    - RPC over HTTP, NAT firewall, authentication problems Rpc over http NAT port directing I have recently done an upgrade from 2000 domain to an entire 2003 domain so I can run rpc over http. I have one exchange 2003 member server two 2003 domain controllers and a NAT firewall. Iâ??ve set up exchange server to use rpc over http and triple checked my set up. The outlook 2003 client connects internally, but when I use an IP address outside the firewall I continue to get prompted for my authentication ( â??connect to Xserver.domain.comâ?? ). I have port 80 and 443 forwarded to the mail server, and if I change the setup of the mail account to, â??http, connect to an http e-mail server such as â?¦..â??, I get a successful connection to the server, but I loose the extra attributes of exchange like the calendar, Global Address book, etc. Iâ??ve run a snmp trap on the outlook client to trouble shoot, there are ports 1124, 1025, 1089, etc running. Iâ??m wondering if there should be a port forwarder to the domain controller / global catalog server on my firewall? Any other trouble shooting recommendations?     - restricting RPC over HTTPS Hi; We're running Exchange 2003 on Windows Server 2003 with the latest service packs and patches installed. We've configured RPC over HTTPs. It works just fine. However I was wondering if there is any way of restricting access to RPC over HTTPS. Basically I would like only a few roaming users to be able to use it. Their source IPs will change so I can't restrict by IP on the firewall. I tried using client side certificates but that doesn't seem to work. Do you have any suggestions? What are the possibilities?     - Exchange: Internal domain email address for external internet based email accounts Hi, Management want to arrange it that affiliated individuals can have an email address alias from our domain, that will automatically be forwarded on to their internet based email accounts (hotmail, yahoo mail etc). I know I can do this by creating user accounts with mailboxes and then setting a forward to a contact containing their internet based email addresses, but this seems rather inefficient - there is no need for their mails to accumulate on mailboxes on our email servers. Is there a better solution, where outside users can email to an address that looks like it sits on our domain, but where our Exchange system will just forward the mails on to their own personal inboxes?     - Exchange set up Hello, I was having a big Active Directory / everything issue with my domain controller. This server has basically had a lot of hands on it and things have been going wacky and I would like to start from scratch. Since there are only 50 users, the adding users over again won't be a big issue. What I am most worried about is the exchange. I will also need to reinstall exchange 2007 and would like obviously to save everyone's email. I have seen a whole slue of ideas on ost to pst conversion, but I would like to keep the users out of this if possible. Is there any way I can backup the mail store and put it back when the re-install is complete? I am unsure as to whether or not SIDs come into play here when the exchange server is syncing with the new AD and the users don't have the same SID as they did when the store was previously mounted. I was thinking there might be a good way out there to export and import the AD from the old server, but I wasn't too successful on finding documentation on my exact situation of looking to wipe the system clean and re do everything. If this would make more sense, can someone please point me in the correct direction to export AD and import it correctly into the new Domain controller and then also whether they will keep the same SID's or for that matter whether it even matters at all to exchange...     - new server -- need info please I'm looking for basic info -- maybe a link or questions answered. I am replacing my Win2000/Exchange2000 server with a new Win2003/Exchange2003 server. I THINK that the process is simply: 1.Run dcpromo on new server and make peer Domain controller (move master roles) 2. Install Exchange 2003 on new server 3. Move mailboxes and public folders to new server 4. Change Workstations' Outlook to reflect new server 5. Shutdown old server My questions are: 1. Do I run dcpromo BEFORE installing Exchange or doesn't it matter? 2. Do I need to use the same Exchange organization name or a different one, or doesn't it matter? 3. Do I need to move anything other than public folders and mailboxes? 4. Am I missing anything that I should know about before I go and screw up my systems? 5. Is there info on this type of change-over. I can find masses of info on changing from 5.5, but almost nothing on changing from 2000 (hopefully this is because there is very little to it).     - Removing the last Exchange 2003 Server after a 2007 Upgrade I have recently installed a Exchange 2007 server into my organisation, and all is well. I'm ready to remove the (only) Exchange 2003, but I can't find any documentation to guide me through the process. I've used KB articles for removing the first Exchange 2003 server during a recent Exchange server migration, and prior to that the removal of the last Exchange 2000 server. However, I can't find any similar documentation to guide me through migrating any remaining roles and services from the Exchange 2003 to the Exchange 2007 server, before I attempt the actual un-install.     - OWA and Mobile access. DMZ configuration for EX2007? My situation is a bit unusual due to Balkanized network, email and IT security responsibilities. Basically, I will need to setup something in the DMZ to handle Outlook Web Access and Mobile Access from external points. All email delivery and sending is handled internally so I don't need that to cross the DMZ. I pickup and send through enterprise and they take care of AV and spam. However, they don't (and can not for other reasons) provide mobile access and OWA which is critical to our needs. I've got about 80 mailboxes currently running Exchange 2003 with direct internet connection but will be migrating to 2007 and setting it up on the internal network. OWA and mobile are currently working well. Looking at the roles, it appears I'd need to configure an edge transport in the DMZ but it's not clear to me how this also handles OWA and mobile access. Most of what I read refers to the SMTP functions and leaves the OWA and mobile to the imagination. I've been investigating port forwarding but I'm not sure what ports and the powers that be have stated they don't want to do it. I'm open to suggestions on the best means to set this up. Jerry M.     - Hub transport selection algoritm Hi All, I'm currently struggeling with the following issue. The company I work for wants to implement Exchange 2007 globally. We would like to create a sitedefinition (dedicated Exchange) that spans seperate physical locations in the Netherlands(NL) and the United Kingdom(UK). We want to use Cluster Continous Replication to provide resilience. This poses an issue as CCR does not work on multiroled servers, so we would need seperate hub transport servers and CASs. To provide network efficiency we would like to setup servers in UK and in NL. If we do that mail send from NL mailboxes to other NL mailboxes (even on the same server) can be send to UK transport servers and vice versa. We would like to know how the mailbox servers chooses its hub transport. Does it only look at the site definition and round robin across all hub transport or does it also use some sort of other algoritm?     - Setting up Exchange 2000 lab - Mailbox rights are not populating We are setting up a Windows 2000 Domain lab with Exchange 2000 and after creating several accounts in AD, when you go into the "Exchange Advanced" tab and click "Mailbox Rights" the only thing in there is SELF but it should also have domain admins, enterprise admins and so forth. We waited over night thinking that there may be a process that runs which would populate that but it didn't. Any suggestions?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - can't assign Delegates only one of my users is having this problem but I've tried it from multiple systems (as that user) with the same result so I know it's not tied to his system. When he tries to assign a Delegate he gets back: "The Delegates settings were not saved correctly. Unable to activate free/busy information. You do not have sufficient permission to perfomr this operation on this object. See the folder contact or your system administrator." I found a couple of articles that led me to believe that it's a right's issue so I added the user to his own object in AD and gave him full rights to no avail. Any thoughts?     - Anyone Applied DST KB926666 Yet? We are runnning W2K3 SP2 and I am reading the articles regarding the DST patch. Article KB912918 (mobile devices or shared mailboxes) has caught my attention. It appears that the new version of Store.exe that will be upgraded in the DST patch will change the way that permissions work. No longer is it enough to have full mailbox priviledges but you must also set a Send As permission too on accounts that open additional mailboxes. I am worried that this will blow up our BlackBerry Enterprise Server and our numerous people that open additional mailboxes. Has anyone updated their E2K3 servers with the new DST patch?     - PFmigrate from 5.5 to Exchange 2003 I am currently in AD mixed mode and Exchange 5.5/2003 mixed mode. I have four Exchange servers located at four geographic locations. I have public folders and a few custom forms on my main 5.5 server in siteA. I ran PFMigrate with destination to my Exchange2003 server in SiteA. On my Exchange2003 server in siteA I enabled replication of public folders to my other Exchange sites. Is there anything else I need to do? The forms appear to replicate, but mailboxes on Exchange2003 can not open the forms using Outlook 2002 SP3 or Outlook 2003.     - forestprep I ran forestprep and a memebr server (standard 03/exchg 03) after adding .net, .asp IIs and etc. and I am not getting the Organization Name screen. The screen that specifies a name for your exchange organization. Could this be because I have the trial version installed? Is there anywhere to check if there is an organization name already chose?     - Mail sent to users not in active directory (recipient filtering and tar pitting) Background: We have windows server 2003 SP1 running exchange server 2003 SP2, and we have Sunbelt Ninja configured to use the RBL (zen.spamhaus.org) and SPF (don't allow result hard fail, allow results pass, neutral, no rule, soft fail, unknown rule, and unknown mechanism). We receive a lot of e-mails directed to usernames that don't exist on our exchange server. We would like to block those at the SMTP connection step, rather than accept the SMTP connection and then issue NDR's to the supposed (usually faked if the e-mail was spam) return address. Questions: Is it currently accepted practice to enable recipient filtering and tar pitting as described in the articles below? If someone sends an e-mail to 10 usernames at our domain, and 9 of them exist in active directory but 1 of them doesn't exist in active directory, then will the 9 e-mails be delivered but the 1 e-mail will be blocked at the SMTP step such that the sender's SMTP server will/should notify the sender that the 1 e-mail could not be delivered? Besides SMTP connections that are trying to deliver e-mails that are directed to usernames that don't exist in active directory, what other types of SMTP connections will be delayed by enabling tar pitting (particularly SMTP connections that are not trying to send spam)? The MS article KB842851 says that if you enable the tar pit feature, you should carefully monitor the performance of your SMTP server, and you should analyze the traffic patterns on the server to make sure that tar pitting is not disrupting or delaying ordinary traffic. How does one do those things? Anything else we might need to know before implementing these solutions?     - corruption on a single user After migrating my users to exchange 2003 I have one user who is experiencing some "wierdness". When he first launches Outlook he gets a message "Unable too add to the server junk e-mail lists, you are over the size allowed on the server. The Junk E-Mail filter will be disabled until your Junk E-Mail Lists have been reduced to the size allowed on the server." even though he has nothing in his Safe or Block lists.     - SMTP Service(s) listed in Queue After having my Exchange server go live 2 days ago I see in the Queues section of System manager about 40 lines that read "SMTP Service - .....com (SMTP Connector)" where .... are various names like jamail.nl and kaiote.com. I'm thinking that because my server wasn't properly replying with a 550 unknown user for the first day that these are bounce messages that my server is trying to send back to the spammers that were sending to unknown users on my network and will eventually go away?     - Exchange 2207 CCR on std (non-MNS) cluster Hi all, My client is a relatively small business - instead of racks full of blades, we're talking about a handful of servers in a single site. So you guy who are used to implementing a 16-node Exchange cluster with a SAN the size of a boxcar need to scale down your thinking to follow this scenario. My client uses a SCC-type cluster under Exchange 2003, and hosts some other low-impact clustered virtual servers such as file shares for business records (Word and Excel docs) on the same cluster. Given the amount of mailbox traffic Exchange is loafing, so it's no problem to put a few other things on the same cluster. Normally a small business like this might not use a cluster, but my client likes the extra reliability and automatic failover. Now we're looking at buying a new server and upgrading to Exchange 2007 within the next year. With Exchange 2007, Microsoft seems to recommend CCR over SCC as a better high availability choice because of the two complete copies of the database, and because you can save money by skipping the shared storage (SCSI in my case). However, my client likes the redunancy of a cluster for his business data as well as for Exchange, so he wants a new cluster with shared storage. The Microsoft Cluster folks recommend that you stay away from a MNS cluster if you can because there's less chance of "losing the quorum". The Exchange folks don't necessarily disagree but have offered the MNS option to reduce costs and allow for geo clusters. With this background, I wondered if I can create a standard (not MNS) Windows cluster server, put the business data shares on shared storage, and then install Exchange in a CCR configuration instead of a SCC configuration. It would put more disks on each node and less shared storage, but for better reliability that's a small price to pay. Besides, the per-node SAS drives are cheaper than the shared Ultra Scsi drives. The Exchange documentation assumes that the SCC configuration will be used with a standard cluster, and the CCR configuration will be used with a MNS cluster. However I couldn't find any statement either way about whether an CCR configuration will work on a standard cluster, and I certainly couldn't find a statement that it's not a supported configuration. So I tried it. It turns out that when you try to install Exchange in CCR mode, setup complains because it doesn't see the Majority Node Set resource. However, it's easy to add a File Share Majority Node Set resource to your existing quorum group; since the cluster is not a MNS cluster Windows ignores the resource, but it has no problem if you create it. With a dummy MNS resource in the cluster to bypass the overly simplistic Exchange setup prerequisites check, the actual install worked fine and CCR started working flawlessly. Failover and failback work, both from within the Exchange Management console and from the Cluster Administrator. Nothing funny in the event logs. Also, the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer said everything was A-OK. So, if you find yourself with similar requirements, I'm here to tell you that all you need to do to get Exchange to install in CCR mode is to create a dummy MNS resource. You can probably delete it afterwords but I intend to leave it so I can install future service packs. Also, if anybody from the Exchange product team is reading, please fix your prerequisite checker to allow installation of a CCR mailbox store on any working cluster (you don't need any shared storage, so what do you care what kind of cluster it is)? Finally, if anybody sees any strong reason to stay away from this scenario please let me know. I could alway set up Exchange in SCC mode instead but I haven't seen anything that says what I'm trying to do is unsupported so why not get the benefits of CCR?     - Unix mail to Global Distribution List We've set up a Global Distribution List on Exchange and it works fine from Outlook. We have a Unix application that needs to mail this group. This does not work. Changing the app to mail individuals does work. Is there an option in Distribution List setup to allow this? This Exchange 2007 was installed on a new server, currently, both are online. I have a question here about the Public Folder Database, after installing Exchange Server 2007, the Public Folder Database was there (in Second Storage Group), I didn't create it and I do need to copy public folders from the old Exchange server. The problem is that the log of Second Storage Group is on Drive C (default path), I'm allowed to move the path of Public Folder Database, but not allowed to move the log of Second Storage Group. Besides, I could not remove the Public Folder Database. If I set up any other database, the error for deleteing the Public Folder Database is that other database is using the Public Folder Database. If I removed all other databases, the error is that the Public Folder Database is in Synchorization or something else. My question is whether it is possible to move Public Folder Database to other storage group? I prefer not to delete any other database. Thanks.     - Configuring Exchange 2003 to deliver to a specific IP Hi. I've just had forced upon me an upgrade from exchange 5.5 to exchange 2003. I have a situation whereby I need to configure the exchange 2003 server to deliver all mail for a specific domain to a given internal IP address, rather than letting it send out to the internet - we have a corporate WAN across which I can transport internal mail to another server without using the public address for the SMTP space. In exchange 5.5, this was as easy as going into "Connections", "Internet Mail Service", "Connections" and then selecting "Specify by email domain", then adding the domain name and other server address.     - OWA - "Microsoft Exchange issued an unexpected response (404)" I have just installed a clean install of Exchange 2007 on a new server and moved a mailbox over from my Exchange 2000 server. I can access my mailbox fine using Outlook and all function seem to be working very well. When I access my account via OWA I can see my inbox and read emails, but every time I try to do something I get the error in the subject. This includes deleting an email, sending a new one, opening the calendar, etc. Initially I had the problem that when i first logged on and it brought up the select language screen when I hit ok it directed me to owa \lang.owo and said that the file does not exist which it does not aywhere on the server. To fix this I found a way to set the language for all clients with a shell command. This allows me to get into my mail but with the problem described above. Anything I have read says 404 is file not found error so I suspect there is still something not right with my configuration either in IIS or Exchange. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.     - Moving Exchange 2003 to a new server I posted a similar question a few weeks ago but wanted to start this one because we're almost ready to begin our new Exchange 2003 install. We have a current Exchange Server 2003 box and want to move all of the mail stores/mailboxes over to a new 2003 server. I just wanted to clarify the process. Here is what I'm thinking: -Bring up the new server, running Win2003 -Install Exchange Server 2003 and join the existing organization Now at this point I'm guessing we should be able to go to System Manager on either box and see the other server? Here is where I'm not sure which steps to do first: -Do we move mailboxes right off the bat? -Or do we follow this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/822931 The article states to do several things prior to moving mailboxes, but in the earlier posting I was told to move mailboxes, then follow this article. Is it recommended to move mailboxes during off-hours? Or can it happen during business hours? I'm assuming users will be locked out of their mailbox while it's being moved. What is the recommendation for the number of mailboxes being moved at once -- (i.e., should be move a certain amount at a time)? We actually have multiple storage groups -- do we create them on the new server and then move mailboxes into them? And finally (I think) -- when the mailboxes are moved how will the mail flow to them? Meaning, at what point do we need to change our firewall/mx records to point to the new server? Since upgrading to Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 last weekend all of a sudden
disabled accouts are receiving email instead of bouncing it with a NDR. Some
disabled accounts have forwarding rules and they are now forwarding. Is this
a bug or a Microsoft "enhancement"?

Jim, see if you have this hotfix installed, if the disabled self
account is granted the associated external account right, it will be
able to receive emails although it is disabled.

A hotfix is available to change the way that Exchange Server 2003 SP2
handles a disabled Active Directory user account that is associated
with an Exchange Server 2003 mailbox
