I posted in a xp newsgroup, but did not get an answer.

I have a Visual Foxpro Application that reads a text file and stores the
data in a table.
The text file is created using a PDT (Portable Data Terminal). I use the
software that came with the PDT to drag the text file from a PDT window
(from within
the PDT software) to a folder called c:\mobile. It works great on my test
computers (both are
Windows XP Home Edition....arghhh don't ask why!). Anyway on my client
computer, which is a Windows XP Professional, I cannot drag the file. I can
only drag it to the Recylce Bin. I think I have checked properly any rights
for the c:\mobile folder and they are set to "read, write, etc....all rights
are check". However, windows will not allow me to drag the file. What
setting am I missing? I opened and saved a wordpad document in the
C:\mobile
folder so I do have rights.
Thanks, John.

Sounds to me like the software that enables the drag/drop (the PDT software)
is missing from your client's computer.

If those files exist on disk, why not use Windows Explorer?

Dan,
The PDT runs DOS applications that are generated using Windows APP software,
but the software that communicates with the PDT runs on Windows and is
Windows based. When I run this software a standard windows explorer
interface opens and you can drag the text file on the PDT to any windows
folder. It works on my test computers. I'm not sure what you mean the
software is missing...It was installed on the client computer (XP Pro) and
runs perfectly...except I cannot drag a file from it to c:\mobile. However,
I can drag to the recycle bin on the clients computer. Maybe it is a
problem with the PDT windows application softare instead of user rights
issue? I'll check. If anyone has any other ideas, thanks! John.

Ah, it becomes clearer. Not.

I'm so completely confused I'm not sure what's going on.

Does the file you want to drag and drop exist in Windows Explorer? If so,
it's a permissions issue. Or the file may be open by another app, which may
hinder copying.

I have no idea what you mean by "runs DOS applications that are generated
using Windows APP software". What is Windows APP software? Never heard of
it, and how does it come into play in a file copy?

AppGen Pro is a windows based software package that comes with the PDT. It
always you to develop applications that run on a WDT2200 PDT. The PDT
actucally runs a DOS application. This is beside the point. The other
software is DT Comm and always Windows to comunicate with the WDT 2200 PDT
while it resides in the cradle which is attatched to the computer via USB.
When I open DT Comm it contains a window that is basically a directory of
the files contained on the PDT. From that point, I select the file
(movement.txt) and drag it to c:\mobile in Windows Exlorer. However, it
will not drag in Windows XP Professional, but IT WILL in Windows XP Home
edition. However, on both computers I can drag the file to the Recycle Bin.
So I know drag and drop is enabled and working. I have rights to c:\mobile
on the XP Pro machine because I opened wordpad and saved a file to that
folder. Is this a little clearer? Thanks, John.

Dan, here is a link the the screen (DT Comm)

http://www.johngermanyphotography.com/DTCommScreen1.jpg

As you can see, the files that reside on the PDT are located in the upper
right windows A:. You can easily select a file from this window and drag it
to a folder in the left window. However, it will not work on XP Pro
computer...but will on XP Home computers. I do have rights to write to the
folder in question. My VFP app reads this file (movements containing
barcode and locations codes in a warehouse).

Thanks for your help,
John.

OK...

Well, this problem has absolutely nothing to do with VFP. If you're 100%
certain you have all the necessary rights to do this, I'd contact the maker
of that external program for tech support to find out why this isn't
working.
