Users are not happy with the slow response they are
getting from a new server install of Windows 2000 running
FoxPro 2.5, 2.6 and FoxPro for windows. The system was
running on a Windows 3.51 server that was upgraded to 4.0
and now, the server need to be retired and the application
needs to run under windows 2000 any help on performance
increase would be great.

Hello Daniel, there is so much that can be done to improve performance on a
server. I checked the specs for win2000 server and the minimum system
requirements are ridiculously low for realistic usage. Without knowing your
hardware I'd say right off that it should be at least a Pentium III (at
least) and at least 512 megs of RAM (at least).

How many users? How large is the FoxPro database? What OS are the
workstations running? Did the workstation get upgraded to win2k clients as
well?

Sometimes people running an older version of Windows with 8 megs of RAM,
think that they would never need 128 MB never mind 512MB, but everyone
running the XP OS should have at least 512MB of RAM, even though it can run
on 64Megs, and the minimum system requirements are probably about 128MB.

Same with disk Defragmenter. I've known hundreds of technicians that don't
believe in running Defrag and it is always the same story....Why spend 4
hours running defrag to save a few seconds afterwards.... They just don't
understand how and why it works.

So, I'm just guessing that the new server has a really slow CPU or not
enough RAM to run a peak performance. If the workstations were also upgraded
to win2k then it could be foxprowcfg setting.

Hope this helps.
John
