    - Foxpro nubie: Migrate 2.6 Unix to Windows? Hello all, I have a client that has been running an SCO Unix FoxPro 2.6 database and I would like to migrate it to Windows. Is it as easy as buying a Windows version of FoxPro and moving the actual database tables and forms? I'm prepared to do some work as necessary, but would like to understand the "got-ya's" before I quote the conversion. What would be the best version of FoxPro to convert into: Visual, etc.?? I have a good database background, but am unfamiliar with FoxPro.     - Network printing We are changing our network environment from Novell to Windows Server 2003 and we have several FPD2.6 legacy programs that utilize network printing. With Novell I was able to capture the port and print directly to the printer. However, I have not been able to print to the network printers under our new Windows Server network. I have used the the following command with no success: SET PRINTER TO \\<Network Name>\<Printer Name> = LPT1: What am I doing wrong? The printer is connected to the network via a HP Jet Direct print server with TCP\IP addressing and it is identified through the server as a shared printer.     - Any idea how to implement internet billing software Hi everyone, A client of mine just opened an internet cafe in our town. He asked me whether I can embed automatic billing application into my-already-run-POS apps. He got 25 computers in his cafe. All connected with 100 Mbps Ethernet connections. He got a wireless connection to the internet, and most of his customers are using the computer to play ragnarok (online games). He charge his customer on time basis, and he wanted the system to automatically record computer usage time (and bill) whenever the customer login on one of the computer and stop the timer (and print the bill) when the customer logout. A friend of mine suggested that this will involve winsock programming. Honestly, I never touch winsock, so I think I just asked here first. Anybody here got any idea how to implement such application? Is VFP capable of doing real-time transaction (I mean, transaction that heavily depends on time). AR has a 1 - 1 relationship with CHECKS on the field CHK_NUM The init code to open the tables is: USE AR IN 0 USE CHECKS IN 0 ORDER CHK_NUM SELECT AR SET RELATION TO CHK_NUM INTO CHECKS The Grid's RecordSource is AR The Problem I'm having is with Dynamic Fore and Back Colors. For one of the columns I have: DynamicForeColor set to iif(not empty(checks.rd),rgb(255,255,255),rgb(0,0,0)) DynamicBackColor set to iif(not empty(checks.rd),rgb(0,0,0),rgb(255,255,255)) This should have the effect of having that column displayed as white on black instead of black on white when the RD field in Checks is not empty. The effect I'm observing is that when you move the cursor to a row in which CHECKS.RD is not empty the entire column turns white on black. Once you move the cursor to a row where CHECKS.RD is empty then the entire column reverts to normal. I am looking to have only those rows where CHECKS.RD is not empty display as white on black.     - How to deal when ODBC throw up 'Connection is busy with results for another hstmt'? Hi all, I insert 183 rows to a specific table in SQL Server (say, T035). The method I used was I created a remote view rv_location with (CREATE SQL VIEW rv_location REMOTE CONNECTION "Conn" AS SELECT T035.* FROM dbo.T035 T035), and do the insertion to the remote view. After the insertion, I couldn't run all forms that have remote views related to T035. Whenever I run the form, ODBC sent "Connection is busy with results for another hstmt" error. It's really confusing because: 1. The database is on my local machine, and I am not connected to any network. This means nobody use the server except vfp. 2. Although I cannot open the rv from my form's DE (Data Environment), when I use the remote view from VFP IDE, the cursor filled with appropriate value. No error from ODBC. I searched SQL Server Online Books, and I found out that the cause either SQL Server doesn't support SELECT * FROM... (???) or SQL Server treat it as bulk copy. It is said that "the solution is to call bcp_done" --- and I don't know how to call bcp_done (tried it with SQLEXEC) I'm really confused here. I tried to exit and re-run vfp with no luck. I tried to reboot my computer --- still with no luck. I even (stupidly --- it's funny how we suddenly do something that obviously has nothing to do with the error when unknown error happened!---) tried to delete the view from my form's DE, pack the .scx, and attached the view back again; of course with no luck! Can anybody help me what to do with this error?     - Grid Problem, Please Help This example is simpilfied for brevity but accurate: I have two tables AR and CHECKS. They both have the field CHK_NUM and there is a 1-1 relationship between AR and CHECKS. I have a grid on a form with a private data session an AR is the RecordSouce In the init method of the form when I'm opening the tables I have: USE CHECKS ORDER CHK_NUM USE AR SET RELATION TO CHK_NUM INTO CHECKS I have some text boxes on the form to show me some of the values from the CHECKS table. They are always empty and this is the problem. If instead I don't use SET RELATION but instead put the following code in the in the AfterRolColChange method of the grid: SELECT CHECKS SEEK AR.CHK_NUM SELECT AR then I see the values from the CHECKS table. The problem is that this method doesn't allow me to make use of Dynamic Fore and Back Colors. Does anyone know why seeking for the records in the AfterRolColChange method works and SET RELATION doesn't? Thanks in advance.     - Too many variables and disk fragmentation We develop in VFP 6, and deploy on W2K. As you will be aware, scheduling disk defragmentation is not straightforward on W2K. Consequently our customers can get badly fragmented disks. The latest version of our software displays a "Too many variables" message when deployed on a computer with a badly fragmented harddrive, and either does not load properly or loads very slowly. After defragmenting the disk the application runs smoothly. I suspect that the badly fragmented disk is resulting in a lot of memory being used to access files, and the "Too many variables" is the result of a memory allocation error of some type. The new version of the program does allocate more strings to some large objects that contain all the text strings used in the application. Finally, there does seem to be a defrag control on my system. It is accessable via Tools/Options/Controls Page/ActiveX option box. Any idea how I can use it?     - Include problem foxpro 3.0 Hi, I include a constant file in my main program, this file is called constanten.h. After I modify this constanten.h with new values for my constants and save this file , I run my main program, after the run it looks like the main program works with the " old" values and not with the updated values. But if I interupt the main program after the #include constanten.h command and resume the program then I don't have the problem and the main program works with the updated values.     - Problem with Kodak Image Scan ActiveX Control Hi, in my aplication I use Kodak Image Scan ActiveX Control from Windows Imaging for scanning the images. It works fine wenn file format in controls properties specified as .tiff. But when I try to change it to .jpeg. the I always become run time error from the control: invalid compression type on machines working under win2k or winXP.     - Question about master - details form and CursorAdapter Hi, I have the following situation: - an order form, which contains order info (number, date, etc) and order details - the form uses a custom designed datasession classes, with two cursor adapters, one bound to order table and one to orderdetails Datasession doesn't open tables at startup, but instead I call DS.Opentables. This is because I want to use the same for both adding new orders and editing old ones When I want to create a new order, I set SelectCmd for orders CA to "select * from orders where ordID=0", then I issue an append blank to that cursor, to add orders. OrdID is Integer(AutoInc) field type Also, I set SelectCmd to orderdetails CA to "select * from orddet where ordid =0", and add new rows here as appropriate The problem is when I want to save, I need to update for all orddetails records ordid with the ID from order table. However CA does not populate ordid with the proper id, so I don't know how to get OrdID to update orddetails. I don't want to access orders table directly, to keep app independent on datasource Also, I don't want to issue a tableupdate then a requery because if somehow update fails on details, I don't want to have an Orders record w/o details in database.     - Second Try: Please Help; Update Conflicts and Table Buffering Wow, you folks are usually much faster than this! <g> But it is the holiday season, and some of us are less geeky than others. Still, I realized that I didn't directly ask a question up front, so I'll try again. How do I verify that my update conflict system will work properly in a multiple child-record update scenario? It seems to me that optimistic table buffering isn't working as advertised. I know that can't be true, that I must be misunderstanding something, but I can't get a clue here. I'm creating a n-tier system that strives to completely decouple data from user interface. There are no controls bound to fields, no use of form data environments, and no local views. Its "back end" uses native VFP tables, and I use objects containing properties for parent data, and member arrays for child data, to transport the data back and forth. I realize that I need to use optimistic table buffering for the child tables. So far, though, I've been unable to generate an update conflict in that buffering mode to test my system. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Can anyone please help? My demo code is below; it's a very simplified abstraction of my real system. It starts out with optimistic row buffering first simply to demonstrate the only conditions under which I've been able to generate an update conflict to test the system. The demo system can't generate an update conflict using optimistic table buffering under any circumstances, and I'm pretty sure that in real life it must be possible for such conflicts to occur. If you can kindly help me, please follow the instructions below to run the demo, and then let me know what you think. I'd even appreciate a "You're nuts, you can't do that!" at this point. Thank you very, very much for your help. Ken Dibble Demo Instructions 1. Please run the code below simultaneously in two different VFP sessions. 2. In both sessions, click on the last record in the combobox to put it into the textboxes. Change the first name value to something different in each session. 3. Press the ENTER button to update the combo with your changes in both sessions. 4. In the SECOND session, press SAVE to commit the changes to the table. Press the RESUME button in the debugger and close the debugger frame. 5. In the FIRST session, press SAVE. When the debugger opens, set watches on the following values: CURVAL("firstname") OLDVAL("firstname") EVAL("firstname") 6. Step through the code and watch those values. In the first record to be updated, all three of those values will be different and TABLEUPDATE() will throw an update conflict error, trapped by the MESSAGEBOX(). 7. Close both instances and start over. This time, modify the first name values in the second row of the combobox and watch what happens. You can't get a situation where CURVAL() doesn't equal OLDVAL(), because as soon as the record pointer is moved by SKIP, OLDVAL() changes for ALL the records in the table. 8. Comment out the CURSORSETPROP("Buffering",3,"multitest") line in the form class's FillCombo() method and uncomment the CURSORSETPROP("Buffering",5,"multitest") line. 9. Run the test steps again. No matter which array row you modify, or what order you do the updates in, you can't get an update conflict using my steps above. My steps to modify the third record in the array--which require no movement of the record pointer--should create an instant update conflict in table buffering, with CURVAL(), OLDVAL() and EVAL() all holding different values, just as they do in row buffering, but they just don't. The problem is already in existence at that point, so, it seems to me, neither a DO WHILE GETNEXTMODIFIED <> 0 ... ENDDO loop nor the issuance of TABLEUPDATE() can have anything to do with the problem. However, I will note that when I was testing my parent record updating system, I found that issuing either a GO TOP, a SEEK, or a SEEK() with table buffering would make it impossible to detect any conflicts, because all of those commands instantly set OLDVAL() equal to CURVAL() for all fields in all records--contrary to what the VFP documentation says should happen. (That's not a problem with parent records because the pointer isn't going to move between when I retrieve the data and when I put it back.) I've found that I can do an UPDATE SQL without moving the record pointer, but that doesn't change the results I get from CURVAL() and OLDVAL().     - Passing parameters to a menu Hi all! myMeny is designed in the menudesigner and is used in a top level form as it´s mainmenu. In the forms init the menu is started with do myMenu.mpr with this,.T. If I pass additional parameters for the bar´s captions than the two (this and .T.) allready passed - how can I receive the parametervalues in the menudesigners´s myMenu setup? A parameters statement doesn´t work. This works just fine in a shorcutmenu but not in a toplevelform´s main menu. Any hint would be very appreciated.     - How do I reset debugger ? Hi, Unfortunatly I put the getfile() into the watch window and now I can't open the debugger to remove it. I know there must be a resource file somewhere that holds my defaults (foxuser????) but I can't seem to locate it. I want to restore the debugger to its defaults so I can use it.     - Can't attach icon OK, someone riddle me this: I'm trying to attach an icon to a project. I click the Attach Icon check box. That select icon dialog appearrs. I select an icon, and click OK. It returns me to the project manager, but the icon checkbox is not checked. It seems to ignore my icon. My icon has both 16X16 and 32X32 pixel images in it, per the VFP docs. What am I missing?
