I need to place a long thin form down the left side of the screen - a =
pseudo sidebar containing buttons to fire the favourite options. The =

Eliminating orphans in grouped data
Using VFP9
I have a report with grouped data. There can be anywhere from 1 to 21
detail lines.
Is there any way to eliminate orphans short of insisting on at least 21
times the detail band height + group header height before starting a new
group? This solution will skip to a new page much more often than is
necessary. What I'd like to say is "start a new page if and only if there
isn't enough room on this page to complete the group".

I've been playing with the code and I really think it's a start to
giving VFP GUI apps MT capability at least the equivalent of VB6 which has
some basic MT capability and is similar to VFP as far as Apartment
multi-threading.
Calvin's example actually blocks on the main thread so I redid it
somewhat to avoid that and replaced some commands to make it backward
compatible with earlier VFP versions. Not perfect but I think it's a start.

Renaming a field name
I don't think this can be done in the following scenario, but then I am sure
somebody here has figured it out.
I need to rename a user defined field when the table is not in an exclusive
mode. In the Customer table I have created some user defined fields with
default names (NewField1, NewField2....). I have to allow the user to rename
the field Name, Type, Width etc. Cannot open the customer table in Exclusive
as there may numerous users hitting it at once.
Creating a caption, comments etc on the fly for the field is a no brainier ,
But for reports etc rather than every time one or two of these fields are
need, checking if the caption is blank with
empty(field("fname","tablename",1)) will be a major PIA and a nightmare for
support.
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

show tips property
I have a form with buttons on it which contain tool tips. The form itself
has SHOW TIPS set to TRUE. For some reason, in the program where this form
is used, the tips will not show. When I use the same form in another
program, the tips show perfectly. The command I am
using is:
DO FORM myform
READ EVENTS
What could possibly cause the tips to not display? I don't think the
problem is with the form, because it works correctly when in placed in other
programs.

I am building a standalone ap with vfp9. I want the exe to find a set
of free tables in the directory where it is run from. I know I can
hard code a set of tables into the project. The exe finds them from
where ever it is run. But that file set won't be where the exe
expects to find them after being put in place by a program installer
on a user's machine.
My thought was that there would be a way for the program to tell
itself where it is (like app.path in vb). I have found home() and a
set of sys() functions that provide a lot of paths, but, as far as I
can tell, none of them will tell the program what directory it was
started from. Yes, the program can find the Windows current
directory, but that won't necessarily be the same thing.
Is there a way to for a vfp exe to find out where it is?

I've never run into this before, perhaps because I almost never have a
reason to issue an explicit lock. (This is VFP8.)
* Process 1:

of Language Support Files that will translate the software for the end

Combo box in grid display problem
I've got a combobox in a grid. The combobox.rowsource has 2 fields; a
display name (30 character field) and a primary key value (5 character
field). The BoundColumn property is set to 2. The column's sparse property
is .f. When the form starts up everythings cool, the grid colum displays the
full display name. However when I click on the grid the column only displays
the 1st 5 characters of the display name.
Any ideas what I've got set wrong? Thanks in advance for any help.

The has happened just since the size of the table has gone over 1Gig
(# records only in millions) and with a CDX file of 1/2 Gig (no FPT)
I seem to recall something in earlier versions about size limit of 1 Gig

Method corruption - vfp9!
I think Microsoft is slowly but surely getting a handle on this. VFP6 was
notorious about this, VFP7 better, VFP8 good. This is the first time I've
seen it with VFP9. As with every previous version, the method code was
corrupted. In this case, not only was the method code corrupted, but the
form could not be saved. Both at once! That is new, usually it was one or
the other, this is the first time I've seen them both happen at once.

System menu bar not updating
My application uses the main foxpro screen as the main screen, I have
customized the system menu and have mdi child windows that spawn within
the main window.
There is a toolbar that is docked at position 0 (top).
When the child windows are maximized, the system menu bar changes
properly to display the minimize, normalize and maximize icons on the
far right side. Normal behaviour is for these icons to disappear if the
window is normalized or minimized.
I have trapped the _screen resize event with a bindevent() procedure,
in which i resize multiple objects in the application including other
toolbars in dock positions 1 and 3. Things still function normally
when this happens.
However, if i attempt to resize objects(specifically a pageframe)
within the toolbar docked at position 0 in this bindevent() procedure,
in the same manner as the toolbars docked at positions 1 and 3, the
system menu no longer functions properly. When the child windows are
minimized or normalized, the minimize, normalize and maximize icons in
the system menu bar are NOT disappearing. And when they are clicked
the application crashes.
Another weird thing is that before I got to this point, the only way
that I could resize this toolbar at all was to hide it before resizing
and then show it again, otherwise the application crashed.
Specifically the line of code, that if removed the system menu bar
functions normally is:

To build an index of a Table, the table must be opened exclusive
I have a table (in shared mode) in a grid, and i want to build a new index.
Therefore I close the table, open it exclusive, do the indexing and open the
table again in shared mode.
Then I set the recordsource-property of the grid new - and get a programm
abort and a message, that the error can be reported to Microsoft.

Hi,
Using VFP 9.0 here and I'm getting ready to distribute version 1.0 of my
little application. I've compiled the program into a .exe and when I run it
I see that my main form is inside a Visual Fox Pro window.
Two questions:
1) What do I have to do to make it so that when I click the red-x on the VFP
window it exits my application? Right now I get a message that reads,
"Cannot quit Visual FoxPro". If I click the red-x on my main form it exits
the application.
2) Isn't there a way to make my form the main form of the program? Right
now it's just floating inside the VFP application window. I'd like it to
look integrated. I've played around with Show Window and Desktop properties
but they don't do what I'm looking for.
I'm guessing it has something to do with the _screen object but haven't
figured it out yet.

VFP9: Sending table VIA FTP
Hello,
This sounds like a stupid question, but I can't figure out how to maintain
long field names in a table when I COPY TO upload FOR conditions. I send
this copied table VIA FTP to another machine, which appends back into the
same table structure as the copy originated from. How do I send a copied
DBC to maintain those long field names, or is there another method for doing
the same thing without having to send a DBC?

Have VFP9 now, and well, just how do you use Report Listener?
Here's what I'm trying to accomplish...
I have several reports that make up a "final report" that is sent to our
customers. I've gotten the system to the point that I can "print" several
reports at a time(without report listener) but I want to be able to run all
of them to a pdf file. I currently do this individually using FRX2Any.app
specifically for PDF files. If I try to run my multiple report routine
using FRX2Any right now, I get all kinds of garbage... Can anyone help me
get this running properly?
To run the multiple reports, I select all the data I need for all reports
into a single dbf/cursor, then just print the report(s) from there,
basically stepping through the dbf.

Current software is developed in FPD 2.6 & supports only Dot matrix
printing.
We are planning to develop new version in VFP & give only Windows printing &
data capture in VFP.
Can we open VFP tables/dbfs in FPD 2.6 & print using FPD for dot matrix
printing support ?
In networked evn. ( multi-user ) some users might open the software using
VFP while others might open the software using FPD. Will there be any
problems ?

report long text problem
hi all,
I have a problem with a field in a report.
This field is in the group footer and it is a note that comes from a Memo
field.
If this note override in length (many lines of text) the first page (summing
the detail rows)
i got a report with a second page blank , the last rows are missing and the
page footer data
are only in the first page.
I tried to change the memo to char and no difference.
It seems like that the Report Designer cannot handle field with more then
one line of text that causes the report to print a second page...
It seems very strange to me that no one has had this situation thus this
problem.
Any idea about that?

How to implement Local Google Desktop Search
My customer is local radio station and he works with a huge of DOC
documents for news, reports, ... He has Google Desktop instaled.
Till now when he want to find specific text in these documents he used
Local Google Search in web browser. This is very tedious. He came to
idea that this task can be done in my application : he would enter
search text in TextBox, click the search CommandButton and get the
list of documents ( which contains searching text ) with pathes and
file names in Grid or ListBox.
And now my question. Is there exist something like this :

BufferMode Testing
Hi FoxPro Gurus,
Am doing testing. Had 2 same forms which using same table running at the same
time:
- Updation on Form A, after pressing "TableUpdate button", records updated
in Form A.
- Updation effective in Form B only if pressing "TableUpdate Button /
TableRevert Button", then will
automatically jumped to the most Updated record.
- If did not press "TableUpdate/TableRevert Button", the program skipped
the updated record and shown
the next current record.
*Basically behind the "TableUpdate Button" is coded "tableupdate()"
"TableRevert Button" is coded "tablerevert()"
*Had set the buffermode in the form to "2 Optimistic"
Below are a few of my doubts:
1. What/why is the reason causing this problem?
2. How can i avoid this issue?
3. What is this to do with record locking/unlock?
4. Is there any better way to do this in a multi-user environment?

VFP8 and servlets
I wrote a servlet which resides on my local OC4J server that connects to an
Oracle database and insert records into a table.
In VFP8, I use CREATEOBJECT("Msxml2.XMLHTTP.4.0") to make the connection to
the OC4J server. I use the OPEN() and SEND() methods of the xml object to
pass my INSERT command. Currently, within a VFP SCAN I build an INSERT
statement and use the OPEN() and SEND() methods one record at a time.
Through the SEND() method, I am sending 65313 records, but only 999 records
get inserted into my targeted Oracle table. I believe all 65313 records
should be INSERTed (I am able to INSERT all the records through an ODBC
session). I am wondering if anyone might have used VFP to connect to a
servlet to INSERT records to a remote table and can share an example of their
code. I suspect that I have a memory leak in my servlet, but Iâ??m wondering
if my VFP approach is correct. Am I using the correct object to connect to
my servlet? I eventually want to send (not sure how to do that at the
moment) an array set of values and loop through it in the servlet. For now,
I am testing the connection and seeing if I can INSERT all records one record
at a time into a remote table.

form release very long
I have a problem with one form -contains pageframe(9 pages) and a lot
of elements (grid, listbox, combo, etc.)
I do NOT have any code in QueryUnload, Unload, Release but when i try
to close this form MousePointer is changed to HourGlass and it's about
one minute when form is closed.
On the other computer everything is working fine.
Any ideas whas is the problem ?
I'm using VFP 9
I already try to set grid.recordSource='' before release but it doesn't
help....

I am starting to code my own non-visual classes using the custom base class.
I would like to have a private data session for the object just like forms
have. If you create an object based on custom, how do you add a private data
session?
Once you've done it (assuming its possible), what event do you put the code
in to USE the tables that you need?
Is there a better base class to use other than custom for non-visual classes
that need a private data session?

We have a new w2003 sever. xp. We have copied our vfp8 data,sourcecode to
the new server. They won't run. What did we forget to do for the .exe to
know to run with vfp8? I don't even see it in the list for to run with.

Trying to use Run (!) command in Fox DOS
Trying to use the run command from a Fox 2.6 to run a batch file. all
that we get is a flash of the DOS window when trying to run a pdf
conversion utility.
The calling program runs an nprint command which has been replaced with
a batch file of the same name. The source code cannot be changed so we
are trying to fool it.
If a pause is placed in the batch file before the call to the pdf
utility it stops correctly.
if a pause is placed after the batch file call to the pdf utility all
you get is a quick flash of a dos window and nothing happens.

Modify a view progmatically. VFP 8.0
How do a change a view in code? I've tried modify view, but in the compiled
version, VFP returns "feature not available". I have a view on a client
computer that needs one field added. I can do this using a table with
ALTER, but not for a view.

Run-Time Files
I have successfully loaded the run time files onto my users system.
However when they load the app, the main foxpro window that the forms
and program itself are loaded into does not open in the maximized state
causing the main form to be cut off until the end user maximized the
foxpro window. I have my actual forms defaulted to maximize but how
do I set the main runtime application window from to start off

VFP9 contains many new possibilities in the report designer. ;-)
I'm searching for this one : having one target alias (like in previous
versions) but with different details bands. Just like the possibility to fix
a "print when" value on each detail bands but for the same target alias.
