Migrating to VFP from Paradox I presently have a number of applications written with ObjectPAL and Paradox 10 running presently, however am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I need to move away (Corel is not really doing much with it .. now). Problem is that most of the users who use these applications do not need SQL or anything heavyweight and am happy to stay with file-based databases and recently picked up the press coverage on VFP 9. It sounds pretty damn good for what I want/need and wondered if anyone else has had to migrate from Paradox to VFP in the past and has any useful hints/tips or pitfalls in making such a migration.     - VFP8 Help entry for Arrays and Select - SQL ... Wrong or what? I've copied the bulk of the VFP8 help entry for sending query results to an array below. If you look at the output for the company column, the values are all trim()/alltrim()'d -- a behavior I'd like to duplicate. Unfortunately, the best I can do is to trim() the appropriate results by hand after my queries execute. So...is the help entry wrong or am I missing something? -Lew SELECT - SQL is a versatile command for querying tables and can direct query results to an array. To send SELECT - SQL query results to an array, specify the INTO ARRAY clause with an array name. If the array doesn't exist, it is automatically created. If the array does exist, it is redimensioned automatically to accommodate the query results.     - Select - SQL vs. SUM I have a grid whose recordsource is a table named _payments. In this table there is a column in which user enters the amount of payment received for the respective invoice. This column is no. 8 in the grid and is the last column. The table contains outstanding invoices for a particular customer. In the lostfocus event of the the column, I placed the following code: Thisform.txtUnused.refresh The txtUnused is a text box that displays the unused portion of the total payment received from that customer. The Text Box has its controlsource set to nBalance. I place the following code in Refresh Event of txtUnused: Select _Payments sum Thispmt to TotalPmt nBalance=nPayment-TotalPmt && nPayment is the total payment received. Select Customer This code works fine the way it is. However, when I change the code to a SELECT-SQL statement, I run into a weird behaviour. The SQL code reads: Select sum(Thispmt) from _payments into array TotalPmt nBalance=nPayment-TotalPmt With the SQL statement when I change the value in ThisPmt column for the first time and hit Enter key, the value in txtUnused is updated and the focus moves the 1st column in the grid which is a Checkbox control. Now, while staying on the same row if I navigate to the last column and change the value again, the txtUnused doesn't get updated. Except for the first time, no matter how many times I change the value in the ThisPmt column, the txtUnused stays the same as the first time value. When I press down arrow key and then up arrow again, then the value gets updated. With the SUM statement, it works perfectly fine. As soon the value is changed in that column and I press Enter Key, the value in txtUnused gets updated and focus moves to 2nd column in stead of 1st column as was the case when I use Select SQL statement. Can someone please explain this to me why it is happening the way it is. I would prefer to use the SQL SELECT in stead of SUM statement.     - Detecting when a "modify ... NOWAIT" is complete I am using vfp6 I want to be able to detect when a programmer has completed modifying files. I will start the edit from a button click but I want to use the NOWAIT option on the modify command. Then when the file has been modified I would like to do some processing on it. I would prefer not to use a timer to check whether the forms are still being modified. I want something closer to an event. I have tried bindevents, but it doesn't seem to work with a form. I get "No such interface supported". The other option is to watch the date and times on the files in a particular directory but again I wanted to avoid using a timer for polling.     - Transparent bitmaps for buttons in our application (VFP 7) we have a toolbar that has a series of buttons on. I have created a .MSK file for each button to be able to have their background transparent but there is still some apparent pixel bleed in some of them.     - AutoInc problem, VFP8 Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem, it's the first time I've seen it. One of my tables has a pk, inst_id, which is set to autoinc. I bombed today on the uniqueness of my key which seemed strange considering I have no reason to manipulate any autoinc'd pk's directly. Nevertheless, it did turn out that the next val somehow or other had become set to a ridiculously low value ( 3 in a table of 50 entries).     - Application minimising onto toolbar I have a small single form project with the following settings: _screen.visible = .f. desktop = true Showwindow = As Top Level form If I create a desktop shortcut and run it with nothing else open, everything is fine, it appears in the centre of the screen. If I run the program by double-clicking on it via Windows Explorer, or if another program is open, it immediately minimises onto the task bar.     - buffering & transactions It is not necessary to buffer a table for transactions to work. Nevertheless, I usually buffer a table (or use a view), then if a transaction is necessary, put the transaction only around the TABLEUPDATE in order to keep the transaction short. But I'm really guessing here. Am I approaching it in the best manner? What general rules are there for handling buffering and transactions? Also, I occasionally want a transaction to cover changes to several tables, with some calculation done during the process, and even a couple nested transactions. The whole thing could take a few seconds (in a multi-user environment). Is there anything specific I need to look out for? Other than the limit on transaction levels, I mean. I have a bunch of activate window routines where I make a choice with an Accept to memvar command My choices are the Enter key (enter nothing) or enter a single character, e.g. the letter "K" to Keep something the same etc. Is there a way to force the program to continue execution after ANY key is pressed, not just the Enter Key. Procedure FilterTail CurFil=filter() Accept " Enter FT without quotes: " to FT * e.g. I type in AND CID=" " * i.e. FT will = AND CID=" " NewFil=CurFil+FT Set Filter to &NewFil It works and the filter became (CID=CIDX.OR.(COMPANY==COMPX.AND.CID=" ")).AND.CID=" " Now I want a program allowing me to type in a string, any string to strip out of the existing filter. For starters I'd tried to amputate the tail I had added using a strntran function but the problem is that FoxPro tweaked what I had typed into the VAR FT by removing spaces and adding periods. AND CID=" " became .AND.CID=" " in the actual filter() so strtran(filter(),FT,"") doesn't see .AND.CID=" ", because it is looking for AND CID=" " with the space between AND and CID instead of the surrounding periods. Can someone suggest a routine that will display the existing filter in an editable Wait Window or Activate Window text box? I'm very bad on forms.     - old screen .spr I updated from 2.xx to 9.0 (Im a newbie,I not the original grammer) I do know the old screens were spr and the new forms are scx I see some forms convert from XXX.SPR to XXX.SCX When I look at modi XXX.SPR sometimes it says External Proc XXX.scx Do Form XXX.scx and sometimes it keeps the program language to generate a form. When I look at the XXX.prg that calls forth the old screen it shows Do XXX.SPR if I change the line to read Do Form XXX.SCX it will run the form but not always correctly. For example if I click on the Exit button I have to click twice. My question is should I change all the Do XXX.spr, to Do Form XXXX.spx or just leave well enough alone.     - sys(2005) issue I just noticed that in our app in the config.fpw file we have SET RESOURCE OFF. I believe this works because no foxuser gets created in the current directory. However, we have a system diag screen that shows the current resource file, and it shows a foxuser.dbf in the application directory. This file does not exist. I duplicated this in a simple test application. AFAICT, sys(2005) will show a foxuser in the app (or default) directory, even when SET RESOURCE is off and the foxuser does not actually exist.     - VFP8 Views with grids in general - Paramaterized or SEEK() - Filtering Same About 1.5 years ago I was dragged kicking & screaming from my DOS world in one department into the VFP8 world in another department. My boss & I recently had a "philosophical difference of opinion" on how to search a view driven grid for specific records. He always uses a paramaterized view, and prompts the user for input. He even showed me documentation in KiloFox and/or MegaFox that said that's the only way to go. I recently developed an app that creates a couple of indexes on the view while the screen is loading. I then use a SEEK() command based on the user input. Additionally, the user can set one or two filters if need be. Everything seems to work OK and quite fast. My question is, does VFP8 handle view driven grids better than the earlier versions? KiloFox & MegaFox were written for the earlier vfp versions, weren't they? I have invoice and payment transactions for over 200 different companys each of whom sells to thousands of customers (so it is no surprise that I will soon be facing the 2,000,000 record barrier). Transactions are often incorrectly posted and must be found. They can be incorrect in a number of ways such as wrong company, wrong customer, wrong amount, wrong invoice number, wrong check number, wrong check amount, wrong invoice data, etc. My search utility is basically a grid control (browse) of the entire table that allows sorting and searching by any of these fields. Users search for the information and then browse through information that is close. Because everything is done with DBFs and index tags there is no delay when they change search criteria and sort order. An SQL database that demands requerying for each search would slow down the application and provide fewer options. How do some of you C/S people or opponents of "Large Lists" approach this problem in an SQL type of environment.     - VFP7 Application disappearing when maximised At one of our customer sites, they are having frequent problems of being booted out of our VFP7 application after it has been minimised for a while. They are also running a GIS application (ArcView). The 2 applications actually communicate with each other using DDE services. It is happening on all their pcs. To me this sounds like Windows (2000 and XP) memory management not coping very well but are there other issues I should be looking at? This has only started happening since they upgraded from our VFP6 application version to our VFP7 one. They may have also had some network changes but it's hard to pin them down. I use a .prg to set up a few vars and things which then starts a form using DO FORM Main from the .prg. When the app runs in runtime (.EXE). It starts loads the database up (I know this by using the popular WAIT WINDOW debug method), but then the app shuts down. It happens so quick I cant really see if the form shows or not. Ive seen this behavoiur before in runtime whne the forms are not model. But I have a model form in this instance. This infor may be relevent Windowstate = Max WindowType = Model AlwaysOnBottom = .f.     - Calling HTML Help in VFP 6 Hi, folks. We're updating from WinHelp to HTML Help in our apps. We link the *.chm file to project and can call it from the help menu pick fine. And the F1 integration works correctly. But when we call HTML help with a specific context ID, nothing happens at all. The help file does not even open much less to the specific topic.     - Slight VFP9 oddity VFP9 on XP Pro SP1 I'm sure I somehow changed some setting will doing all my normal setup on my new installation of VFP9, but I didn't even know this was possible... In the code editing window, the Object and Procedure dropdowns are using Courier as the font for the list items. The current object and method shown when the list is not dropped down continues to be in the expected Arial-like font, but the contents of both drop downs are Courier. Wierd. I've fiddled with the Tools>Options settings that are font-related, but it doesn't seem to change this. IF_Tally > 0 * Do something ENDIF The above query gave me no results, laZoot was empty, yet _Tally was set to 1. I've not used _Tally much, and I'm wondering how reliable it is. It is possible something somewhere fired, causing _Tally to not have the count from my query. This would indicate that _Tally is reliable but you have to be carefull how you use it.     - SQL upsizing Hello and thanks in advance for the help... I've got an application where the main table has 1,300,000 records and appears to be growing by 350,000 - 400,000 per year. A few years ago the growth rate was half that. I'm thinking that I should start looking at issues involving scaling the database up to SQL Server or something like it. This application is very "Table Oriented" having been around for over 15 years and having been started in FPD. SQL is used but mostly for extracting data for reports. There is a lot of code that uses direct SEEKs against the tables and REPLACE as the update mechanism. There are even some modules which browse through entire tables using a grid control. Has anyone been through this type of conversion and can you tell me how you've solved some of these problems?     - Scaning through updated records I want to preprocess all updated records in a table with buffering mode 5 set. I know I can scan for "2" $ GETFLDSTATE(-1) or something like that however imagine my table has a huge number of records. I assume this would be most inefficient and not rushmore optimised.     - VFP 9.0 and Registration Hello all and thanks in advance for the help. Does VFP 9.0 have the same type of registration / authentication that is used in Windows and Office these days? As a developer I have always had my single copy installed on the desktop and laptop machines that I use and I've always figured that since I'm never using both machines at the same time, that this does not violate the spirit of the license agreement.     - Multiple form problem I am using parent form for editing data in the master using the cursorsetpro(buffering,5) mode. The complete data accessible under one primary key say code of the client. Everything is fine till now. but I want to query the data if the code is not known for which i have created the another form which i am using by giving the Do formname command. Here before giving the command I am changing the order to the data to name field. Here the data query time taken by the same form is much more. & i have set the combobox using listonly property. But during the increamental search it is going too slow. I need to press first the 1st alphabet it takes some time & then increamental search for the same alphabets can be done. To go from A alphabet to S in only 7 to 8 thousand records it takes too much time. Please tell me what am i doing wrong or is there any other way to do this.
