Iâ??m running out of places to look and narrowed it down (I think) to something
not set up correctly in exchange 2000-??-. If I send an email out with an
attachment, the internet slows to a crawl on the intranet until the email is
finished going out. Sometimes for as long as 1 hr depending on how big the
attachment is and how many people it was sent to. My latency jumps up to
1500-1700ms from a normal 20-30ms. Did a speed test at dslreports while it
was sending and it goes down to 300/100 from a Downstream: 3552 Upstream: 384
DSL connection. ISP switched out the DSL router yesterday thinking it might
be that but didnâ??t help. If I send out an email using Outlook Express using a
standard pop account and bypassing exchange, latency only goes up to
200-300ms and the internet is normal. Iâ??m running out of things to try and
was wondering if anyone has any ideal of where else to look.

Thanks
Jason

Is this only happening when sending to external recipients? In other words,
if you send the mail with attachment to local user then it arrives within
seconds?

From that description I would conclude that your connection isn't fast
enough.

Yes, internal email is fine. Doesn't mess with the internet at all and gets
there in seconds.

Kind of what you would first think. It's a pretty solid business DSL line and
if that was the case, outlook express would knock it out with the same
attachment but it doesn't.
Even uploading files to an external computer doesn't affect it much. I
uploaded a 100mb file this morning to our web server with no problems. Just
the emails going out through exchange knock it out. Very strange. I also
tried switching over to a clean fractional T1 (256/256) just to test on with
the same result. Although latency didnâ??t jump quite as high, it was still
over 1,000ms.

What about limit bandwith for outgoing smtp with QoS ?

Have you looked at a network trace or SMTP protocol logging to see if
anything funny might be going on?

The only one that I've played with was Windows SBS built in NETMON but it
really doesn't show me anymore then there is SMTP traffic and it's outbound.
I may not be looking in the right place.

Iâ??m at home responding so I canâ??t check my terminology. I have set SMTP rules
and set them to low priority but it doesnâ??t seem to affect anything. Not sure
about the QoS. Iâ??ll have to check exactly where I set it tomorrow. Iâ??ve ran
pretty deep into the trees of the admin panel trying different things. Some
of the settings looked promising but I was unsure of so I left them alone.
I even went as far as buying a dual wan switch and trying to segregate the
SMTP traffic out through our frac T1 leaving internet and VPN service on the
DSL, but had too many problems trying to get that to work and gave up on it.
