    - Exchange Security and Administration: Small/Tiny Site I've been using Exchange for the last seven years to maintain calendars, contacts, etc. on my home LAN. However, I've never used it to handle email, out of a fear that it was not "inherently" secure enough to expose it to the wilds of the internet without more sysadmin experience than I have. Instead, I handle my email with postfix on a linux box, and restrict external access to the pop3 server to secure stunnel connections. On the Windows side, I currently run Exchange 2003 on a Server 2003 platform behind the firewall. I recently ordered the installation of the same environment for the startup company I work at, however, and was pretty impressed by the ability of Exchange 2003 to interact with Outlook over http. This has caused me to want to rethink my "don't expose Exchange" decision. How hard is it to keep Exchange secure, in practice? I am diligent about applying patches and security fixes to all my Windows software, and I don't mind investing time hardening systems. But I don't want to have to be in the trenches administering security for Exchange on a weekly basis. Are there security risks related to Exchange's http connector? Advice, perspective and pointers to resources would be appreciated. On a more technical note, is setting up Exchange to use the http connector difficult? Does it require that all http traffic be handled by the Windows Server Exchange is running on?     - Cannot install While trying to install another exchange box I get the following error message. "Setup has detected that at least one front-end server in this Admistrative Group is running an older of Exchange. You must upgrade all front-end servers in an Administrative Group before you can upgrade or install a new back-end server. The following front-end servers have not been upgrades." and it gives the name of the server. Should Exchange 2000 and 2003 be able to co exist? IIS Virtual Di I am install Exchagne 2007 SP1 on a freshly installed Windows 2008 Std box and I keep getting the error "an error occured while creating the IIS virtual directory IIS://servername/W3SVC/1/ROOT/OWA Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.WEb.Administration, Version 7.0.0.0. Culture=neutral............" I have reinstall IIS on the server and tried reinstalling exchange and still get the same thing. I followed the prereq install doc on technet. Anybody have any ideas?     - SSL an SMTP on Exchange 2003 I have an Exchange 2003 Server and want to have the ability to send out email on port 465 through an SSL connection. I have created another SMTP Virtual Server and changed the port to 465. I have a SSL certificate that I have setup under the Access Tab and secure communications. The certificate is working, I have Require security channel selected with 128-bit encryption. Under Authentication I have unchecked Anonymous access and have Basic authentication with requires TLS and Integrated Windows Authentication checked. When I try to send out a message using SSL it tell me that the server does not support the connection encryption type, but if I use TLS it works without an issue.     - External Exchange 2003 Server access without using POP3 I have an Exchange 2003 Server and was wondering if I could access the server at an external location without setting up or connecting through a VPN or setting up POP3 access. The results that I am looking for is that I can click on my Outlook setup and configure the Exchange option like I do in the office but use my external IP Address or my published domain name mail.mydomain.com. I know that Entourage for the Mac will use the Outlook Web Access info to connect to the server, this would also be fine by me but isn't an option in Outlook 2007 for the PC. I have full access to the firewall settings and also wanted to make sure that it is secure. I do have OWA configured with a SSL connection and certificate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.     - Getting POP3 Access to Exchange 2003 I have Exchange Server 2003 and needed to have the ability to access it for an external location. What I want to achieve is to have the users in the office stay connected through the Exchange Server settings in Outlook. For a small number of users that are out of the office (5 - 10 users) I want to have the ability to access and download their mail using POP3 settings. I know that I would have to open port 110 and direct that to the server. The settings that I am wondering about are within the Exchange manager, if there is a simple link to some instructions, I welcome that. The second part of the question is that I want to just add a second domain name to the same server, and have it accept mail for this domain name, but add the new domain in the user accounts manually, meaning I don't want it to be a default setting when I create a new user account. In the past we had a Exchange but was chaged by Lotus Notes (corporate decision) Now I want install Exchange 2007 but when I try to prepare the domain I receive a message about that exchange is in a mixed mode but i don't have any exchange now in my company!     - Exchange 2003 installation issue: Exchange Tasks not on users in AD All, I am installing Exchange 2003 on a Windows 2003 AD network. It is a very simple network: 1 DC, 2 other member servers. The mail server is running windows 2003 as a member server (not DC). I installed and everything seemed to go fine. I followed the checklist...ran forestprep and domainprep. Installed Exchange, and it is there, services loaded and apparently ready to go. When I go into my active directory, however, there is not 'Exchange Tasks' selection on the users in my admin tool. I have no idea why not...I have not seem this before and have performed quite a few installations over the years of 2003 and 2000. Does anyone know if there is a way to make my user profiles have the Exchange Tasks menu option? If not...I cannot add e-mail address or even make them mail enabled. Also...I considered uninstalling Exchange 2003 and re-installing, just to make sure everything happens as it should. I cannot uninstall because it tells me that there are mail-enabled users connected, and that I either have to move them or un-mail-enable them. When I look at the IS, there are three mailboxes, and none of them are my users, they are the Exchange system accounts that I would expect to be there. So...if the option is uninstall and reinstall...does anyone know how to uninstall exchange when it is telling me that there are users that are mail enabled that I cannot get to to move or un-enable?     - Connectivity to Exchange Server I have a new installation of SBS 2003. Everything seemed to install normally but I have several issues. 1. I have had to post to this group from another computer because I can't get to the newsgroups from the server's IE. Microsoft requires Java to sign in, Java requires an ActiveX control to download and IE won't allow it. Can't find any way to allow it. 2. I cannot ping my server or connect to exchange with Outlook. I can log in to Exchange via a web browser using the server's IP or DNS name from inside or outside the LAN. I would have thought that the ability to connect to Exchange with Outlook would have come right out of the box with little or no configuration changes needed on a new SBS installation.     - Problem installing E2K7SP1EN32.exe I am trying to install the 32 bit version management tools only on windows 2003 SP2 machine which is a member of the domain where exchange 2007 reside. Everytime i run the executable, i am getting an error "windows cannot access the specified device, path, file..." and it has something to do with permission? I installed this to an xp machine and no problem at all. I have read a similar issue and the recommendation is to uninstall the IE enhanced security, but it did not work.     - sending forwards through pop3 we have a very small bussiness with exchange 2003 on sbs 2003. the exchange server is only for shared contacts and calendar. each user (only 3 users) has outlook 2003 with an exchange account and a pop3 account set up as default. when we try to forward an email from "sent items" on a local pst, it uses the exchange account by default. why, and how can i change this ?     - Exchange 2003 on SBS 2003 Standard problems Ok So i have installed SBS standard and Exchange standard. Here is the setup bprecycling.co.uk points to 89.248.130.***, so then it goes from the static ip to the linksys router which is 192.168.1.11 and the DMZ to 192.168.1.2 the exchange server. if you goto http://mail.bprecycling.co.uk you will see that part works, now the internal domain is bprecycling.local and the mail domain is bprecycling.co.uk. after running the sbs 2003 email setup the mail is still not recieving but is sending except to domains like hotmail which is a pain. What im trying to work out is whats the best way to get this working properly, also i have mailbox's that have recieved mail but stored it and not passed it to the domain user.     - Exchange install failed Installing the first node of the Active-Passive Exchange cluster failed with an error that the computer account for the Exchange virtual server could not be created in the domain. Looking at the event log I see an error that the Cluster resource did not have permissions in the domain to create the virtual server computer in the Computers OU. The Virtual server was created in failover cluster manager (this is 2008), but I could not bring it online. I then created an account and as the event log suggested I gave the cluster resource full control over the virtual server computer account in AD. This allowed me to bring it online. But I have no database, and who knows what else was not installed. Where is it listed that it is a requirement for the cluster resource computer object to have these permissions? Did I miss something. I have read so much documentation. Now I am left with a system in who knows what state. Is there any way out of this, other than starting from scratch? Thanks for any input?     - Installation of Remote AD Management Tools (RSAT-ADDS) after IIS From the Exchange Team Blog: "If the AD management tools are not installed prior to installation of IIS 7 components, there are potential issues with IIS 7 configuration that can crop up as a result, hence the recommendation for a reboot." Unfortunately for our Hub/CAS servers (mailbox are a separate cluster) I saw this too late. So I installed Powershell and all the IIS 7.0 prereqs, rebooted numerous times doing other things, then installed Exchange 2007 in the HUB/CAS roles. What kind of problems will we see if we now install the Remote AD Management tools? Are the issues above just pertaining to if you install IIS7 first and then the remote AD tools without a reboot?     - Multiple Domains and Calendar Sharing HI Everyone, Working in the Windows 2003 Standard Server with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 Environment. We have two domains, xxx.com which is the domain the server resides in and is the primary domain. We obtained another company, yyy.com which is a domain the mail server (single mail server) accepts mail for and allows the users to connection from the yyy.com domain via SMTP accounts. We share calendars within the xxx.com domain with no problems. Users in the yyy.com domain want to utilize calendar sharing through exchange. My question is this. I want to set this up for them, allowing them full range of the exchange features. Can this be done with just one server or does a second server in their domain need to be configured? We are a small company of architects and it seemed the best way of having project email that everyone can easily read and add to. With Exchange 2007 microsoft are moving away from public folders but I am keen to find out how companies manage project emails that more than one person needs access to. How do large companies manage critical emails that need to be stored for contractural reasons? We have recently merged with another company and they have email archiving to a sql database as a bolt on to outlook. Mailboxes are limited to 50MB and they archive the email into this database which can be searched. I did a reinstall of exchange on a new box exactly like the old box with the /disasterrecovery switch.     - Exchange mail on two machines. I have a SBS for small business and an exchange server. I have local client computers connected to the exchange server to download email. I have recently setup a VPN to allow mobile users to connect to our server so they can access local files/mailboxes. Once setting up the remote PC's exchange account, it proceeded to download emails. But at the same time i noticed that my local computers' emails were deleting themselves 1 by 1 as they were downloaded to the remote computer. (will normal User account will do?) and may i know what is Exchange Server Deployment tool? this "deployment tool" is for After Exchange Server Installation? or Before? because in Exchange Server Deployemnt tool, there are lots of prerequisites like DCDiag and NetDiag which when i dunno how to run it, and ForestPrep and DomainPrep as well. Currently in this company, we are still using Lotus Notes, and the company director want us to change to Exchange Server. but right now, we are still using Lotus Notes for daily email, while i try to join this Exchange to the domain.     - Exchange 2000 Decommision Help I have installed a new Exchange 2007 server in a single domain, and have moved all of my user mailboxes to the new server. I've setup all the connectors (no edge server) and all is working just fine. When I shut down my old Exchange 2000 server many of my users can no longer access folders of users they have delegate access to (i'm assuming this is for all users but only a hand full ahve called my help desk).     - cannot remove old exchange database the original environment was (2) exchange 2003 servers the 1st held all of the mailboxes. the second server was a replica of the first using a product called doubletake. doubletake creates replicas of all of the mail stores and storage groups. I have been removing the databases from the mailbox server as I move users to the new exchange 2007 server. the stores are all gone now except for the public folders ( they will go soon). my problem is that on the replica server, it will not allow me to remove one of the databases as it thinks that there are mailboxes there. I have used http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279220 and http://support.microsoft.com/?id=279202 I was able to get method 5 of this article to return 4 system mailboxes (one for each mail store I assume). If there is no other way to find and remove these mailboxes, then is there a proper way to clean up AD? since we are moving to exchange 2007, I would need to clean up everything under the administrative group.     - specific emails being lost in cache mode - follow up This is a follow up to a problem I had last year and I know there were several other people posting with similar odd losses of specific large attachments in cache mode. I finally found the problem during building renovations. It turns out the network link to the computer ran through an undocumented switch and Cat-3 cable in part of the route. Once the network staff connected it over to the Cat-6 system it was supposed to be on, the loss of scanner attachment files in cache mode stopped. **************************************************************** Original problem statement I've one user that receives documents from a copier/scanner. The documents come in an email and are downloaded from the scanner server via a pop connection in the Outlook client. These emails vanish if the client is configured in local cache mode. Since they are scans, it take a while to download and I can see it happening in the progress box; it also disappears off the scanner server. I have no control over the scanner, it's maintained by a different department. I've been able to determine so far: The emails from the same scanner reach other users and can be forwarded to the problem account without loss. The other Outlook clients are using exchange/outlook in the local cache mode. The Outlook pop connections to other email systems function normally and no mail loss has been seen in several months of operation since the exchange account was established. The problem existed from the first time the user tried to retrieve a scanned document but did not bother to inform me until a crisis point was reached several months later. I cannot send mail from the Mailbox server to the combined CAS/Hub
transport server. I just set up a test environment on VMware with
Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008. Mail is stuck in Outlook Outbox with no
errors. If I place the CAS/Hub tansport and Mailbox role on one
server, it works.

Cannot see any obvious issues

Can someone advise?

No errors in the HUB servers event log and all services runing?
No network problems between the servers?
AD site with the IP subnet created?
