I don't recall that OWA 5.5 will run on 2003 server but never thought to use
IIS in isolation mode. For what it's worth, 5.5 is not supported on Windows
2003 server at all so this is likely an area that you'd be walking down
alone meaning that you'd have to do the development and would not be able to
expect support at any time. Would it work? It's possible but not likely.
As for using a newer version of OWA with 5.5, the answer to that is no. The
newer versions use WebDAV/HTTP to access the data store. 5.5 doesn't speak
WebDAV. 5.5 OWA is the only version of OWA that will work with Exchange
5.5.
