Dear All,

I currently run a couple of Ex2000 servers, and have been interested by some
of the new features of Ex2003. In particular I have noticed the 'new' (in
exchange anyway) ActiveSync feature. I have noticed references on MS's site
referencing that this operates over "standard HTTP".

However, I've been unable to find detailed information. In particular, does
anyone know whether Activesync can indeed operate through the just the one
port with Ex2003? Presumably if it can, this involves some change to the
ActiveSync client on the Pocket PC, but again, I have been unable to find
specific details despite a long time searching!

If anyone knows anything about this, I would be most grateful for your
input.

Many thanks,

Toby.

OK - further Googling has thrown up

http://www.microsoft.com/sverige/nr/rdonlyres/626DB05E-9CB2-4A4C-9F76-054AF5400D95/6482/Tech2Ex2003MobilityMobileWeek.ppt

or, if this line breaks

http://tinyurl.com/l7mn

Looking through it would suggest that Exhange Activesync can work over
HTTP/HTTPS(SSL), but I have yet to find a detailed technical document for
this and how the ActiveSync client on PPC knows to just use http rather than
the normal ports.

Anyone out there tried this?

Toby.

Still not managed to find out much more about the specifics of this. If
anyone has used Activesync with Exch2003 I would really appreciate them
pitching in.

Thanks for that Troels. My personal PPC is an iPaq 3870 and the PPC 2003
update is not yet available in the UK (and probably won't be for a little
time yet). I'm sure I saw somewhere that PPC 2002 was the minimum required,
but it is useful to know that maybe this only works with the fix for no SSL
you mentioned.

What would be really useful is if someone (or even someone from MSFT) could
provide some more details and post a link to any pages with more detailed
information. There seems to be a genuine gap in documentation here, so I'm
sure that any pointers would help a lot of people out there.

Thanks again,

Toby.

Ben

I am running PPC 2002 and using Server ActiveSync just fine. The setup I
used is as follows:

On PocketPC/Host: Upgrade to Activesync 3.7.
Disable SSL check (download CertChk.exe from Microsoft)
Configure ActiveSync with server info and credentials

On Exchange 2003 server:
If you enable SSL on the Exchange VD (I did as I wanted to use the
Forms-based authentication for OWA), make sure that it is not required.
Make sure that all Mobile Services are enabled for the user (Exchange
Features tab from ADU&C)
In ESM, I also went to the Mobile Services section under Global Settings and
added a carrier for my domain.

I really don't think there was anything else that I had to do. I should
also mention that this server is in a different forest/domain than my host
PC, so I had to set up a full trust between domains.

I suspect that there will be more documentation available once Exchange 2003
is released to the public (I am seeing public launch is mid-October from MS
website).

Good to know that someone has it up and running. Thanks for those tips Ben.
Also, it is helpful that PPC 2003 is not required. I take it, though, that
when you say update to activesync 3.7 you just mean the desktop host, as I
was not aware that one can update the client on PPC (although older MIS
documentation appears to imply that)?

Check with your PPC mfg. for any new Flash updates - there may be one that
states that it adds support for Server ActiveSync. But yes, ActiveSync 3.7
gets installed on the host. I can't remember if installing 3.7 on the host
updates the files on the PPC as well, but I know that I have the option on
my PPC ActiveSync options to include a Server. I have Server ActiveSync
working both through the host, and wireless (802.11b).

When you said up servername er you then writing
http://servername/
or
http://servername/exchange

I do belive the slash must turn this way [ / ] right ==?

btw, I did find a update to my Device on HP homepage (I have a jornada 568)

I still get the error code
Unable to connect. Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and try
again.
Error code: CONNMGR_36

when I try to sync

Some useful points here - I think we are starting to get to the bottom of
the issue. Will report back when I get it all up and running.

Toby.

P.S. Thanks to all who contributed, and I hope that MS has some detailed
