Internal Org Mail Routing

Hi all,

I have 2 messaging org, 1 is based on exchange 2007 [target] and another on
2003 [source]. Both orgs have the same Primary SMTP address e.g. abc.org. I
have added additional SMTP addresses of target.org in ex2007 and source.org
in ex 2003 org.

Now, I can send email from source to target using target user's secondary
address e.g. USER 1@target.org and email routes just fine. The problem
occurs in repliability, if I add the option of 'read receipt' or 'delivery
receipt', the source user never gets any of the receipts. Also, when the
target user replies to the email that was send by source on 'target.org'
address, the source user's address shows as User b@abc.org. But the when the
target user replies to the email from source, it does not route it back to
source. I guess since the address shows up as abc.org, exchange tries to
look up the 'user b@abc.org' in target exch 2007 org. Shouldn't exchange in
target org route the mail based on secondary smtp of source.org since primary
SMTP is similar in both orgs?

Any suggestions??

Hi Jason, it sounds like both Exchange orgs are authoritative for the
namespace abc.org, so if they don't find the recipient in their local GAL
they don't look elsewhere. A good article on sharing address spaces is:

That article is for Exchange 2003, so it will only address half of your
problem. Based on the names below, are you doing a migration and trying to
establish coexistence mailflow while the migration is taking place?

Thanks for your response.
Yes, I am migrating [or setting a stage for migration] from 2 legacy e2k3
orgs to e2k7 org. All three orgs will be authoritative for 'abc.org'
namespace for internal mail routing/forwarding purposes. The legacy exch org
[one of them] will be getting all the inbound internet mail during
coexistence period. After migration, i will flip external internet mail
routing [inbound/outbound] to e2k7.

You are right, that since both the orgs [e2k3 & 7] are auth for smtp
namespace 'abc.org', they look in their own org for reply address and thats
it. The solution may be to add Contact objects from e2k3 to e2k7 and vice
versa for the coexistence period. Or another solution may be to populate the
'targetAddress' attribute on the mailboxes. Your thoughts....
