What would be the recommended amount of memory that should be installed
on an Exchange 2000 server running on Windows 2000 server (both
standard) with 525 mailboxes? I currently have 1 GB installed and was
wondering if adding more would help performance. Thanks!

You can use up to 4GB of ram in Exchange 2000/2003.
Its cheap enough at those levels to recommend that you put in 4GB.

I heard or read somewhere that going over 1 GB could cause problems with
virtual memory or fragmentation of the page file. Is this true and if
so, is there a work around to this issue? Thanks for you help.

The best solution is to upgrade to Exchange 2003/Windows 2003 or
Exchange 2007. Really. The memory management is vastly improved in
these newer versions and Exch 2000 is of course no longer supported.

But if you can't, then you may want to check out this old webcast that
addresses Exch 2000 memory issues:

I upgraded the memory, do I need to change any setting to make exchange
take advantage of the additional ram?

Run Exchange best practice analyzer; it will make suggestions on
memory tweaks based on what you have.
