Backward compatibility for exactly what do you need?
IOW, FoxPro is extremly backward compatible regarding source
code - for example, quite likely you can compile Fox 2.6 code
to run in VFP9 with no or only a few changes.

On the other hand, an executable compiled in any Fox version will
need the corresponding runtime file(s).
That is Fox2.6 EXEs need foww2600.ESL, Vfp8 SP1 custom.exe
needs Vfp8SP1 runtime, Vfp6SP5 does not likely run well with Vfp6
runtime w/o ServicePack and so on...
