Hi All,

Printers and their drivers can be such a headache!!!

I have a customer who went out and bought an HP Photosmart 7660
printer to use with his Win98SE machine. When he sets that
printer as the default and runs my application, it immediately
and completely locks up! No Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Nothing!

If he sets a different printer as a default all is well.
Does anyone have a clue on this?

HP does not seem to. They have a history of causing trouble for
Fox. The next printer that I buy is not very likely to be an HP
printer.

Hi Alec,

Which Vfp version / servicepack level do you use?
Did you try the _fpreset() trick as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;183522

Hi Alec:

Does the customer have the most recent printer driver from the
manufacturer? Does the problem occur if you boot the machine in Safe Mode?

I hope this helps.

Hi Lee (have not spoken to you in a long time!)

I don't know if the customer has the most recent printer driver.
He bought the printer yesterday and is using whatever driver
was in the box (Understandalby that may not be the latest)?

I have not had the customer try starting the machine in Safe
Mode. If I'm not mistaken in SAFE mode the printer drivers
as well as many other drivers in the OS don't load (correct?).
We alreay know that if he selects a different printer as the
default all is OK, but as soon as he makes this new printer
the default it locks up.

Again, the user need not even try to print anything. Simply
starting the APP will do it. Since I do nothing with printers
in my startup code, that is why it appears that VFP itself
does and that "seems" to where the issue is.

What version of VFP?

I have that exact printer model and don't experience this problem. (I also
don't run an operating system as outdated as Win98SE. <g>)

I can imagine HP optimizing their drivers for this fancy-dancy color photo
printer for later versions of Windows.

Hi Stefan,

My App is in VFP8 SP1. I have approx 400 installations
on varying OS platforms.

_fpreset. Yes I have imbeded the _fpreset throughout my app.
In this circumstance the way the customer describes it, simply
starting my APP, without trying to print causes this Lockup
type behavior. It is as if VFP tries to communicate with the
default printer as part of its startup and encounters a problem.

I can also imagine them screwing it up. They have a well-earned
reputation for that. Personal examples:

1) The driver for my HP DeskJet 870cxi does not keep track of the
page being printed. Instead, I see a status of "Page 0 of <n>"
throughout the job. A previous version did work in this regard, but
had other troubles

2) If I start a print job with my printer off, I get an error. The
error tells me that I have to restart Windows to get the printer
going. I have tested this, and yes, I do have to restart Windows.
This is ludicrous.

Interesting!, I have not seen such an effect yet and have no
Photosmart 7660 to test..
What happens when you build a test.exe from a project just
containing one prg with a single line like Messagebox(5)

Alec -
can you reproduce the environment back in your lab ?
same computer os, same printer driver set ?
if you can reproduce the environment,
see if you can reproduce the error.

Also - check out the stuff from sysinternals - they have a good file
tracking util
- it may be that the hp driver in question has either some
functional dependencies that are walking on the ms C run times [rare]
or it has a nasty memory leak that is tromping on the vfp runtimes [not so
rare]

Hi Bill,

I don't have the env. to reproduce the problem here in our ofice.
We have neither W98 or the 7660 Printer. We are trying to gather
more info on the problem.. I was simply fishing to see if anyone
else had seen similar issues.

That's because it crashed the print spooler which always runs in the
background on 9x. On Windows NT (ie 2k + XP as well) you can just go to the
services and start the spooler service, no reboot is necessary.

It's possible you can find spool32.exe and run that again but this is NOT
recommended practice and is likely to cause more problems than it solves.

As noted in previous posts, HP printer drivers and Fox are a notorious
combination. Sometimes it only works with newer drivers, sometimes only with
older drivers and sometimes only with completely different drivers.

Maybe you can find a different printer driver that will work with Fox and
give you the features you need in Fox. For example, it may well work OK in
Fox with a Laserjet 4 driver but you'd obviously lose all colour features
etc.
Hopefully you can find a driver that doesn't kick up errors with a much
better compromise than my example.

We have a Business Inkjet 1100 and that crashes Foxpro for us repeatedly.
Using the Business Inkjet 2200 driver it runs OK..
