    - Northwind Demo Application If anyone has some time, your feedback of a demo product I'm developing would be greatly appreciated. I suppose you might call it a framework, but that may be going a bit far. The program includes a demo of the Northwind Database shipped with VFP 8.0. The demo is also compiled in VFP 8, and looks best when run on Windows XP.     - WAIT WINDOW doesn't wait! I'm working with an accounting system written if VFP6. It allows my to run my own code from within the application. In trying to debug, I inserted a few WAIT WINDOW "<text>" commands so that I could see where my code was failing. Strangely, the window appears but it doesn't wait. The program just keeps on execution. This is NOT a WAIT WINDOW NOWAIT. Any idea how this happens? The application is an EXE, not an APP so it's not running under the VFP runtime.     - VFP8 and installer Hi, I noticed that VS.NET 2003 has a template for building Setup projects under "Setup and Deployment". Has anyone used this to deploy VFP8 apps? Is there any documentation on how to do this? Our app has activex components and we use a post install procedure when we install it under VFP6. We don't want to use installshield.     - run VFP program as Windows 2000 service Hi all, I want to run my VFP 8 program as a Windows 2K service. This utility program constantly looks for some data and imports/exports to another application. I have made classes (one timer and other olepublic - timer class calls olepublic class methods periodically) and added code. But now I need to make it as a Windows service. How can I do this?     - Using local view exclusively = reducing table corruption possibility??? Hi all, Just crossed my mind this afternoon: as we all understand, whenever we put a local view in the form's Data Environment, then vfp would open the underlying tables as well. I wonder if this has anything to do with table corruption possibility. I mean; what if the form only open the local view and not the underlying tables; suppose there is a power failure in the middle of transaction; would the table corruption possibility is lower than if the tables are open as well?     - Newbie Control Subclassing Question Thanks in advance for the help. I'm still new to subclassing controls and I have what I believe is a very simple question. Where does the class code go so that I can use the new control on a form. For learning purposes I wrote a very simple variation of the label class that responds to the click event by reverting the colors. I'm putting the code here because it is short and I hope someone will tell me if I'm doing something silly.     - row(), col(), top, and left Hello All and thank in advance for the help. I'm sure that some of you know that you can use both @ SAY and ? inside of a window for writing information. The functions Row() and Col() also continue to work in VFP so that you can tell where in the window you are. My question is: Is there a way to convert the values returned by Row() and Col() into values that will work for the Top and Left properties of a control. I've tried the assumption that a 25 by 80 character window is translated into a 640 x 480 pixel window but things aren't going where they belong when I use: oObject.Top = Row() * 20 oObject.Left = Col() * 8 I could probably figure this out by trial and error but if there is a formula or algorithm that someone knows I'd appreciate hearing about it.     - DBF and DBT extensions I exported a table from MS Access into a DBF. It has 2 fields, one of which is a memo field. I'm going to have to import the DBF into a FoxPro database on Monday. When I exported, MS Access created two files, a DBF and a DBT file. What is the DBT for? Am I going to have issues when I try to import into FoxPro? I did a search and it appears the DBT is contains the memo field which could make some sense. The DBF is 5K and the DBT is 205K.     - Indirect Object Reference Suppose I need to dynamically create a series of objects and set their properties at run-time. What is the syntax I would use. For example lets suppose that under certain conditions that might occur while I'm scanning a database, I would like to create a label on a form and set its properties. For convenience (and uniqueness) I'm going to name the objects based on the record number in the database.     - AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft Instant Messaging Does anyone know of / have experience with libraries or ActiveX controls for instant messaging? It appears to me from a brief search that there are several available for Microsoft IM but I haven't been able to find any or AOL IM. One ActiveX control I found from LionKnight Software appears to support IM, File Transfer, or String Transfer. These would all be very useful to me. Does anyone have any experience with this product.     - import into memo field I live in an MS Access world. I need to import data into a FoxPro DBF table. I got the following feedback from the creator of that table. Before I get into this, is there anything special I should know? Will an Access memo field export to a DBase III DBF file and import into the FoxPro DBF memo field without issue? ------------------------------------------------ The problem is going to be that Foxpro sees the Memo field in that DBF as a true "memo" field.     - Fox with VB6 Error.. or not?? I am currently trying to insert a line into a foxpro table using VB6. When I run the insert statement, no error is generated but the line is never inserted. Also, If I open the table and then try to insert, there is still no error (I would expect one since the table is opened by me at that time). Does anyone know what might cause this?     - VFP and SQL I have a customer, whose network I support. Windows SBS2K server (Dual P4 xenon with 2 Gigabyte ram) with 5 W2KPro (P4 2.0 or better w/512 meg ram) workstations. They are using a Visual Foxpro application, database loaded on server, application loaded on workstations. The users have noticed that as more clients log on to application the performance slows. 500 megabyte database. When 1 or 2 users are accessing the program they both are satisfied with the performance. As additional users log on to application performance slows. Most complaints are in look ups or finding records (maybe the index takes to long) The program vendor is suggesting that my customer upgrade to the SQL ($7500.00)version of the program.     - Putting Formatted Text into Email I am using Word automation to open a document, edit the formatted text, and somehow email it to a recipient list I have in a DBF. I have created an Outlook.application item but can't figure out how to paste the formatted text into it (there is no 'paste' method in the Outlook object model). Announcing here formally (insert mental drum roll here)... the next version of Visual FoxPro from Microsoft, code named Europa, will be named Visual FoxPro 9.0. Visual FoxPro 9.0 is scheduled to be released during the second half of this year. Announcing the official name of the next version of Visual FoxPro now will allow upcoming articles, conferences, events, etc. to freely use the name Visual FoxPro 9.0 instead of the Europa code name. Oh, beta! This coming June, Microsoft will release a public beta version of Visual FoxPro 9.0 on msdn.com for anyone world-wide to download and install for free! Life is like a box of Visual FoxPro 9.0 We have recently started the process with the packaging and branding group within Microsoft to create the product box for Visual FoxPro 9.0. I was a contributing author and editor of FoxTalk during the early days of GenScrnX and the new object-oriented features of Visual FoxPro 3.0. The publishers of FoxTalk, Ragan Communications (which acquired Pinnacle Publishing 15 months ago), have recently been making some big decisions concerning FoxTalk. After talking with the FoxTalk team at Ragan, we've come up with a plan to make the publication better than ever. FoxTalk welcomes to the team David Stevenson who is an experienced technical editor. Additionally, FoxTalk will now include a monthly column submitted by the VFP team at Microsoft called "Tips from the VFP Team", to give an insider's view of how to get the most from VFP. I spoke at a general session to almost 200 attendees, most of whom were FoxPro developers who have not yet upgraded to Visual FoxPro 8.0 but who plan to do so soon with the new release of AccountMate 6.5. It was stressed in AccountMate's keynote presentation that Visual FoxPro 8.0 played a significant role in AccountMate's new version 6.5 release. Most people (including the press) at the conference were amazed what AccountMate has done in the user interface using Visual FoxPro 8.0. The event made the news for Accounting Technology , which has 30,000 readers with 3 times that via pass along rate. AccountMate and AccPac are now both owned by the same parent company, see the article Best Strikes Again. A case of FoxPro identity We have several new case studies highlighting solutions based on Visual FoxPro 8.0 submitted to the case study team at Microsoft which are currently in the process of being posted on the Microsoft web site. These case studies will be targeting non-developers such as IT managers, decision makers, and executives. When the upcoming case studies on Visual FoxPro 8.0 are added to the Microsoft case studies web site, we will also make sure that the proper announcements go out about them in various Microsoft newsletters such as MSDN Flash, just like what occurs for Visual Studio and other case studies announced.     - Foxpro 2.6w under XP database access issues I have been testing out using a legacy 2.6w app on XP boxes and have been encountering "Not A Table/DBF" error messages which are temporary and incorrect. But i don't know why my windows appears only if i set it to 'As top level form'. My machine is getting old and runs at 450 mz using Windows 98.     - Running Fox Exe's from a local network, VFP5.0 vs VFP6 - 8 I have several small office applications written in Foxpro. Years ago I bought some of them up from Foxpro 2.6 & FPW 3.x into the what was then the newest 'Foxpro', 5.x, and then wrote a few more apps. When later on 6.0 had been out for a while I tried to move up to that version. To that point all I had to do when distributing an application was to put the exe, two Dlls, DBFs and a few other files in a directory on the local network protected by the appropriate NT security. Then put an shortcut on the users desktop pointing that exe. With lots of changes in our office responsibilties this is easy to connect new workstations to these apps. With 6.0 that all changed to have to setup the apps on each computer even though the exe and dbfs could be shared on the network. This is what I had to do with VB apps (which is one among other reasons I didn't use VB alot). I tried to putting all the files the 6.0 setup wizard was putting on each computer on the network in the exe's directory but it didn't work. I guess this is because of the files not being registered properly in the setup. I was hoping that Foxpro would just look for these files in that directory first without checking the registry The upshot of all this is that all the apps are still on 5.x . I suppose that I could set up one VFP 6.0 app on each workstation and then as long as the rest of the apps used the same componets they would not require an individual setup. routine to trap all such errors - I would like to trap them and disable the
excel automation??
