I have a client with our compiled VFP8 SP1 application (one of many) who is
having freezing problems on a number of machines at their site.

Many other sites that we have have no problem.

I have done the usual bit with anti virus, reinstalling the latest VFP
patches, uninstalling an reinstalling our software etc. but they continue
to freeze up the computer regularly.

Any ideas on what I can suggest to them next?

Cheers

When does it freeze? What is cpu utilisation when it freezes? Is it in the
same place in the program, or random? Are the machines all the same? What
OS? What hardware? What video card, what video driver?

Hi David:

Does the problem occur if you boot in Safe Mode (VGA video driver)? What
OS are they running on? Have you tried recreating for scratch any indexes
their tables are using?

Does the problem office when printing with HP or other laser printers? If
so, look at this article:

I hope this helps.

I used to see this problem with the really cheap clients who would buy the
"fringe", home built computers, rather than spending a couple of extra bucks
for reliable name brand computers. I can't understand how they justify
taking the risk of untested configurations to run their businesses?

I expect that they do not and do not even see the problem.

They usually blame the application instead of the crap computers they are
using. I've seen that happen too many times.

No doubt.

We had a brand new customer cursing at us because our software wouldn't run
for them. When we had them install it standalone it ran fine, so they
finally started being a little more forthcoming and cooperative about their
environment.

Turns out, they were in the process of merging their network (Novell) with a
company they'd just acquired (also Novell), and were running two NDS trees
in parallel. Some users had different Windows and Netware login names, and
they weren't just exactly sure *what* they were logged into. <g> To make
matters worse, they were trying to run our app in one context with the data
stored in the other.

Once we got them installed and running in ONE Netware tree, all their
problems evaporated. But this was, of course, OUR problem to solve until we
could prove to them it wasn't.

Dan

You said you checked for viruses, but what about spyware, adware. Antivirus
programs don't check that type of stuff and I've had a case where it was
just that that was causing a problem.
