I just did a fresh install of Windows 2000. Haven't even gotten around
to installing the Windows 2000 service pack update or configuring
Internet access. To access some documentation (which I keep in DBFs) I
decided to install VFP 7.0. I did so, updated it to SP1 (which I had
saved on disk), got everything configured. The installation process
appeared to have proceeded normally after I was prompted to install
necessary Windows Components from the VFP 7 installtion CD. However,
turning on the machine I am prompted to install a component (not
specified), and am asked for a location. It hints that it's looking for
vs_setup.msi, if you poke a bit. This is on the VFP 7.0 installation CD,
which I put in. A process goes on for some ten minutes, and it appears
that a lot of stuff is getting installed, configured (therm bars going
on and on). However, later I get the same thing on subsequent Windows
2000 startups. I decide to uninstall VFP 7.0 and reinstall it. I go to
Add/Remove programs and try to remove it there. I'm informed that
Windows can't find the uninstall file and am asked if I want to remove
the representation of the program in Add/Remove programs. Stupidly, I
agree.

I try to uninstall from the VFP 7 installation CD. The option is right
there: Uninstall MS Visual Foxpro 7. I pick it and a dialog comes up
saying:

Setup has detected that you might not have enough space to install this
product. Do you want to continue?

Yes No

The installation drive has 87 GB free! I can't pick either Yes or No, as
the dialog and the VFP 7 Maintenance screen is completely frozen. My
only option is to end the task. What can I do to fix things? I really
don't want to reformat Windows 2000 again.

It appears that the dialog was waiting for a response from me. Of
course, I couldn't respond. However, something changed at one point and
I chose to uninstall ("Yes"). That appeared to proceed "normally,"
however afterward my installation directory and files appeared to
persist. I put in the installation CD and proceeded to attempt to
install VFP 7 again. The process immediately aborted and I was offered
this logfile explaining the reason for the abort:

[09/18/04,04:06:52] setup.exe: [0] CreateDirectoryLayout problems
creating directory: W:\Apps\Fox\MS Visual Foxpro 7.0
[09/18/04,04:06:52] setup.exe: [2] InstallSetupFiles :

failed in ISetupManager::RunInstallLists
[09/18/04,04:06:57] setup.exe: [2] ISetupManager::RunInstallFromThread()
failed in ISetupManager::RunInstall()
***EndOfSession***

What should I do?

Thanks for any help.

I realize now what's probably the source of the problem, or part of it.
I changed the drive letter for the install drive. I'm temporarily
changing it back, uninstalling and will then rechange my drive letter
and reinstall.

That appears to have been it. The warning that Windows gives you when
you change drive letters was ignored! Well, I wish they'd take the
trouble to leave the literal drive letter out of things, but even
programmers can be lazy. That's my take on this, folks.
