Outgoing mail problem
Hi,
I am testing a new install of Exchange2003. I have 2 server, one is win2003
DC, and the second is a Win2003 member server with Exchange 2003 standard
edition. I have no problems receiving email from all the domains that I
tested (such as AOL, hotmail, and yahoo, etc). However, when I tried to send
email to yahoo.com, aol.com or hotmail.com, the mail has been stuck in the
queue and keeps retrying. The Queue information shows this message "The
connection was dropped by the remote host". If all the emails that I sent
out have problems, then my setup probably is the cause, but some other
domains that I tried to send to receive my email in less than a minute. Are
those domain blocking my ip or domain? Any idea why my mail couldn't get
thru to some domains? What do I need to do to solve the problem? Thank you.

Migration Exchange 5.5 to 2003
HI
We have a network with two 2003 servers install with AD, we also have a
exchange 5.5 install in the domain, We install a new exchange 2003 in the
existing exchange 5.5 organization to migrate all mailboxes from the 5.5 to
the 2003 exchange. That part went perfectly. All mailboxes have been migrated
to the exchange 2003.
The problem we are experiencing is that when we create a new user in AD, the
mailbox is created ok and is created in the new Exchange 2003, but that user
cannot receive any emails from the outside world??? all the mailboxes that
have been migrated from the 5.5 to the new exchange 2003 server are able to
receive emails. users new or old are able to send emails in the local lan.
We are wondering do we have to remove the exchange 5.5 to make those user
with new mailboxes able to receive emails and do we have to create a smtp
connector in the exchange 2003 to be able to receive email for these new
users.
I have procedure to remove the last Exchange 5.5 from a organization is
there any docs or info to hepl us out.
Thank you

public MDB error?
I installed a new (second exchange 2003 server in our domain) 2003

warning message every hour.
"There was a problem retrieving the list of public MDBs associated

/CN=InformationStore/CN=First Storage Group/CN=Public Folder Store
(first exchange server)" was not found in the directory. The item may
have been deleted.
This problem may resolve itself after directory replication and
regular directory maintenence completes."
It was installed over a week ago. Anyone know what this error is
referring to? DNS seems to be working and I can manage the new
exchange server from our original exchange server. Tag: Exchange 5.5 Authrest tool Tag: 124252
Moving Exchange 2003 backup between primary and DR site
As part of our Disaster recovery strategy, I need to come up with a solution
to transfer an active/passive 2 node Exchange 2003 cluster backup from
primary site to a DR site. primary and dr site will be on the same W2k3
domain. We will use NetApp NAS to do the transfer. I will setup a specific
directory structure that I will contain Exchange 2003 backup files and use my
backup utility to backup files to that directory structure and then have them
copied over to DR site via NetApp NAS snapmirror copy tool. My questions are
the following:
1) Aside from what Exchange data gets backed up using Brightsto product, any
other directories/files do i need to backup and transfer so I could restore
on the DR site in the event of a disaster? Cluster config files ?
2) Any other considerations from a DR perspective do I need to consider
using this copy approach?
Please advise.

Similar to an earlier query below, does anyone know where in AD i can find

Installing Exchange 2003 MAPI
My software uses Microsoft MAPI to open mailboxes and manipulate email on an
Exchange server. It has been recommended that instead of using Outlook for
the MAPI we should install Exchange System Manager instead, since it has a
server version of MAPI rather than Outlook's client version.
Some folks express security concerns regarding putting Exchange System
Manager on our application server. Does anyone know of a way to install just
the MAPI components, not all of Exchange System Manager?
Even a listing of all the files that are actually needed on our application
server would suffice.

I have a couple of questions regarding IMF and Outlook 2003.

Does installing the Exchange 2003 front-end enable the new Junk message

Exchange Move
Hello,
We have scheduled a move of our exhcange server database from an NT4 machine
to a new Windows 2000 server following the procedure in article Q155216
We have been taking inventory of our hotfixes and at least one of them (hot
fix 81879) you cannot download. You have to contact microsoft and open up a

the previous server? I would think that some of them would not be required
if they were installed before a service pack came out that contained that fix.

Can't get ADC tools to verify successfully
Hi,
I have an Exchange 5.5 server on a NT domain and am installing our Exchange
2003 in our new AD domain.
I've stepped through the exdeploy.hta tool to the point of installing the
ADC. When I run the ADC, which I have replicating the user/distribution
lists and the public folders, it never says it is completely done and
verified. I've also noticed that the public folders don't come over. We
have the public folders as hidden in the address book, when I unhide them,
they get replicated. I have over 900 hidden objects like that, do I have to
do that on every one?
I also have one distribution list that won't replicate, it has 91 members,
it has the same properties as all the other distribution lists.
There are no errors in the event log, when I turn on the replication
logging, it just says 0 files replicated.
I'd like to delete the public folder connector and bring them over manually,
but am afraid to delete the connector. Has anyone done this successfully,
what does it actually do?
Thanks for the help.

Multiple Exchange 2003 (Standard) servers
Hi,
I've tried to find the answer to these questions in many places. Here
is our situation:
We currently have exchange 5.5 (2 sites/1 server @ each site) running
on Windows 2000 server. We have active directory set up. Both sites
use one domain.
We just merged with another agency and want to add a third site (and
server) and we want to continue to use only one domain. We also want
to upgrade to exchange 2003.
Here are my questions:
1. Can we use Exchange Server 2003 Standard having multiple sites and
servers?
2. I am aware of the 16 GB data store limit, will each site have it's
own data store?
3. Will each site be able to access their mailbox from one outlook
web access server?
Thanks for all the help in advance.

proxy address address - advice needed
Hello all,
I need to setup a sort of disaster recovery thing for a company.
Amongst other things, I need to sort email service. The target is to
allow a user to still be able to send and receive mail in the event
the exchange server hosting his mailbox store is destroyed (so no data
recovery is necessary).
So what I did was to create a dummy user to have an additional mailbox
for the real user that he could use in the event of a disaster:
real user -> johndoe@mycompany.com
dummy user -> johndoe_DR@mycompany.com
Now I would like that internal company users and external users be
able to send mail to the DR user using the original smtp address
without the _DR suffix.
I believe I should use a secondary (proxy) smtp address...is this
right ?

Exchange 5.5 Migration to 2K
Hi all,
I am deciding the best way to upgrade WindowsNT 4.0/Exchange 5.5 to W2K/Exch
2K. Here it is the actual configuration:
Server 1 - PDC of domain DOMAIN1 (NT4.0 / Exch 5.5)
Server 2 - DC of domain DOMAIN2 (W2K)
Server 3 - Member server of domian DOMAIN2 (W2K)
Number of mailboxes: 20
What would be the best approach for migration? Should I install Exch 5.5 on
Server 3, move mailboxes, move users to W2K domain, change mailboxes' owners
and do an in-place upgrade?
Or should I install directly Exch 2K, move mailboxes, etc?

Collaboration Advice
Hello all,
I'm trying to design an Exchange solution for a small office of 3 users on
Small Business Server 2003. For the last couple years one of the users has
kept all of the business information in a single PST file in Outlook. The
critical part is that there are over 7500 contact items and the journal
records activities with each contact. So far so good, but now he wants to
share this PST file with the other two users and give them the ability to
make changes to it.
First of all can Exchange do this? The critical part is a shared contact
list and the ability to track activities on each contact. A friend of mine
suggested that Microsoft CRM is geared more for this purpose.
Any thoughts & suggestions are appreciated. Tag: Exchange 5.5 Authrest tool Tag: 124170

Exchange disk partitions, Deployment Guide and WINS
Reading the deployment guide on exchange 2003 it states that one of the
requirementsis WINS. I have done three different tests without WINS and
it seems to work fine, does everybody have it installed and if not have

Also the guide says the disk should be partitioned as follows:
System Partition, I am presuming is the OS partition.
Partition that stores exchange binaries. (Program Files for Exchange?)
Partition containing transaction log files.
Partition containing database files.
Partition containing other exchange files. (MailBox's)

Securities Exchange Commission Archive All Email Rule
The Securities Exchange Commission requires all financial advisory firms to
keep copies of all incoming and outgoing emails for legal reason. I am
thinking about getting Small Business Server Premium 2003 which has Exchange
2003 for a financial advisory client of mine. Can someone tell me whether
Exchange 2003 has any build-in features that will fulfill the SEC rule?
Thanks. Tag: Exchange 5.5 Authrest tool Tag: 124157
Event ID 1047 MSExchangeMU
HI
I have installed Exchange Server 2003 on a win2kDC SP4. Unfortunately no
virtual directories are created within IIS for Exchange the directories do
appear in the Exchange system Manager.
The only error in the event log is Event ID 1047 MSExchangeMU
Which describes the problem that I appear to experincing however I have not
demoted or promted to a domain controller with exchange installed as the
article describes.(822575)
I have removed Exchange and cleaned up the registry as per article (833396)
including IIS related tasks.
Reinstall SPK4 for Windows 2000 then reinstall IIS and Exchange 2003 same
problem.
I have tried adsutil.vbs delete ds2mb with the out put that the path does
not exist. I have opened the metabase.bin with the metabase editor and
clearly the path is missing.
Any suggestions??? Tag: Exchange 5.5 Authrest tool Tag: 124151
Collecting mail from a VPN server
We are trialing a windows mobile 2003 device to gather email on the road.
Although we have set up our VPN server connections OK we have had to take
down the authentication and encription methods to get it to work as there are
insufficient settings on the device for these methods. Obviously this
situation is not ideal. Does anyone know where these settings are?
I am not an IT specilist and have been asked to get this info from our IT
guy so please keep it in english.
cheers.

Exchange Enterprise
Hello,
I'm hoping someone out there has done this...we have an Exchange 2003 server
that was originally configured with the Standard edition; we tried to
reinstall the Exchange server with Enterprise; we received NO errors, but it
still indicates that it is Standard. Any ideas?

Re-running /Forestprep /Domainprep
Hi all,
We deployed active directory ahead of Exchange 2003 (circ. 12 months).
However, we knew we would deploy Exchange 2003 and ran /forestprep
/domainprep on the AD ahead of time.
We now have a single forest, single domain worldwide across 14 locations
used for authentication primarily.
The issue is that the person that ran /forestprep /domainprep used his own
account.
We have two options (I think).
1. Rename the account OR
2. Re-run /Forestprep /domainprep.
Question:
Option 2 - Will rerunning (choosing a new account) /forestprep /domainprep
cause a global DC rebuild even if the schema has been extended before?
Will this process create huge amounts of replication globally?

Removing last 5.5 server from 2003 Exchange
Alright,
I've got a Windows 2003 Server machine running Exchange 2003 Enterprise.
We've got a Windows 2000 machine, upgrade from NT, running 5.5 There's a
third Exchange 2003 server running due to some issues we ran into trying to
upgrade from 2003 standard to 2003 Enterprise Exchange. SRS is running on
the 3rd one. (That one was set up with support from Microsoft.)
I disabled the LAN connector on the 5.5 machine to confirm everything was
migrated...and it was. So I re-enabled it and disabled all of the Exchange
services as per the documentation. I then started the 5.5 Administrator
program on the 2003 server in order to remove the 5.5 machine.
It wouldn't connect. It tells me "The Microsoft Exchange Server computer
does not respond. Microsoft Exchange Directory ID no:
DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM"
So, I figure I have to connect to the 3rd machine (the 2003 machine set up
by MS support). This time it hangs for about 15 seconds before saying the
exact same thing. I can't even Browse.
So, how do I get rid of this 5.5 server? Tag: Exchange 5.5 Authrest tool Tag: 124143
I am hoping someone can help me find the Exchange 5.5 Authrest tool. The
one that came on the CD doesn't work.
