Upgrading to win2K3 and Exchange 2000
I am getting ready to migrate two servers to Windows 2003 from windows NT
4.0. One server has exchange 5.5.
First, does anyone have a microsoft project plan for a migration of this
size? Microsoft's sample plan is for a project that is over a year long.
Is there a good white paper for a migration like this or does anyone have
any suggestions to make the installation work best?
I plan to reformat my server and load a fresh copy of windows on the two
servers. Should I do the process using a spare temporary server or should I
do everything from backup?
Thanks,

Exchange SMTP Receive e-mail
We just installed an Exchange 2k3 server, in a new forest.
We setup 15 user accounts, and modified our DNS to point
to the new server. Internally of course, we can send mail
to each other fine. Externally, we do not seem to receive
any mail. I have the forward unknown receiptients tab
enabled and pointing to our old server. I can telnet to
the smtp port, and do get the legitimate connection
information. Also , smtp logging is on, and I do see
various servers connecting to us. Is there something I'm
missing ? ( When I send an e-mail from outside the domain,
with delivery recipt enabled, i get a delivery receipt) ?
Please help. Thanks

Exch. 2003 services won't start at boot-up due to MSExchangeDSAccess failure
We installed Exchange 2003 on a clean installation of
Windows Server 2003. At first it worked, but during
successive restarts the MSExchangeDSAccess process failed
(event id 2104), causing the failure of the Exchange
System Attendant service startup, in turn causing the
other Exchange services to fail to start up. Microsoft
reports that this error is caused by the DsGetDcName
function, when "a call to DsGetDcName is made before the
Microsoft Exchange Management Service is fully
initialized. DsGetDcName is a Windows Application
Programming Interface (API) function that returns the name
of the domain controller."
However, the document referenced above (Q322837) does not
describe any fix for this in Server 2003. Help? Tag: OWA Tag: 103338
Exchange 2003 cluster
Hi to all.
I have to test Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition on
a Windows Server 2003 cluster.
In the testing environment I have no shared storage
available, so I setup a cluster with a single node (as Win
2003 allow).
The problem come when (following the steps suggested in
the "Exchange Server 2003 Deployment Guide") I create a
Phisical Disk resource type for the first Exchange virtual
server: the wizard does not find any supported HW. I try
a "Majority node Set" to take the place of phisical disk,
but it does not function at all.
Probably it is not possible running Exchange on a majority
node set cluster... have you any ideas or can you confirm
that's impossible?
Thanks in advance for any reply.

OWA Title change [re-post]
I had this posted a while back, but it's since been
burried in the flow of posts.
Does anyone know how to change the title bar on Outlook
Web Access to reflect something other than "Microsoft
Outlook Web Access"? I'd like to put the name of my site
in there and I cannot locate anything with the <title>
tag in my server's installation directory. I am running

ADC Tools / Connection Agreement Wizard
Hello,
Small 40 user environment, mostly Windows 2000.
We have a healthy Exchange 5.5 server running on 2K and
I'm installing a separate Exchange 2003 server. I'm at
the point where I'm in the ADC services and have run all
the steps. After running step #4 (Connection Agreement
Wizard) and Verify, the log lists the following error
message and I don't know what to do about it.
"Warning: The Exchange 5.5 directory still contains
objects that are not replicated to Active Directory. If
you have just run Connection Agreement Wizard, allow time
for directory replication to complete, and then rerun the
verification task in Step 4. Otherwise, run the
Connection Agreement Wizard."
Prior to this message, the report lists 14 user entries
that say they are "matched". Why does the report tell me
this? I haven't the foggiest clue and I don't know if
those 14 entries are bad or good. They all look fine to
me and all the accounts are working. I don't know if this
is a showstopper or not. Here is an example of
the "matched" messages:
"Matched 'cn=UserA,cn=Recipients,ou=THISDOMAIN,o=THIS
DOMAIN' to 'CN=User's Name,OU=Users,DC=domainname,DC=com'
based on SID."
Can anyone shed light on the above WARNING or
this "matched" entry? I don't want to procede and do
anything damaging to my existing 5.5 ADC.

upgrade 5.5 to 2k
Hi,
When i ry to upgrade to exchage 2k i get this error :
The component "Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services"
cannot be assigned the action "Upgrade" because:
- Setup has detected that the Organization name of the Exchange Site you
are currently trying to join or upgrade does not match the Exchange
Organization found in the Active Directory. To fix this, you may use the

ADC and Exchange 5.5 sites connected via IMC
We are in the process of planning a migration from Exchange 5.5 SP4 to
Exchange 2003. We have 4 different sites all in the same organization. In
our primary corporate site we have 6 Exchange 5.5 servers, in a Win2k3
domain running in mixed-mode, that are connected to the other three sites
via our Internet connection using site connections over IMS. So we
replicate all folder and mailbox info between these remote sites, over the
IMS connector, but do not have access to edit the mailbox properties or
administer directly from our corporate site as there is no NT authentication
between the sites. My question is this:
I see that the ADC will read our complete directory from the local 5.5
server but how can or will it be able to sync with the mailboxes that are in
remote sites. Obviously the ADC won't be able to write to attribute 10 or
read the NT Account file as that will always display "\unknown account". Is
it possible to just create a one-way connection agreement that will just
read the accounts into AD but not try to write back?
Second question:
If I can't use the ADC to sync up with the current organization. What are
my options to deploy Exchange 2003 and still have message integration with
the existing 5.5 site?
Thank you,

Internet Email
A customer has recently added an Exchange 5.5 server to their network to
allow for internal email. This is working great, but since adding the
server, they are unable to SEND internet email (still able to receive it
however). Client software is Outlook 2000. I'm far from being an expert on
Exchange and most of my experience in on 2k, but feel that this is something
that I should be able to handle. So, what do I need to adjust to fix this?
(something like SMTP forwarding?)

Migrating from Exchange 5.5 multiple sites to single Exhange 2003 site
Hello,
I've recently been assigned a project to migrate a small Windows NT
4.0 domain with several Exchange 5.5 sites into a Windows 2003 domain
and consolidate the Exhange 5.5 servers into a single Exchange 2003
server.
My question is: Is it possible to have 3 Exchange 5.5 sites, install
Exchange 2003 in 1 of those sites, and migrate mailboxes to that new
server from all 3 sites?
Thank you very much for any feedback or information.

Moving Exchange from NT4 to 2000
I currently have one production 5.5 server (not a PDC or
BDC) in an NT4 Domain. I would like to install another 5.5
server in my 2000 AD Domain and add it to the current
organization and site setup on the NT4 5.5 server. Then
move all the mailboxes and rehome all the public folders
to the new 5.5 server in the 2000 domain. Is this
possible? I've done this several times with 5.0 and 5.5
within the same domain and everything is a breeze. The
cross-domain issue is the real problem. I get conflicting
information from everything I read.
Additional info:
*I plan going to Exchange 2000 or 2003 later. Budget
constraints won't allow me for about 9 months to a year.
*The Exchange server is at SP4 and the NT4 server itself
is at SP6.
*I have no other utilities or applications aside from
Exchange 5.5 running on the NT4 server.
*The new 2000 server is a new install at SP2.
*All Exchange users are in the 2000 domain. About 630
mailboxes and 450 Public folders on the NT4 5.5 server.
*All trusts between the NT4 domain and 2000 domain are
functioning.
*Currently there are no errors or problems with the NT4
5.5 server. I just want to dump the NT4 domain. Tag: OWA Tag: 103270

Restoring Exchange 2000 from harddisk copy
Hi folks,
Just in time for the weekend, our Exchange Server has died.
In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
Now we are desperately trying to restore our data, which we consciencously
saved unto a tape. Unfortunately, this restore is giving us a great deal of
trouble and following all kinds of advice has still not yielded the desired
results. The data on the drive seems to still be accessible, it seems the
something in the boot sector went sour.
My question: Is there a way in which I can use the database data from the
damaged harddisk to restore exchange unto another server? We have the data
on the hdd, is it good for anything or is the harddisk barely good enough
for the trash can...?
It is late at night here in Vienna, and I am hoping there's someone out
there with better understanding that can help.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Information Store over multiple drives.
My Exchange 5.5 Information Store is reaching the

Recovery Exchange 2000 Public folders?!?!
Hi!
We migrate 2 weeks ago to win 2003 and exchange 2003.
we make an image of the old win 2000 server + exchange 2000.
with that migration we forgot to backup our Public Folder from exchange (the
public folder include
few importanc Contacts (200 .vcf) files).
I can browse the image from the old exchange.
I find out that the public folders are stored in this both files:
pub1.edb
pub1.stm
Now the question: How I can recovery the complete Public folder???

Resolution to viewing Permisions for EventConfig_
Hi,
I came across a problem were i was recieving an error when trying to
review the permissions for the EventConfig_(server)
Error:
The object cannot be found in the directory. This may be because
replication
has not completed.
Microsoft Exchange Directory ID no: c1010aae
To fix this i used the following solution from windows2000faq
http://www.windows2000faq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=20833
Q. We removed a server from our Exchange Server site for maintenance,
then reinstalled it. Now we have two copies of the server's
EventConfig folder in the Events Root public folder. These folders
don't appear in our mail clients; how can we delete one?
A. This situation happens when you completely remove a server from the
site before notice of the server's event folder being deleted is
replicated throughout the site?all the other servers still think the
folder is there, and the original server is no longer around to tell
them otherwise. The fix for this problem is pretty straightforward:
Log on to the problem server using your Exchange Server service
account.
Stop the Microsoft Exchange Event Service.
Run \exchsrvr\bin\events.exe with the /c:serverName switch. This
switch tells the Event Service to clean up its folder list; after you
run the command, the Events Root folder will no longer have two
folders.
Restart the Event Service. You might have to press F5 to force
Microsoft Exchange Administrator to update its folder list.
Hope this helps anyone who has hunted for a solution for this. Tag: OWA Tag: 103252

5.5 Site Setup Issue - Plse Help
Here is the scenario,
We have a legacy NT4 Server SP5 (now a BDC) with Exch 5.5 SP2
Everything else has been migrated to W2K for a long while and everything
works fine.
The exch 5.5 server has legacy accounting package residing on it that is
holding everything up, they want huge sums of money to update the software
and we are told by the supplier moving the software to another server or
updating the OS or service pack will kill the Accounting Package!!.
So in an effort to finalise our migration I had planned to get 5.5 off of
this old server onto new hardware.
Remember the challenge is keeping the source server untouched throughout the
process!
I went for a new 2000 Server SP4 clean install as a member of the domain.
Everything fine DNS, Wins etc
Tried to install Exch 5.5 as second server in the site but failed due to
service account authentication? I reset the Exchange Service account
password in W2K and re-entered these credentials at the source servers
services console.
The install now commences fine everything installs but 30 seconds or so
after replication commences the install fails with error.
Diagnostics using RPCPING between servers reports everything is fine.
However checking the event log on the target 5.5 server I see a security
login failure the old 5.5 server is trying to log into the new 2k/5.5 server
and fails due to unknown user or password!.
I have elevated the exchange service account log in to Domain Admin level
and I can use these credentials to log in anywhere on the 2k domain with
Admin rights....
Im suspecting that the old NT4/5.5 service pack combination is the problem,
exactly what we were trying to avoid changing.
If Im ever going to move on and finalise this project I need to rid myself
of this last legacy device.
So, Can I get Exch 5.5 to install on a 2000 member server in a 2000 mixed
mode domain or does it have to be a DC to succeed (I have run DC Promo and
still get the same results).
Does the source NT4/5.5 server have to be ExchSP3 to work with new 2K/5.5
partner?.
Do I have an NTLM login issue between servers due to Service Pack
differentials?.
