I am running Exchange 2003 on one server - no front end/back end or no
proxy server.
I would like to be able to set up several users to access from home
using Outlook 2003 or 2007, where they can see all messages, contacts,
etc., from their home computers.
Can I do this with my current setup?
If so, any suggestions?
Thanks-

Most certainly you can. I am going to point you to a Deployment Scenario
link which covers your scenario and a link for setting up the client. Post
back if you have any further questions.

Having everything on a single box is not a problem. A good place to start

Sorry, this got shoved to the back burner for a little while!
When trying to set up the Outlook client, under the 'Exchange Server
Settings' part, it tells me:
"The action could not be completed. The connection to the Exchange
server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete
this action"
I have set everything up on the exchange side & opned port 143 on the
firewall.
What am I doing wrong?

Please read this article again,
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/outlookrpchttp.html

"It is important to note that you must create the Outlook 2003 profile while
the Outlook 2003 computer is on the internal network, or while the Outlook
2003 computer is on the Internet and can access the Exchange Server using
RPC (TCP 135 - typically through an ISA Server 2000 secure Exchange RPC
Publishing rule). You will not be able to create a new profile or change an
existing profile to use RPC over HTTP if is does not have access to the
Exchange Server via RPC (TCP 135).

This bears repeating: you will not be able to create a new Outlook profile
when the Outlook client is not on the internal network and can access the
Exchange Server using RPC via TCP 135. In addition, a user with an existing
profile will not be able to alter the existing profile so that it can use
RPC over HTTP if that client is not located on the internal network and can
access the Exchange Server using TCP 135. The Outlook 2003 profile must be
configured to use RPC over HTTP while that machine is connected to the
internal network and can access the Exchange Server via TCP port 135."

Some time that isn't possible, as I have a couple of people a few
hundred miles away from the office.
If I was connected via a SonicWall VPN client, could I set the profile
up then?
If not would IMAP or POP3 be a better way to go?

If Outlook can connect to the mailbox server through the VPN, yes.

>If not would IMAP or POP3 be a better way to go?

That depends on what you expect. Calenders, free/busy time, etc.?
Nope, you won't get those. Syncing contacts? Nope won't get that,
either.

So I could connect once to initially set it up & then take the VPN
client off?
