I have a client that is intermittantly getting error 1104 reading data over
a win 2000 network-
An error was returned by the operating system while Visual FoxPro was
attempting to read a file.

Is it reasonable to assume that this is a network problem?

Possible. Can you tell a bit more about the environment? See if this article
helps:

Hi John:

Are you using Terminal Services to connect from the client machines to the
Windows 2000 Server? If so, take a look at this article. If this applies,
you need to get the patch from the Windows support group.

818528 Problems When More Than One User Accesses the Same File Through
Terminal

I hope this helps.

Thanks all
This client is not using Terminal services but I have some other prospective
clients that may - so that is usefull info
- I guess their network is just having a bad day every day!

This has worked for Citrix users and for plain Win2000 as well as for TS.
So it may still be worth investigating.
Usually you will see 1104 errors clustered around times that users logoff
(lunchtime, 5pm etc) where the first user who logs off triggers everyone
e3lse using those files to have the 1104 until they exit/reload the Fox
applicaiton.

If you don't get 1104 clusters like that, look for real network errors.
