate mail server works fine?     - 3 different domains - Exchange 5.5 upgrade Hi, In my company, we got 3 different domains, one domain at each site. 1st site = DOMAIN1 - W2k DC and Exchange 5.5 running on NT4 server 2nd site = DOMAIN2 - Exchange 5.5 running on NT4 Server (PDC) 3rd site = DOMAIN3 - Exchange 5.5 running on NT4 Server (PDC) Each site is independent of each other. I'm about to upgrade Exchange 5.5 from DOMAIN1. What I want to know is would it have any affects on my DOMAIN2 and DOMAIN3? Exchange 5.5 in each domain has nothing to do with each other however, when I looked in the Active Directory Domain and Trusts under a DC in DOMAIN1, it says that DOMAIN2 and DOMAIN3 is a child domain of DOMAIN1 and they trusted each other. Would this have any impact on my Exchange upgrade in DOMAIN1. As far as I'm concerned, email, data, user accounts, internet access etc... on DOMAIN2 and DOMAIN3 is independent of other domains. Also, in my DOMAIN1, If I do an upgrade of the NT4 Server to W2K server, do I have to setup Active Directory on this upgraded server? Would this have any impact on my existing Back Office Server 4.5 running on NT4 Server before?     - Security with OWA Exch 2003 Ok.. Maybe I missed something in the install. Got Win2003 running. Good. Got Exch2003 RC1 running. Good. Testing and everyone is happy. Launched \\exchangeserver\exchange and I get the Login page no problem via HTTP for OWA. Good. 1) Why is only my Domain Admin account working when I try to login with various "User" accounts. Did I forget to change permissions somewhere?? 2) Do I really need a certificate to get HTTPS going? Work around was I have the firewall point specific "OWA" based DNS name to the Exchange Server w/redirect to the Exchange Virtual Directory. Any help is appreciated. MAN I love the new interface.     - Please help! Unable to use Exchange server Hi all! I'm finishing an Exchange 2000 installation and when I create new users in the Admin console, the E-mail tabs are not appearing. Also, when I go to the Exchange manager I don't see my server, 'WVASERVER' listed as a server. On our other server (the one being replaced) WVASERVER is listed and the e-mail tabs appeared.     - No Static IP available, how to receive email We have an SBS2000 server using Comcast for our ISP, they do not have static IP's available in our area for small businesses. We don't have a web site, but we did register a domain name which we would like to setup our users on for email. tom@ourdomain.com, I am told that Exchange needs to have a static IP in which to set up the MX Record.     - FSMO Role transfer I ran the AD diagnostic program, and found that the schema, and that the schema and domain owner point to DNS1, a server that crashed. So I transfered the roles (I thought) to another server. In domains and trusts under roles, "error" shows up in the current holder field, and I cannot transfer the role. I tried to transfer the role with ADSIEdit, but when I edit the configuration I get the message "A refferral was returned from the server". This was on the 2003 DNS server. On the exchange 2000/Windows 2000 Box I get the message "The role owner attribute could not be read" when I use the right click properties and select FSMORole owner.     - ADCTools reporting phantom mailbox After running ADCTools everything looks good - I have manually fixed all mailboxes so they each only have one AD account. We are running AD on all Windows2003 servers in mixed mode. We are connecting a 10 site Exchange 5.5 environment. When I verify the mailbox resource wizard it reports one error (o and ou have been changed) Error: Security identifier (SID) for the associated Windows NT account (Assoc-NT-Account) for the mailbox 'cn=PatrickVanaart,cn=Recipients,ou=Site,o=ORG' could not be resolved. I have looked all over for this mailbox - tried connecting to the exchange server I used for the ADCTools, and connecting with the server specified in the "ou" part of the error - checked for hidden recipients, etc.. I cannot find this account anywhere. I spoke with someone who has been with the company a long time and they said this person left a long time ago and is no longer an employee... do you know how I can view where the ADCTools are reading this from and eliminate it? Currently when I got to mail.xxx.com/exchange I get a username and password box appear, which works A OK, however I would like the default OWA Page to come up instead. We are going to try and implement a server based patch management system that will automatically update our clients (W95,NT,2K, XP) with the latest patches that we approve of. This would work like the Microsoft SUS server concept. We have researched several packages like PatchLink and HfNetCheckPro4 the Commercial product.     - Need a little help with 5.5 after a recovery Hi everyone, I spent most of Saturday getting Exchange back on its feet after a bad crash. I've got everything restored and it seems to be working except.....none of the Recipients are visible, the Mailbox Resources came back up fine but not the Recipients. What did I miss?     - ADC Connection Agreement Wizard error Hello everyone, I'm working on my Exchange 2003 migration from my existing Exchange 5.5 site. Everything runs fine until I get to the ADC wizard. I went through the first three steps with no problems, identified and corrected Resource mailboxes etc. I run into a problem when I run the Connection Agreement Wizard. Error: The organization Inc. is already installed into this forest but the configured 5.5 server is a member of organization o=Teknosurf Teknologies, Inc.. Please choose a 5.5 server in the correct Org. My Exchange 5.5 Org name is "Teknosurf Teknologies, Inc." - I didn't name it, I just inheritied it.     - Migration of Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Hi there I have installed Exchange 2000 with SP3 onto a new server into our existing Exchange 5.5 site. The Exchage 5.5 Server has SP4 installed. The neccesary ADC agreements have been setup and there is replication between Exchange 5.5 and Active Directory. There is also mail flow between the two servers. Problem 1: The Exchange 2000 Server does not pickup the 5.5 server in Exchange System Manager. Problem 2: The move mailbox wizard in Exchange Tasks under Active Directory Users and Computers does not have the option to move mailbox.     - Recover Exchange5.5 onto new server Hi, Had a bit of a disaster applying SP4 to a 2000 server, which will now not boot. Whilst that is out of action, I need to recover users mail and get it up and running again. I have installed a parallel version of w2k server on the original box, so I can see the drives, including the Exchange databases. The original server though, is dead - I can just see it's drives. I want to be able to copy those databases onto a new server (Server 2003, previous was 2000). The new server will run 5.5 as before. Is there any way I can copy these database files over to the new server? The 2 servers will be called different names - and are even in different Domains. I have no record of the site ID's used at install time either! I only need to recover the emails in the users mailboxes, nothing else is needed. Any help greatly appreciated!     - Help plz!!! unable to receive from outside Hi, I am migrating from exchange 5.5 to 2000. Mailbox and public folders all moved to new exchange server. Firewall configured to reroute email to my new server. This step done too: To Reroute Outgoing Internet E-mail Through the Exchange 2000 Server 1.. Navigate to the following location: Organization\Site\Configuration container\Connections 3.. Then recalculate routing from the Exchange 5.5 Administrator program, Organization\Site\Configuration container, Site Addressing properties, Routing Tab, and then click Recalculate Routing. But when I delete the Internet Mail service from exchange 5.5, I am no longer able to receive mail from outside but still able to send outside.     - exchange 2003 owa win200 works xp doesn't Hello all, We are running Exchange 2003 and the OWA it is running on 2003 server. My problem is windows 200 clients can view the OWA no problem but XP users it takes 5 minutes jsut for things to load and sometimes doens't finish. The 2000 boxes it loads fast and works fine.     - BlackOut took out Exchange Server 5.5 The replacement UPS was here on the loading dock and the new server was being setup when the lights went out. Today with power restored the Exchange 5.5 services won't start on the NT 4.0 BDC. Looking at the event viewer I see a few messages. One in Applications event ID 1000 the Log says "Your profile was not successfully loaded, but you have been logged on with the default system profile. Please correct the problem and log off. (5)" and in the Applications Log Event ID 7013 a message saying "Logon attempt with current password failed with the following error: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password." How do I repair the Administrator Profile if that is the problem. I am getting ready to do a new install of a BDC and Exchange 5.5 and try to recover that way but was wondering if there is a better way. I can't find the System Recovery Disk or I would try that first. Is the problem in the SAM, or in the Exchange and the account it is trying to use to loggin to NT 4.0? Any help would be appreciated. We currenty have 130 e-mail accounts and our website hosted by our phone company. We have 4 U.S. branches connected via 128kb Frame Relay and a branch in Mexico City and a branch in Toronto connected with 56kb Frame Relay. All branches have less than 10 e-mail accounts. The rest of the e-mail accounts reside in our main office were the server will be installed between our Cisco SuperStack3 firewall and router.     - Removing server from blacklist I am trying to get my server removed from a black list but am running into trouble with have the confirmation email sent to me. The email has to go to abuse@[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] the only problem is it won't come through. Does anyone know how to setup exchange to to recieve mail for the IP address as well as the name.     - Moving Exchange 5.5 In KB155216 it states "The underlying processor platform is the same on the new server." I want to move my Exchange 5.5 server to a new machine. Does the above statement mean that you cant go from a x386 based machine to say a Alpha based. My server is currently a old Pentium 166.     - Unable to install Exchange Server 2003 on Windows 2003 server enterprise hi there i downloaded the trial version of microosft exchange server 2003 and i'm tryin' to install it on a windows 2k3 server enterprise edition machine. but i'm unable to install it for some reasons. 1) after i launched the setup.exe which is in the folder exchange2k3\E3EEVAENG\setup\i386 after i press next to proceed to the installation options where u can select the Install Path and the component which should be installed, the Install Path is disabled and completely blank without any path written in, then the Choose path button is disabled also and the next button is also disabled so i can't edit the path manually and can't go to the next step. 2)the second problem is that i can't select the Action (Typical,Minimum or Custom) when i select Typical or Minimum i get an error message like this: "Setup encountered an error while checking prerequsites for the component "Microsoft Exchange": 0XC0070842 (2114) The server service is not started" when i select Custom as install action i get the following error: "Microsoft Exchange has an unknown installation problem." so i can do anything to install the packages cause i can't select anything and the Drive section in the component list are all empty. how can i fix this problem and install Microsoft Exchange server 2003 on Windows 2003? which is the Service that should be started to correct the problem? Read my explanation below. Apparently for some reason the upgrade did not updated the schema as far as the Information Store goes. I'll dare to add that object to the schema but I need someone that has a healthy Exchange 2003 running that can look up and tell me what are the parameters for this object. I am in the process of getting ready to migrate off of Exchange 5.5
SP4 to a newer version on a new server

My environment consists of multiple NT.4.0 servers and Win2K servers
so I am not running active directory yet.

I am not sure if I should go straight to 2003 or stop at 2000. Is one
migration path easier and less vulnerable than the other??

Can someone point me to a best practice document or offer any ideas
