I think you need to find a SMS gateway first...

Is this any use?
http://www.cellular.co.za/hayesat.htm#SMS%20Command%20Set

I did this *ages* ago in a dos prompt and I seem to remember having to
connect at a pretty low rate, set unusual port parameters (7 data bits, 2
stop or something like that) but it did all work.

I really can't find much information at all about it now, all the search
engines I've tried have big communication company websites at the top of all
the search results.

If you manage it, you can probably save a fair bit of money by directly
accessing the gateway to send SMS, it's another area the mobile companies
completely rip off their customers. Not that I care too much, I refuse to
buy a mobile telephone.

Andrew,

I do not have one either but I thought that was because I am old geezer.
Actually, Neither my wife nor I have not yet been able to cost justify
having a cell phone. I suspect at some point my we will buy cell phones
only because our two daughters will finally convince that we should. My
wife is more cost conscious than I but in this case I have to agree with
her. I worked for a city government a few years ago and we got a special
deal on a cell phone through the police department; however, we never used
it. We didn't renew the service and have resisted the temptation ever
since.

Regards,

Dennis Longfellow
