We have some service that sends updates, it can send the updates in various
languages, sometimes with country specific chacters, and they will show up as
corrupted characters, usually as squares or question marks. We never had
this issue with 5.5 Internet Mail Connector.
I noticed that if I use Outlook Express, the mail same content does not get
corrupted, but this could be html email thing as opposed however this other
service is encoding the text.
I'm guessing 5.5 just converted the text into english equivalents (I'm
helping support an issue that I don't know the complete history of). I just
know it worked somehow better with 5.5 than it does with 2007.
