    - Pivot Table If I have a large database that starts with 1/1/2005, I have a pivot table set up that shows an Assigned Detective, and the total of Offenses he has assigned. This works where I can select the det from the drop down and it automatically gives the total of each offense that he was assigned. Agg Assault 10, Burglary 15, etc. Is there a way I can do this for 2005, and then one for 2006, 2007 and 2008. I need a total for each year by itself. The problem is that this is a worksheet we keep adding to with each line depending on the date. One I have to copy 2005 to a sheet and then 2006, etc?     - Macro To Run Automatically For Any Worksheet Upon Opening Of THe F Hello! Have recorded a macro in person.xls that basically Auto fits the cells to show the full name of each column. Have called it Auto_Open and it should open automatically for any Excel file. The need is as follows. The user team team will double click on a csv file and they have associated csv file types with Excel, would like this macro to run for them and the questions follow. 1) First, prior to distributing the macro to other users, would like to make sure it works but having an issue getting it to Auto Open when any csv file is double clicked, the macro is not running, what might be missing here. Have to go to Tools - Macro - Macros, select Auto_Open and then run it, the macro is not running automatically when the csv file is opened, had assumed that calling it Auto_Open would do this. Currently working with Excel 2003 version. 2) How is the macro, Auto_Open, which was created locally, distributed to other users - possibly share it from a network location or send it to each member of the user team 3) How does a user install the macro so it works for them for any Excel file Have looked at some of the other reponses to similar topics in this forum but not totally understanding it yet.     - Formula to return column letters In Excel 2007, I need to use the letters of the column that I am in in the formula bar. However, I don't need a particular cell, just the letters. Because of this, the letters do not change as I use Autofill down the row. I am using over 500 columns, so I really need for Autofill to do this for me. Basically, in the formula bar, I have "A" in part of my formula (when I am in column A), but when I autofill, every column still has "A" rather than updating.     - Refer to adjacent cells as variables in formula In a large column of data some cells randomly have entries of "no data"- (caused by a comms failure at that time). I'd like to interpolate data for these cells by filling them with actual values in cells either above or below them. Can I create a formula that refers to cells either immediately above or below the cells? My problem is that I don't know how to refer to a cell as 'the cell above this one' or 'the cell below this one', as a variable instead of as a specific cell location.     - Save as CSV results in an Excel file!? Windows XP, Excel 2003 I have a user who I am helping remotely. They have a small Excel file - about 12 rows. They do a Save As and select "CSV (comma delimited) (*.csv)" as the file type, then click Save. Oddly, they do not receive the usual warning about "features not compatible...", however the file is saved and appears to be a CSV file with the appropriate extension. When this file is opened in Notepad to check it out, it clearly is *not* a CSV file - all special characters and gobbledegook. In fact, the contents look just like a standard Excel file (XLS). I cannot reproduce this odd outcome on my own system. When I save as a CSV, I get the expected warning and the resulting file looks like a CSV file in my text editor. Is there some setting or option in Excel that would cause this behavior?     - East Asian characters in Excel 2003 worksheet do not print. I have an Excel 2003 worksheet that contains East Asian (Simplified Chinese) characters. Although these characters appear in print preview, they do not print on any of my printers -- only the English characters print. However, the Chinese characters print from Word 2003 documents and from PDFs of the Excel worksheet. My operating system is Win XP Pro. I have installed the files for East Asian Language support.     - Macro to Fit AutoShape over Range? It seems to me that inserting and manipulating AutoShapes is incredibly straightforward in Excel, but users of a form in our office have asked if there's a way to more quickly make rectangles that would EXACTLY cover whatever range of cells they have selected. (This is all the more annoying of a request, because most of the users are on Excel for Mac, whose Formatting Palette makes this sort of thing even easier.) Anyway: can a macro be written that will do this? I'm imagining that, after a user left-clicks and drags through any area, that they'll right-click, select the macro from the shortcut menu, and the code will plop a rectangle over the area. (I already have a number of custom options on the shortcut menu, so that I can do that part myself.) I know this is all absurd, but any help anyone can offer would be much appreciated!     - Default Save Extension Posted in another excel newsgroup 7/11/08 but no solution: I'm using Office Home and Student 2007 on a Vista Home Premium machine. I'm unable to change the default save extension from xlsx to xls. I can do it on an individual file by file basis but I would like to have the program always save the files to a default extension of xls. I've changed the setting in Excel Options and the setting "sticks" but the program continues to create and save as xlsx. I also have the same problem in Word. Any help is much appreciated!     - Error message - Errors were detected while saving FILENAME In Excel 2007, when saving a file, we get the following message... "Errors were detected while saving FILENAME. Excel may be able to save the file by removing or repairing some features" If we click continue, it gives us the file selection screen to "save as" Press enter, and we get "The file already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" If click "yes", the next message is "No errors were detected in FILENAME. No repairs were necessary" Click OK and it saves the file.     - Cells not included in formulas I have a summary page that pulls numbers in based on account numbers from a detail spreadsheet. Column A is the account number, Column B is the amount on the detail spreadsheet. Is it possible to do some sort of trace function to see what numbers are not going into the summary worksheet?     - excel spreadsheet compare I looking for something I could utilize that would compare two excel spreadsheets. It would need to compare across all cells and note any changes. There will be text and numbers contained within the cells. I've seen some stuff posted on here, but it compares (I.E cell A1 to cell A1). The excel spreadsheets I'll be reviewing will have adds, updates and deletes. So it needs to compare based on a unique identifier (probably name in first column) and then note if there are any changes.     - Exporting Quickbooks Data into Excel When I run a report and export it into Excel, the file size is way larger than it should be.     - Timestamp for changes in any row of cells? Hi, I am trying to set up a timestamp at the end of a row of cells that will enter the current date if any cell in the row is altered or updated. I can only do it at present with one cell, if I use a range of cells the formula doesn't work, not sure why.     - Place zeros in blank cells I have set up an Excel spreadsheet that will be used to input a variety of data that will be imported into an Access database. The data is all numbers and the reports that I run in Access can't do the calculations on blank cells. There are usually 1500 records that are being imported and there are 9 columns that contain numbers, but not all will have a number entered. What I need to find out is how to setup this spreadsheet to automatically place a zero in all blank cells prior to importing without doing it manually.     - Cells won't automatically update --- urgent! Hello, We are having a problem with one of our excel templates at work, and we are on a tight deadline. The workbook is quite large....probably 50 to 80 sheets or so. Most of these sheets have been duplicated off of other sheets. The issue is that we have a bunch of valuation multiples linked to an assumptions page, and when we change the number on the assumptions page, the multiples do not update through out the template. We have tried a number of things. We have verified that the cells are set to automatic update in the options menu. We have also tried to go into a worksheet select all and hit F9, which you would think would update the cells. I have also, click on the specific that i want to update and hit F9, and nothing happens. The only way I can get the cell to update is if i put my cursor inside the cell, and hit enter. There is no way that I can go through every individual cell and update them manually like this. Plus we would not be too confident in the integrity of our template. I would consider myself a fairly advance user of excel, and I am quite familiar with using macros in visual basic. If anyone has an easy solution or a set of code that I can run that will update the template for me that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!     - Count I have a large spreadsheet dating back from 2006, is there a way I can search by a Detectives Name which is in Col K and then count the assigned offenses in Col G, example: Detective John Brown col k and then search col G, AA (Agg Assault) and give me a total for Agg Assault, then change col G for Burg (Burglary) and give me a total for Burglary, etc. I have been counting by doing a filter, but I felt there could be an easier way.     - Print Landscape/Portrait based on level of grouped data selected Probably not possible....but I have a spreadsheet I send to multiple clients where the rows are grouped on levels 1-5 (5 being the most specific of the data, therefore most rows). I have set up buttons (macro assigned) which they can use to print just their columns of data. The titles to the left of the data are repeating, so each individual macro is simply selecting the appropriate columns, setting print area, and printing. I find that levels 1, 2 & 3 of data look best when printed in Landscape. Levels 4 & 5 look best when printed in Portrait. Is there something that I can add to a Macro in order for it to print Portrait/Landscape based on the level of grouped rows selected? Thanks!     - Integrity of Column Headers I have created a company form in Excel. The form has several columns and each column has a one, two or three line column header. The form was designed to be viewed at 100% Zoom (the viewing tool in the Standard toolbar). Apparently some form users are viewing the form at 50% or 75%. When viewed at less than 100%, the lines in the column headers break in odd places, for example, when the view is reduced, the one-line header "Quantity" breaks into two lines: Quantit y and the two-line header "Catalog Page No." breaks into three lines: Catalo g Page No. Other than increasing the size of the cells the column headers are in, is there a way to freeze the headers so this odd line breaking won't happen? I tried un-selecting "Wrap Text" in the Format Cells/ Alignment/Text Control menu and this made the headers be one line and the entire header wouldn't display in the header cell, so that wasn't the answer I'm looking for. The first cell references C18, the next F18, the one after that I18 and so on i.e two cell are to be skipped to get to the next value I want.     - Preserved cell formatting We have an excell workbook that is linked to an extrenal SQL data source. The preserve cell formatting box is checked on the External Data Range Properties pop up. Randomly we will get cells were the format is being changed. The data fields that are being imported are text. The cell format is set to General and is being switched to Text. When this happenes the cell display all #######. I have been checking the data in the cells that this happens too for any odd charicters. (line feeds, char returns....)     - List Dependent Worksheet Functions I am creating a summarising worksheet that evaluates a list of numbers. The list of numbers is held in a column of adjacent cells called 'ListVal1'. I wish to evaluate the numeric cells in 5 possible ways as determined by the user - the analysis could be any one of SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX or COUNT. The user selects the analytical process by reference to a text value in a related cell - in this case cell 'B11'.     - LIST BOXES TOO WIDE I created several drop down list boxes to limit entries in several fields in a worksheet. Two fields are limited to "YES" and "NO." When I click on the down arrow which makes the list pop up, it is a good 3-4" wide, with the YES and NO at the far left of the box. It is quite annoying to have to move the mouse so far to click the appropriate choice. Is there some way to limit the width of the drop down box? I have an embedded Word Document in an Excel Worksheet that is 35 lines long.
I can open the Word page and view all of the lines, but I can only get 1/2
of the document to print when I print the worksheet. Any suggestions how I
can get the whole embedded document to print when I print the worksheet?

Try going to the print screen and selecting fit to page and then print. That
might work!

You can also go View: Page Break Preview to see the print boundaries and then
adjust the size of the graphic to fit.
