I am finally going to get a shiny, new computer; one that was
built in this millennium.

The same goes with VFP. I will shortly be using VFP 9. (If you
are thinking of joking that this is a sure sign that VFP 10 and 11
will be released RSN, I thought of it first. Neener, neener!)

My question, which is not answered by the Microsoft Website as
far as I could see, is is VFP 6 sufficient in order to order the VFP 9
upgrade?

Lee Mitchell, I might have gone with VFP 9 sooner if there were a
clear statement that VFP 9 development works on a Windows 98 machine.
(Tying software upgrades to hardware upgrades can delay the software
upgrade, something a software company should think about not doing.)

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Hi Gene:

Great to hear you got a new machine. Enjoy!

Yes, Visual FoxPro 6.0 is OK to use as the upgrade product for VFP 9.0.
You can install the upgrade version and leave both versions on the same box
if you wish, or you can remove VFP 6.0 after you install VFP 9.0.

Visual FoxPro 9.0 development version only installs on Windows 2000 and
later. You can run VFP 9.0 custom EXE on Windows 98 and later.

Don't forget to install SP1 for VFP 9.0.

I hope this helps.

Interestingly, I would not have gotten the upgrade if I had not
had a horrible attack of homesickness. (I do not recommend this
upgrade path as a general procedure.)

I am returning to Canada (specifically back to Kamloops, BC) at
the end of the month. I will be working only about half-time (since I
have to be replaced on the other functions that I have been doing down
here), so I fall under the "Help Keep Gene in Computers [that are not
TOO old (at least according to some)]" agreement my boss and I have.
He is paying 60%, I am paying 40%. I am getting a laser printer, too.
At the end of lifecycle, the system is all mine.

Anyone knowing of any jobs in Kamloops, please let me know at
gene spl@t abhost dot us. Starting around Sep. 1, my E-mail address
in Kamloops will be genew spl@t ocis dot net. If it looks familiar,
it is because it is my old Kamloops E-mail address.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

There is an error on the VFP home page. There are two how-to-buy
links. The one one the left is correct. The one at the top middle
point to Visual Studio 2005.

That is a bit that I have not heard before, that it only installs
on the later machines. What I have seen before has been that it runs
on those OSs.

Right.

Thank you.

Hi Gene:

Thanks for the update about the Web page links. This one should work for
you.

I should say that the VFP 9.0 dev environment is only supported in
platforms Windows 2000 and later.

Here is the VFP Help file for all the technical spec you need:

1.1. System Requirements
Visual FoxPro has the following minimum system requirements:

· Processor: Pentium class

· Memory: 64 MB RAM (128 MB or higher recommended)

· Available Hard Disk Space:

· Visual FoxPro Prerequisites - 20 MB

· Visual FoxPro Minimum Install - 115 MB

· Visual FoxPro Maximum Install - 155 MB

Note You must install Visual FoxPro on a local hard drive, not a mapped
drive.

· Video: 800 x 600 resolution, 256 colors (High Color 16-bit
recommended)

· Operating System: Developing applications with Visual FoxPro
9.0 is only supported on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and later,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. You can create and distribute run-time
applications for Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or
later, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.

Note Installation on Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition is not
supported.

I hope this helps.
