#1. Foxpro isn't in the .NET version of Visual Studio. What has it been
replaced with? SQL Server? VB .NET?

#2. Following up on #1: lets say I have a 2 intertwined legacy programs
written in foxpro and mapbasic. Since Foxpro is not (or is it?) being
further developed by MS, I wish to update the legacy progs, possibly
combining them both under one umbrella language, i.e., whatever Foxpro's
replacement is. VB .NET possibly? Anyone have any experience on this front?

Thanks very much for any help!

FoxPro jumped out of the .NET box because the common runtime language would
have meant saying bye-bye to macro expansion as well as other Fox features.
It is available separately, or as part of an MSDN subscription. A public
beta of version 9.0 will be offered shortly.

Fox lives.

Hi Roy,

VB and SQL Server have never "replaced" FoxPro and Visual FoxPro in any
previous versions and they don't do that now. That is not to say that a job
that is done in FoxPro can't be done in VB+SQL Server, but that each
software has its place in the scheme of things and some applications are
more easily developed in one software development tool than the other.

As far as updating the legacy application, no matter whether you use VB+SQL
Server or Visual FoxPro (VFP9 Beta will be available publicly in June)
you're in for a re-write. One criteria for choosing your development
platform and database will be whatever you are most familiar and productive
with.

Hi Roy

The reason VFP opted out of the Visual Studio package was that their
developemnt cycle of new version was hampered.
Microsoft continues releasing new versions. It's now at VFP 8, SP 1, with
quaranteed official MS product support till 2010. The first week in June
VFP 9 will be released in a free public beta. This version should then have
guaranteed MS support till the year 2012. I suppose VFP 10 is on the drawing
board.
Visual FoxPro is sold separately and it is as always packaged with all types
orf MSDN subscriptions.
Good thing you asked here instead of jumping to conclusions <s>.

Thanks for the responses Rush, Cindy, and Anders. They're very much
appreciated.

I'm not just a newbie Foxpro programmer, I'm a newbie programmer, period.
Looks like
it'd make a helluva lot more sense to just retain the existing code (maybe
upgrade it 9.0).
Looks like there's a lot of great information in this ng... expect to find
me lurking around here
more and more often. :)

You did not state which version of FoxPro you are using. This
can make a BIG difference.

If you are using FoxPro 1 or 2, that is FoxPro. Note the lack of
a "Visual" in the name. You might have to rewrite.

If you are using Visual FoxPro version 3, 5, 6, 7, or 8, your
code will run with little, if any, change required.

If you are using VFP 4, you are deluded. <G> (Microsoft, in
their {in|]finite wisdom, skipped having a version four.)

(The above version numbers have various .x values and there are
various service packs, but they are irrelevant to my general point.)
