    - Authentication port Hello! Is there a way to change the port (135) that Exchange (any version) uses for authentication when users send mail through the server? My brother's company has authentication required to prevent use by spammers, and the ISP recently blocked ports 134-139 at their routers before it ever reaches the company's firewall. If they could change the authentication port, that would solve the problem (as would getting the ISP to leave the ports open and let users deal with blocking the ports themselves).     - Exchange 2003 as "at home" play toy? Here's the Dumb Newb Question of the Week, if not the year. Bear with me: I have copies of the beta2's of Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook 2003 client, (not yet installed) and no prior experience with Exchange. I'd like to try some beginner's learning, and experiment with them together in a working relationship. Alas and alack, I have two free computers at home but with no true network between them - just a hub (peer to peer I guess). Is there any way on earth I could emulate a client/server relationship between Exchange and Outlook such that I could see and fiddle with how the two products work together - just for learning purposes? Alternately, might I possibly be able to use the Internet somehow, given that I can make a DSL (dynamic IP) connection with one machine, and a different simulantaneous connection with the other machine...? Could that be made to work during a session once I knew what the dynamically assigned IP's were for each machine? Or would I be better advised to use those CD's as coasters and forget about it?     - Exchange2003, ActiveSync and that helpful http_500 error on Smartphone I think I've read every thread, implemented every suggestion and followed every KB article I can find on this issue but I'm still having problems - which brings me here. I've read that people have got this sorted AND use Forms based Authentication along with SSL but I'm not one of them. This is what I want to achieve. I am running the Front-End and Back-End on one server. OWA & OMA both work with SSL. I've created the extra virtual directory mentioned in KB822177 & KB817379. I've also worked through KB311830.     - Emails seem to go out, but not in... more complex than it sounds, HELP! Odd things are about on my network... First, a quick glimps at the secton of my network I am focusing on; Exchange 5.5 server on NT 4 OS with SP6a I also have a win 2K server that houses an email filtering program known as GFI Mail Essentials and Mail Security. This program filters outgoing and incoming email for viruses, spam, porno crap, etc... as of friday (48 hours or so ago) my emailing has been quite sporatic. In fact, it seemed to all happen after a mild, quick lightning storm which did cause my UPS to click on for a few seconds. All internal email is fine and dandy of course now, but outgoing and incoming from the outside world seems to be an issue. It appears that every so often an email will make it into my network from the outside world, but Ive tested like nuts with about 4 or 5 other email addresses (some of my personal ones and those of friends helping me out) and only 40 to 50% of those get in. Emails go out fine, but only to SOME domains. For example, every email I send from work to my yahoo account make it in no time flat, but emails going to my bellsouth account never go. It seemed so odd to me that some go and some dont, and some come and others dont. SO I Called my T-1 providers to let them know. They were nice but didnt admit fault. So I went in today thiniking surely if it is their fault it is fixed by now but it WAS STILL THERE... I know this is a general question, so I guess I am just looking for general ideas...     - Exchange Outlook Web Access & Windows SharePoint Services Hi, Is it possible to install Windows SharePoint Services on the same server as Exchange 2003, with Outlook Web Access enabled. All I can find is that it can't be done, but these are all topics about SharePoint Portal server/SharePoint Team Services.     - Can exchange collect from ISP mailbox? Can exchange collect from ISP mailbox? I don't have a registed domain or static ip from my ISP, but would like to practice administrating a exchange server. I would like to have the exchange server to pull the mail from my ISP mail server and then send it out. I think I know the answer but I hope I would be wrong and it is possible.     - Exchange 5.5 Hello, I have a NT 4 being the Domain Controller and Exchange 5.5 installed on another Win2000 server. Now that my NT4 is crashed and I have lost all my SAM. I have set up NT4 on a new machine but I found that my exchange is not working and have authentication errors when trying to start those Exchange Services.     - Exchange Server 2003 Shutdown After installing Exchange 2003 Server on my Windows 2003 Server, shutdown of the PC now takes at least 10 minutes. Server shutdown was quick before install of Exchange 2003 Server. If I shutdown the Exchange services before shutdown. The shutdown process takes place as normal (quick). It appears the slow shutdown may be related the information store service. Anyone have any ideas or see this in Exchange 2003 Server? What can fix this? Thanks!     - Exchange 2003 OWA I am testing out Exchange 2003...and have installed it on two machines in my domain. It works great using the outlook client on the LAN. However...OWA is messed up somehow...If I restart either of the Exchange servers and then connect to the OWA running on either of the exchange servers with a mailbox that is on that exchange server it works FINE. But after about 4 or 5 hours it no longer works. With one of the two scenarios: 1. OWA opens fine....but in the Inbox pane it says "Loading" and a box pops up that says: "A run-time error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug? Line: 1018. Error: Invalid Procedure call or argument 2. OWA loads but all the icons look like images that did not load correctly and the rest of the screen is white.. Both of these scenarios happen whether I access OWA on the LAN or from the internet.     - Uninstalling Exchange 2003 Hi I am an MSDN subscriber, who installed Exchange 2003 on a machine to do some tests. However, I now need to uninstall it. When I try to uninstall it, I get the following reported: "The component 'Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services' cannot be assigned the action 'Remove' because: - One or more users currently use a mailbox store on this server. These users must be moved to a mailbox store on a different server or be mail disabled before uninstalling this server." The problem is: a). I didn't ever get to the point of putting any users onto the server, it was purely installed for MSDN evaluation. It was never a production server b). I can't identify which users its referring to, and how to remove them (ie. I didn't create any) c). I don't know how to mail disable them Can anyone help??     - Migration 5.5 to 2000 Hi all, have some problems after migrating exchange 5.5 to 2000. Everytime I reboot the server I get an error message in application protocol that says that system attendant cannot logon to database (event id 1022). Have moved all mailboxes from the old to the new server - clients can access their mailboxes successfull. Another problem are the public folders. Replicated all public folders (almost contact elements) to the new server. But only clients with administrative rights can access them (event id´s 9562 and 9551). It doesn´t matter wich access rights I grant. In system manager I`m not able to open public folders. All articles I read say that it has something to do with AD-replication. We have purchased our licenses for Exchange 2003 Server and would like to do an in place upgrade to the released version. The exchange site says this is possible but I can't find any instructions.     - Instant Messenger setup I have setup IM in the server per the MS setup document including IM server and enabling user accounts. When I try to login to Windows messenger on a staff's Xp box I get the following message: "Signing in to Communications Service failed because the service is temporarily unavailable.     - In-place Migration from Exchange 5.5 There is a inplace method for migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000. I don't see any hint of that method for the upgrade from 5.5 to 2003. All the grandiose documentation talks about multiple forest and domains and mixed mode stuff, but neglects the little guy with one Exchange v5.5 server needed to upgrade to Exchange 2003. I already have 5.5 running on Win2K w/ AD and the ADC running. I don't have yet another server to migrate to. Does anyone know of simple in-place upgrade documentation?     - Is Exchange the right product for this ? I have two clients who would like to be able to share data between two computer both with Outlook 2000 installed. They want to be able to access the same set of Contacts and the same Calendar, however, keep their e-mails and everything else seperate. Am I correct in assuming that an Exchange Server is the way to go? If so, which version of Exchnage would you recommend? We are only dealing with two individuals and I don't think any more are going to be every added. I've got plenty more questions, but I'll save them until I'm sure the best way to do this is via an Exchange Server.     - HTTP 1.1 500 error with Ex2k3 front end, ex2k back-end I'm actually running an exchange 2000 in cluster. recently i added two new servers (clean install ) as front end server with exchange 2003 (w2k3). now when i try to connect to any mailbox from the front-end OWA, i'm getting the error HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error. I have enabled the form based login, so i'm able to get the login windows box, but anytime i enter a user mailbox that is on the back-end cluster server i'm getting the same error.     - Restore Exchange 5.5 form the dead Hi All, I've been given a dead Exchange 5.5 server on a W2K server. This server died and there is no backup (they had arcserver with exchange agent, but it didnt tape anything from 2001 :( ) But never the less i've made an ghost copy of the disks just before they died. the only problem is that its the only thing i've got about this server. there is absolutley no documentation. There is an other w2k DC in the domain. As far as my exchange knowledge goes do i net the site AND the organisation name to restore the DB's so they can continue working. Waht can i do to retrieve this info. When is mount the ghost image to another PC/Server it would boot. Even if i try to use de w2k cd recovery option. This RC option hangs the pc/server.     - Reboot EXC5.5 or stop SA and then Reboot? Hi, We have 14 Exchange 5.5 SP4 servers running on NT4 SP6a within our domain. Every time I have to do any work on exchange I use to stop the SA service but it takes forever and ever. A few times I waited for 3-4 hours and then ended the task and rebooted the server. Luckily everything came up fine. Recently I tried upgrading Exchange SP4 on one of the servers (although it had SP4 on it Exchange Admin was not showing it) the upgrade started and after 2 hours it was still preparing for install (I did not stop any Exchange or AV related services manually) so I ended the upgrade task and rebooted the server aging all came up fine. Now I do not stop any Exchange services just reboot the server. I had done this on 4 servers yesterday as we are installing a new product on our network, which means that all servers have to be rebooted twice. Although all the servers come back up fine, I am not sure if I am doing the right thing be rebooting servers in this fashion. Could there be some other problem with my Exchange servers that they take that long to shut down if stopping through stopping SA service?     - How to find site name We lost a Exchange 5.5 server. I was pulled on site to help rebuild the server. We have the priv and pub edb files from the old server but we do not know what the site name or the organzation name is. The txt file that usually has this info is gone. Hi everyone, I am getting ready to roll out my first exchange 2003 server on the following hardware: Dell PowerEdge 1650: 3, 68 GB Hard Drives 1 GB RAM Hardware RAID controller OS = Windows server 2003 My question is: What is the best hardware configuration? I thought: RAID 5 with Partition C for OS and exchange = 16 GB Partition D for data stores = 110 GB Partition E for transaction logs and pagefile = 10 GB but I have a good friend with a lot of exchange experience who said: Mirror Drives 0 and 1 on the mirror: Partition C for OS and exchange = 15 GB Partiton D for data stores and transaction log files = 53 GB Drive 2 - no fault tolerance Partion C for scratch, service packs and for pagesfile = 68 GB His logic is that it is easier to recover a mirror, and that the performance gain is negligable, on a 3 spindle RAID 5.     - setting up rules on Exchange 5.5 server Hello, our SMTP mail software is able to detect SPAM and insert additional text (such as "SPAM EMAIL") into the subject line, to act as a warning. Once the SMTP software forwards these spam emails to the exchange 5.5 sp4 server, I would like to have a rule set up on the exchange server to pick out all the emails that have the "SPAM EMAIL" text in their subject line and relocate them in a public folder. I get the error "the email address does not match the username and password of the user logged into the computer" I am logged in with the administrator, and I have tried every conceivable combination for username, password, and domain.     - Exchange 2003 Public Folder Replication I have installed an Exch 2003 server into my Exch 5.5 org. Active directory appears to be updating properly for the recipients (the e-mail address shows up in the user object properly). However, public folders do not appear to be replicating... I have identified that the RUS is not properly stamping the proxy address on the Public Folder Store, but I'm not getting any of the errors that are listed in the knowledge base articles related to this problem...     - Exch 5.5/NT4 to Exch 2003/WIN2003 - Best Plan? I need a plan to migrate Exchange 5.5 on NT4.0 to Exchange 2003 on Win2003. The 5.5 is on Domain "A" and the box is a PDC and is the only box on domain A. I plan to trash domain A after the migration.     - Exchange 2003 Best Practice - TCPIP DNS Entry We have 3 Windows Server 2003 servers. Two are DC/GC's running AD Integrated DNS and the third is a MS Exchange 2003 box (member server). My question is: In the TCP/IP properties on the Exch 2003 box should the primary and secondary DNS entry be pointed to the 2 DC/GC machines with AD Integrated DNS? OR Should I install DNS on the Exchange 2003 server as a secondary DNS server, point the primary DNS entry in the TCPIP properties to itself (the Exch box) and the secondary entry to one of the DC/GC's?     - Pointers required for EX 5.5 -> 2000 first-timer Hi, Having nursed a Small Business Server 4.5 for many years, I finally got a new box with SBS 2000. Having worked on Win2K, XP and Win2K3 machines in the meantime, I have a pretty good knowledge of where most stuff has moved in the newer version of the OS, but Exchange is giving me the biggest headache. I'd appreciate a sanity-check on a couple of points: Recipients --- This is fundamental. As far as I can tell, EX2000 doesn't have a Recipients node anything like EX5.5 -- you don't go and see a list of "John", "Fred", "Mary" anywhere. I'm assuming this is all handled centrally as part of AD now, but can someone just confirm that for me..? In Ex System Manager | Admin | Servers | Storage Group | Mailbox Store | Mailboxes, I see a list of some of the users. I'm working on the assumption that it' sonly listing like Me & Administrator, as those are the only users who've ever logged in -- once I get this live, and people use the server, can I assume this will get "populated" with the rest? Routing --- In EX5.5, Internet Mail Service, there was the Routing tab, where you listed all the domains that should be considered "incoming" (we have 5 or 6). As far as I can tell, in Ex System Manager | Admin | Routing Gp | Connectors | SMTP, the Address Space tab is the equivalent? If it is, is it ok to have it allow "*" for the domain?? If I'm wrong, where do I now specify this?     - Issue: Setting up Web Accessible Public Folder Hi All, I am experiencing a wierd issue when making a new Web Store in Public folders to develop in. I start by doing the following: 1. Create a new Public Folder Tree 2. Create a New Public store and bind it to new tree 3. Create an HTTP entry in the HTTP protocals for the new tree and add script permissions so I can develop in it. 4. I add Frontpage Extension so I can develop via front page in it. 5. I create a new folder in the ESM called Test1 6. I create a virutual directory to the folder on the 'M' drive and frontpage enable it. Now all that goes fine. I am logging into the frontpage folder as the 'system administrator' and I can create my application without issue! The problem I have is when I go an edit anything. Yes, Edit! I can create and delete without issue. I cannot edit or modify anything as I dont have permissions? So I go to the ESM and look in that store and I look for the permissions and I grant my 'System Administrator' account full access under 'Client Permissions'. Now I go back and again, I can create and delete, but not modify. Where am I going wrong with this one? Timothy H. Once the Active Directory Connector is ran and mailboxes are moved over from 5.5 to 2003 and you decommission the 5.5, should you redirect your DNS to the new mail server?

I read in one of the Q articles that you just change the IP address of the
new server to that of the old. That's what I plan to do. I've got NATs and
all that other stuff pointing to the existing IP address. One change and it
all should work. The article did say something about flushing the DNS caches
and that there might be some intial name resolution issues until it all gets
propagated out.
