    - Open Excel file in Vista You all helped me in opening a Word file in Vista so it is off the task bar. Now I have tried for a while to open an Excel File using VFP8 and have it up front. I have been trying most tricks with no luck. oWORKBOOK = GETOBJECT("C:\TEST1.XLS") oWORKBOOK.APPLICATION.VISIBLE = .T. oWORKBOOK.WINDOWS[1].ACTIVATE() This does open the file but it always ends up on the taskbar. How do you get it to open up so the user can just start using it and not have to look on the taskbar for it??     - GETENV("CLIENTNAME") Hey guys, we have a WinXP development computer that multiple people connect to (only one at a time) via RDP. I was thinking I could use the GETENV("CLIENTNAME") variable to see who is connected to it, but it seems to return the last user & not the current one connected. For eaxmple, if Bob connected to the computer, then logged off, when I connect to it & look at the CLIENTNAME variable it still says "Bob" istead of "Jerry". Any ideas?     - Form Memory Usage/Release Hi Firstly apologies for a long post, but really stumped. I have an application written in VFP9 SP1, backend SQL Server 2000. This runs on Windows 2003 Terminal Server, and developed on a Windows 2000 PC. We now have problems with memory usage and the dreaded "Visual Foxpro has encountered a problem and needs to close" which happens every now and again. The application allows users to open multiple forms within the _SCREEN environment. When opening and closing one screen, memory usage is OK and stable, i.e. gets allocated and released when viewed in Windows task manager with only miminal increases). However, if a user opens multiple windows (forms), then the memory usage gradually goes up and up. For example (using windows task manager) Form 1 - 15688 K Form 1 & 2 - 18756 K Close Form 2 - 17756 K Open Form 2 - 18992 K Close Form 2 - 18652 K Open Form 2 - 19016 K Close Form 2 - 18624 K So you can see, with continued use with numerous forms, the usage goes up and the application slows down. Following this, I used the Sys(1011) function and got these results: Form 1 - 3930 Form 1 & 2 - 6360 Close Form 2 - 3952 Open Form 2 - 6381 Close Form 2 - 3974 So this goes up as well. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, when a form is released, surley all memory is released and allocated back. So I added a SYS(1104) to make sure but this had no impact on memory in task manager. Anybody got any ideas or pointers? I am using the following code to send a fax via VFP: lo_f = createobject("faxserver.faxserver") lo_f.connect("") lo_d = lo_f.createdocument(ofile) lo_d.faxnumber = alltrim(g_fax) lo_d.send lo_f.disconnect release lo_f However, as soon as this code executes, the modem starts dialing the phone # without checking if there is dialtone or if the line is being used. I have checked my modem properties to make sure the item 'Wait for dialtone before dialing' is checked.     - Unable to send email from VFP Hi, I am trying to send email via VFP. I have tried ASPEMAIL and various other components. In the home machine (running Windows XP SP2), I can successfully send emails via VFP. However, at all the work computers (also runing the same OS), NONE of the email solutions for VFP work. ASPEMAIL times out and the CDO object cannot connect to server. We don't have any firewalls or other packet blocking software running. I was wondering if someone could provide a solution as to why all the emails at work computer are not able to go thru.     - form height weirdness VFP9 SP1 on WinXP Sounds like a bug to me. Comments? Create a form. Set titlebar to 0 (off). Set height to 20. Height is 28; won't go to 20. Set minheight to any value <= 20, even -1 (it's already -1) Set height to 20; works fine. Save form and reopen. Height is no longer 20; can't be set to 20. Repeat ad infinitum.     - Grids - DynamicCurrentControl I am trying to create a grid to work something like this: The grid would have 2 columns. The first column is always a textbox that contains the property name. The second column will allow the user to enter whatever value they wish for each property. I want to swap out the control for this second column from a textbox to a checkbox.     - Grid resizing: 2 questions VFP 8 The following ref a grid that should always be the same size as its resizable container (ie a page or form). 1. Does the grid resize event fire automatically when its container is resized? If not, does the even fire each time any of its size related properties is updated? 2. I'm surprised to find that when I reassign my grid's height along the lines of: mygrid.height = this.height, VFP does not leave enough room for the grid's bottom scroll bar(another, slight adjust (-1) is necessary for the right scrollbar).     - Fetching more records for a grid Hello and thanks in advance for the help... I have a grid control which is based on a small table that is extracted from a larger table. When the user scrolls to the last row, I would like to be able to requery and show the next (or previous if the user scroll up from the first record) batch of records. How do you detect all of the various method (Keyboard, Scroll Bars, Etc.) that the user might be using to scroll up from the top or down from the bottom.     - Which is faster - COPY FILE or XXCopy? I'm rewriting a routine in VFP8 (XP Pro) to back up about 4,000 small files, averaqing about 5k each, from about 5 folders from the hard disk to a USB mini hard drive. I'm considering two approaches: 1. Using XXCopy.exe with the RUN command or ShellExedute. 2. Using only the built-in COPY FILE command. I have a feeling XXCopy would be faster, but I haven't tested it. Could someone confirm that? Or is it an "it depends" situation in which case I'll go ahead and test it. Thanks for any help. Steve M. VB can open files as binaries and the convert it to unicode to displayed in an editbox which can show characters of any language The code is this: Open ComDlg.FileName For Binary Access Read As 1 MainTxtBox.Text = StrConv(InputB$(LOF(1), 1), vbUnicode) Close #1 I could find equivalents for VFP.     - Open Word file in Vista I have another problem with an application that runs OK in XP, 98, and 95 but not Vista. I open a Word.doc file from a command button in a form as below in XP, 98, or 95 and the Word doc file opens and displays on the screen so the user can enter a letter in Word. When I use the same file in Vista it pops up on the task bar and the user has to click on the task bar to open the file up. oWORD = GetObject(MYLOCATION+'\'+'C_FILE_NUM+'.DOC') WITH oWORD .APPLICATION.WindowState = 1 .APPLICATION.VISIBLE = .T. ENDWITH No problem staring up Word with the document but it always ends up on the task bar when run in Vista.     - RUN xcopy COMMAND IN VISTA I have been using the RUN xcopy in an application using variables with no problem until I installed it in a Vista Operating system. from = "C:\PFILES\*.*" to = "C:\BACKUP" RUN XCOPY &FROM &TO &&This works OK in XP or 98 but not in VISTA This will run in VISTA RUN XCOPY "C:\PFILES\*.*" "C:\BACKUP" If I try and use the variables like in XP it will not run. There is no error but the command window comes up and then shuts down. I need the variables as they are field inputs that the user enters. Any suggestion would be appreciated.     - RUN Question I still have yet to learn about ShellExecute and would like to continue to use the RUN command because of the ability to leverage the "File Association" aspects of windows. In the CMD.COM and COMMAND.COM environment using the windows start menu "run" command, from the command prompt; START <filename.ext> ...will launch the users application of choice for that file extension, but VFP's "RUN" command launches NTVDM.EXE which seems to be a pretty crippled command shell... START for one won't work. I can address this by replacing the FOXRUN pif with a copy of the windows DOS pif, but would like some wisdom on what NTVDM.EXE is and how others deal with it.     - VFP9: Trouble updating view Hello, I have two views, both utilizing the same table. The views are simple and based on a single common table. The only difference between the two views are the filter parameters. All the proper PK and update fields have been checked in the view builder. Both these views reside in the same form data environment. Both views use default table buffering. The trouble starts when I save changes to an exsisting record, it requires that I save the changes twice before the base table recieves the update. I'm stumped!     - Spinner Events (Still vfp7) First time using a spinner control and not understanding when the spinner sourcecontrol is updating... In this example, the spinner controlsource is a form property containing a numeric value. The resulting value is used in a SEEK which, if successful, updates the form. Question: When is the spinner controlsource updated? I'm finding that I have to run math on the value to execute the seek... for example; If it's a "DownClick" event, I have to subtract the increment from the controlsource to execute the seek for the expected value following a downclick. What concerns me more is that when trying to track this using the debugger, the value did, at some points, decrement during the processing of the downclick event.     - Drag and drop onto report builder I give my users the chance to modify reports within our application. They also have various data entry forms. It is possible to have both open at the same time. The ideal way for a user to add a new field to the report would be to go to the data form and DRAG the field from the form onto the report builder surface. That way the user doesn't have to think about the internal field name and all that stuff. Ideally, as it was being dropped, it would call some method or procedure in which I could examine the field (object) being dropped and return .T. or .F. to permit it.     - Modify Report - failure and error message A report is stored on the server. Various users on the network want to modify the report from time to time, and run it. They Modify Report from their Command Window and are in the Design view. Then they can switch to the Preview view. Here is where the error comes in. Some users can then switch back to the Design view to keep tweaking the report, and switch back to Preview. That is, they can switch back and forth between Design and Preview. Other users can switch from the initial Design, and then to Preview, but when they try to switch back to Design, the process crashes with an error which reads: ! Cancel. OK Help The exclamation mark is in a yellow triangle, and the whole thing is in a rectangle. This is a strange message which says nothing. Now this is really an insignificant error, because the users can go right back from the Command Window into Modify Report. Still, it's bothersome, and it makes one wonder what's going on?     - Report Preview When you send a report for preview is there a way of eliminating the command box that appears in the upper left corner that allows the closing or printing of the report?? The reason is that I first let the user preview the report and then after they close the preview I bring up a message box that asks if they want to print the report. It appears that some users print the report to close it and then print the report again. Some user get confused easy. Thanks for any suggestions.     - Grid not following A while back posted and discussed a VFP7 problem concerning a form where the grid and current record pointer was not being maintained following actions such as an index change but never really addressed it because of the need to meet other needs.     - ActiveX and Socket Programming Has anyone used sockets with VFP? In particular, I have the mabry socket control and I'm trying to understand how to send and receive files. I know how to open the socket and use the methods and events to instant message and send a small packet of data over the LAN or the internet but I don't understand how to send a large file. I can't use FTP because I want to send the data directly to an IP address on a LAN via the internet in my application. It seems that the size of the buffer is around 8K by default but I'm confused as to whether the host tells the client "I'm ready for the next packet" or does the client just send the data to the host. Is there some standard protocol for this and also how does the host know when all the data is received since when opening a socket one can continue endlessly sending data?     - Total to <Fieldname>... is <FieldExpr> ok? I'm looking at some old code that uses the total to command. The help file specifies that the syntax is total to <TableName> on <FieldName> (ie group on a single field value), but the code I see uses a field expression, ie <Field1+Field2+Fieldx+etc>. It seems to work ok.     - Slow Accessing a memo field on a network Anyone have any ideas about this: here's the situation, I have a memo field that I use in a table and I read various lines from the memo field for default settings. This makes it so that I don't always have to modify the structure of the table. The total length of the memofield is small (under 3K). However, I have to read the memo field multiple times to get the default values on any particular line. For example: set memowidth to 8192 test1 = mline(mytable.mysettings, 1) test2 = memline(mytable.mysettings, 2) test3 = memline(mytable.mysettings, 3) test4 = memline(mytable.mysettings, 4) There are about 150 lines at present in the field. Here's the strange thing. I have a method in a form that reads all the values and sets the objects on the form accordingly. It seems like it is starting to take a long time to load the form (around 6-10 seconds). But, this delay is ONLY PRESENT if the table is open on another computer on the network. If I open the table on the same computer in a separate program (such as VFP) or I run another instance of my application, then everything is fast. The slowness only happens if the table is open on another workstation and it appears that it is just as slow if the table is open on 2 workstations or 10 (makes no difference). It drastically speeds up when the table is open on only one workstation and is fast even if that table is open on one computer with multiple programs (such as if it is open in my app as well as open in VFP). I have noticed this problem on both an XP Pro computer (as the server) with XP workstations and I have also noticed this problem on a real Win 2000 server with XP workstations. I'm using VFP 6/SP3. The problem only seems to happen when doing multiple reads from the same memofield many times. In other words, if I do this instead: m.lcMain = mytable.mysettings and I then populate the form using m.lcMain then everything is very fast. It's as if multiple reads to the same memofield is really slow but only if the table is open on another workstation. There are no virus checkers or other programs (that I know of) to slow it down). I can't understand why this is happening but I'm not sure if it is happening on other server OS's as well or just these few examples I have provided. I'm running the exe on the local machine. But, it seems to be some kind of network issue because the speed drastically slows down (reading the memo field multiple times) whether the table is open on two workstations or 10. It's then pretty much the same slow speed when open at 2 computers or more but lightening fast when open at only one. Anyone have any ideas?     - .net + fox com objects We have a program written in VB.net using the version 2 framework. The program uses a fox com object written using vfp8 and compiled as an exe. On our development machine everything works fine, it also works on SBS 2003 in our office. The problem is when we deploy it on our customer's SBS2003 machine we get the following error. The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT)) at satnavcom.htsatnavClass.set_CEXEPATH(Object CEXEPATH) at satnav.Form1.startdata() at satnav.Form1.DoWork() The error occurs at the point where a property of the com object is set. If I comment out the code which sets this property we get the same error but on the line which sets the next property. CEXEPATH in the exception above is the com object property it fails on. All necessary runtimes are on the machine and it is registered correctly. I have spent hours on this problem without success, has anyone come across any similar problems.     - Locate vs Seek Command Hi: I have a small aplication that runs only with free tables. I have been hearing that CDX files could get corrupted for a number of reasons, but the only reason I need the indexes is for some seek commands to validate certain fields. My tables are actually small mostly on the range of 500 to 1000 cases. Is is a good idea to change the seek commands with locate commands in order to avoid generating indexes, are CDX files necessary on free tables. should I expect performance problems with this change?     - Help: SQL remote view compare to local table Hello, having trouble with a solution to only query new records in a remote view and would like some help. Have a local table (free vfp table) with an ID field and a remote view to SQL table with the same ID field. What I want to do is change the remote view query to the SQL table to pull only records where the ID's do not match the local table. The reason is that this particular table contains 500,000 records and I'm trying to reduce the amount of data being pulled in the remote view itself. The result set would then contain only new records in the remote view since my last pull. No consideration needs to be made for changed records, just new records in the remote view as determined by an ID that does not match the local free table. I'm was thinking something like, use the remote view, use the table then a compare loop but that defeats the purpose as I'm still pulling all records in the remote view. Using the CREAT SQL VIEW and within the AS SELECT portion, can I reference data from the remote connection AND a local table at the same time? But if the local table isn't part of the remote connection won't that mess up? So the SELECT would be something like CREATE SQL VIEW 'MyView' REMOTE CONNECTION 'MyConn' AS SELECT RemoteViewTable.Field from RemoteViewTable where RemoteViewTable.Field = LocalFreeTable.Field?     - Triggering an application from SQL Server? Hi, I was just wondering would it be possible to have a trigger in a SQL 2000 database launch a VFP application to print a label? I think setting up the trigger is pretty straight forward but having it launch a VFP application is more tricky. I guess the trigger would have to pass a couple parameters that the application would use for a look up. Is this possible and what would I have to do on the VFP end to make it work? Just got bit by the fact that vfp7 didn't object to a combobox object being set to readonly within a method. ...turns out that doing so is ineffective and that the combobox will still change the control source in that state <sigh> So, on the surface, it seems as if the only direct option is to set the combobox to .not. enabled. However, that also precludes being able to view the combo box's contents, so, wondering if there is an easy way to allow the user to view the pulldown while preventing it from changing the control source?
