Hello I need some verification. How far up a version can I upgrade. Or can I
upgrade all the way to version 8. I need a procedure on what is the better
way to upgrade on this old version without getting that many error in
between. What type of software whether is a full version or an upgrade will I
need to do it. The PC that is goint is a Pentium 4 512Ram 40 GB with Windows
2000 or XP. If someone can help I will definetely will appreciated.

if you want to take advantage of the many great features of VFP8, then a
rewrite is your best option. Most fox2.x code will run fine in VFP8 though.

Here's an old doc on converting fox 2x apps to vfp.

Hi Aguardiola,

As Eric said, a re-write is your best option to take advantage of all the
new features in Visual FoxPro. However, don't spend time upgrading to VFP8
when VFP9 is just around the corner and offers even more improvements.
There's a free public Beta downloadable from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/ and it's definitely stable enough to get
started. VFP9 should release to manufacturing at the end of the year, and be
available on store shelved around the middle of February.

Bah for two reasons which possibly do not apply to you, but they
might.

1) Versions 9 and 8 (and 7 and 6 and 5) are not that different. If
you really need a 9 feature, then yes, hold off, but if not, go with
8. Code written for 8 will run in 9, too.

2) Is this a mission-critical app? If so, it would be folly to run
it on a beta or a recent release.

To add to the other posts; with a view to cost there is no upgrade path from
2.x - you'd have to buy the full version from scratch

Hi Gene,

I figured the OP would have some development time ahead of him and that his
app wouldn't be ready before VFP9 hit store shelves.

I don't buy the "folly to run ... a recent release." Although there may be
undiscovered bugs in some new features, many bugs in long-standing features
are fixed in each new version.

Please quote appropriately! I stated: "Is this a
mission-critical app? If so, it would be folly to run it on a beta or
a recent release."

If it is mission critical, the risk is too high. The previous
VFP versions' bugs stand a much better chance of being known and
having solutions. (Of course, there are no absolute guarantees.)

If it is not mission critical, maybe OP can live with the
inevitable bugs.
