    - Data Validation List will not Fill Down I am using data validation lists on a large spreadsheet. I have one list populated from a series of data I specify. I then use the INDIRECT function to call the list for my second drop down box based on the data in the first box. When I copy the cells, the formula in the Source box in the data validation screen does not increment to maintain the proper reference (it stays at C2 instead of updating to C3, C4 etc...)     - Max/min functions similar to SUMIF Hello, I am trying to set up a standard test form for some data. The way the data will normally be presented/entered will be like a frequency distribution as such: 172.60 50 172.70 63 172.80 26 172.90 0 173.00 11 173.10 0 I want to have a block that presents the info in a nutshell - min, max, range, mode, average, stdev of the above array. So far I have the average and stdev part working (thanks Wigi!), and the range is simple max minus min... what I am trying to figure out is how to calculate the max and min. If the first and last values in column A were non-zero, it'd be simple. As it is... I'm trying to figure out how to implement max() when the last couple listed entries may have zero count. It looks like sumif works about like what I want - i.e. count a cell value only if it meets a certain parameter. I would think that some form of if() statement would be in order, but I'll be darned if I could make it work the first couple go-arounds. Any help or advice would be greatly welcomed.     - No Workbook at Startup When I start up Excel (2003), no workbook is opening. I have identified that this has something to do with a hidden workbook that I have created and placed in Excel's XLSTART folder. This file, XXStartup.xls is hidden and acts like PERSONAL.XLS. It is used to deploy custom toolbars to users without overwriting their own PERSONAL.XLS. I have placed XXStartup.xls in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART I prefer this location as it means the macros execute seamlessly without having to redirect the macro paths if I used: C:\Documents and Settings\{userID}\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel \XLSTART The Excel11.xlb file is placed in the user's profile path (in the Excel folder, one up from XLSTART in the path above). Regardless of which XLSTART folder I put XXStartup.xls in (and I have tried both), no workbook opens automatically on startup. As soon as I remove the file from XLSTART, Excel's behaviour returns to normal. I have read other posts suggesting removing the " /e" switch from the command line for Excel, but this has had no effect. Any suggestions are appreciated.     - Vlookup data and numeric OK- What I have is an xls file with 2 worksheets (200 and availability) . The formula I'm using is: =vlookup($b3:$b202,availability!$A2:$B437,2,False) '200' B3-B202 a 3 letter code 'Availability' A2-b437 is data(in A) and numeric(in B) What I want the look up to do is return the numeric value from the availability sheet to the corrosponding 3 letter code in the 200 worksheet The data in 200 is static, however the data in availability is copied and pasted from another xls file in to the availability worksheet.     - Is this a bug in Excel 2007? I am trying to do countdown calculations. The numbers look good except my months are off by one in the display. If I calculate =now()-now() I get 1/0/00 0:00 (US date time format). If I subtract 7/22/08 9:00 from 7/31/08 9:00 I get 1/8/00 0:00 and there is obviously not a month and 8 days difference. I did a count up timer from my date of birth and my birthday...on my birthday I will be 30/12/31 ...okay I can see that. The day after I will be 31/1/1 I thought about the "There is no 0 month" however, it does calculate a 0 year AND a 0 day. Plus this is a calculation of how much time has gone by...0 months have gone by. If some one knows the fix (or can confirm this is a bug) i would appreciate it.     - Excel lack of compatibility How come i am having such a hard time keeping excel 2007 from crashing. Any time i am using .xls files or a chrat or have more than one file open that uses a circular reference it just dies. WTF. This is supposed to be easier to use, more friendly, more stabile, but i have found it to be the opposite. However i have been using it long enough i am proficient with the ribbon and have almost forgotten how to use 2003. But i can't work if i crash it all the time, plus simple things like changing the decimal place of a chart label can't be done with the tools anymore you have to open the axis open and format it. WTF would the make it less functional than the already had it. I would like to combine 2003 with the ribbon of 2007. but that isn't going to happen. So maybe some one can tell me if i am missing something and how to get more functionality out of office 2007 instead of less. Also if anyone has some insight into keeping Office from exploding any time i try to use an iterative calculation, have a chart with more than 10 points, or use older .xls files at the same time. Plus when i work on it in 2007 and my boss proofs what i do in 2003 (because he refueses to switch) all the formats and text boxes are messed up beyond belief. spend 3 days googling but can't find any help suggestions or solutions.     - Pivot Table If I have a large database that starts with 1/1/2005, I have a pivot table set up that shows an Assigned Detective, and the total of Offenses he has assigned. This works where I can select the det from the drop down and it automatically gives the total of each offense that he was assigned. Have called it Auto_Open and it should open automatically for any Excel file. The need is as follows.     - Formula to return column letters In Excel 2007, I need to use the letters of the column that I am in in the formula bar. However, I don't need a particular cell, just the letters. Because of this, the letters do not change as I use Autofill down the row. I am using over 500 columns, so I really need for Autofill to do this for me.     - Refer to adjacent cells as variables in formula In a large column of data some cells randomly have entries of "no data"- (caused by a comms failure at that time). I'd like to interpolate data for these cells by filling them with actual values in cells either above or below them. My problem is that I don't know how to refer to a cell as 'the cell above this one' or 'the cell below this one', as a variable instead of as a specific cell location.     - Save as CSV results in an Excel file!? Windows XP, Excel 2003 I have a user who I am helping remotely. They have a small Excel file - about 12 rows. They do a Save As and select "CSV (comma delimited) (*.csv)" as the file type, then click Save. Oddly, they do not receive the usual warning about "features not compatible...", however the file is saved and appears to be a CSV file with the appropriate extension. When this file is opened in Notepad to check it out, it clearly is *not* a CSV file - all special characters and gobbledegook. In fact, the contents look just like a standard Excel file (XLS). I cannot reproduce this odd outcome on my own system. When I save as a CSV, I get the expected warning and the resulting file looks like a CSV file in my text editor. Is there some setting or option in Excel that would cause this behavior? Although these characters appear in print preview, they do not print on any of my printers -- only the English characters print. workbooks, and consolidating data.

Linking data will give you a dynamic link so that each time you change a
value in the other spreadsheet the linked spreadhseet will also update.

When you consolidate data the values are pasted without formulas so that
even though you change the values on the original sheet they won't change on
the new one, until you re-consolidate.

Also consolidating is a little easier to select the data, rather than
creating formulas.
