Anyone know whether it's possible to develop with VFP9 and VFP9SP1 on the
same computer?

Along those same lines, is there an easy way to upgrade in place an existing
installed application?

I have an app that is installed in several locations. Currently I update by
simply replacing the exe. I want to do further development with SP1, but I
assume I'll have to replace all the VFP runtime files as well, and I'm
looking for a simple way to do that.

Yes and no...

Install a second copy of VFP 9 in a different folder and just apply the SP
in one spot. The problem will be that the merge modules will be updated.

New merge modules are included in the SP. Include those with the setup.

I was trying to find a way to avoid having to run setup on each of 3-5
workstations at more than a dozen locations.

For updates now, I just update one copy of a new exe on the server, and each
workstation updates itself. If I could find a similar way to update the
runtime files as well, that would be great.

The common files get updated also, and I'm not sure which, if any, the ide
would use.

So is this Service Pack just for the development environment only or
do I need to reinstall anything for client workstations?

Recompile your apps and redistribute them and the runtimes.

Paul?

I am curious to know.

Why, if you have more than 12 locations with at least 5 computer
workstations at each, do you install the program at the workstation end?

You can have a single server for each location and you don't have to ever
worry about the workstations.

I don't swear by Citrix but it could be a good option for you to look at,
unless you preffer Micorsoft Terminal Service Clents.

Either way it would be great for you.

Another thing I would have you think of is, SP1 does not eliminate any of
the options you used to program before, so having everything on a Server
Side would be the best way to maintain your upgrades/updates.

I know it sound crazy because you probably already have something set up,
but to move to this type of setup is really not that expensive, especially
if you already have servers at each location.

Well, this is the best solution I can give you so that you will never go
through this again.

By the way, if you decide to do Citrix, it will help you a lot more than any
other I have seen.

Anyway, what ever you decide to do I hope this helped in some way.

Sincerely,

Johnny Cinco
