Hello,

We have one Exchange 2000 SP3 server on Windows 2000 (the first
Exchange server which we ever installed) and two Exchange 2003 SP2
servers on Windows 2003 R2 SP2. For legacy reasons, Exchange is still
in mixed-mode. None of the servers are configured as front-end
servers.

Some users are using EAS and Windows Mobile 6.0 to sync their
mailboxes on the two E2K3 servers and we'd like to install the
Exchange ActiveSync Mobile Administration Web Tool for security
reasons.

Does anyone know please if the presence of the Exchange 2000 server or
the fact that Exchange is in mixed-mode will cause problems? We're
uncertain because the MS download page for the tool mentions that it's
only for E2K3 or E2K7 environments.

Also, where should the tool be installed, on both E2K3 servers or just
one? Can the tool on one E2K3 server see the EAS users on another E2K3
server?

Thanks,

- Alan.

According to the ActiveSync Admin site:

System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008
The Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync Web Administration Tool must be
installed on an Exchange Server running Internet Information Server 6. The
Exchange Server must be part of the domain to be administered. To function
properly, the tool must be used in conjunction with Exchange Server 2003
Service Pack 2 and compatible mobile devices.

"Fortunately, you don't have to completely move off earlier versions of
Exchange to get ActiveSync for your users. Exchange 2003 is perfectly happy
to use ActiveSync to serve mailboxes in a mixed-mode Exchange organization,
although you will need to update the organization with Exchange 2003's schema
changes. In conjunction with a separate DNS name space, using a separate
server gives you an easy way to pilot ActiveSync: Add an Exchange 2003
server, publish its SSL port through your firewall, and set up a separate DNS
name."

Hopefully this provides some help,

Thanks Chris, much appreciated.

Exchange ActiveSync is working quite happily in my mixed-mode and E2K3-
with-an-E2K-server environment. I'm just worried that installing the
EAS web admin tool might break something on the E2K server.

It's a web app, an interface to the non IPM subtree for Exchange mailboxes.
It doesn't change the AD schema or the DBs or the Exchange bin files. I see
no reason why I would break anything. What concerns you in particular?

Thanks Peter. It's just that the wording of the MS download site
mentions "Exchange 2003 SP2 only deployments". The mailboxes on our
E2K server are accessed by Macs using Entourage (i.e. HTTP WebDAV) so
I was worried that adding the tool to one of the E2K3 servers might
break that in some way.

I have added the tool in a test environment without problems. Sorry if
all sounds silly but I'm a contract worker and naturally paranoid...

Just to say that I installed the tool on one of the E2K3 servers it's
working without problems.

Thanks to everyone.
