    - MS Query returning incomplete results Hi, Have been using Excel Queries for a while with no problems. Since last week, queries are coming back incomplete, returning blanks for cells that should have data. Have imported the data into Access and the queries work properly. Any suggestions ?     - Repeating garbage in excel file, need help At work we are using Excel 2000 and have a workbook that contains several grids. Each grid contains formulas to calculate averages and percentages. This month after the report was completed I saved it and printed out the grids. For unknown reasons after I saved it that day when I closed all the grids became formatted differently, general number cells became percentage cells and random numbers were put in place of data, I had to use last months report to correct the report. It's on a network drive and lots of people update it. I know that no one did this, it was some kind of corruption. The problem is it happens every month! The only way I've been able to stop it is to Protect the workbook and then protect the worksheet that I just made changes to and then save. If I don't, the cells mutate again.     - Email excel I have a 12 page workbook that is sent via email very often. To discourage clients from changing the workbook I convert it to PDF (with Easy PDF Writer) and sent it as an attachment. Works great... EXCEPT when the client will not accept emails with attachments. Anyone know of a way to add the PDF file into the email and not use it as an attachment? I have been able to "Snapshot" one page at the time.. paste each page into a word document and insert the word document in the body of the email.......but that takes a while.     - Slow Excel 2003 Hi all, I've recently upgraded from Office 97 to Office 2003. I'm running it on a notebook with a 1Ghz PIII processor and 512Mb ram. So I'm sure that I have enough system to operate it. The biggest gripe I have is when formatting a cell in Excel such as a simple alignment of text to the right, left or center of the cell there is a freeze up for almost 20 or 30 seconds.     - Highlighting duplicate entries I'm trying to highlight duplicate entries in a column. Right now, I'm using the formula found at http://www.cpearson.com/excel/duplicat.htm, which works as follows: My column has a column name in the first row (set to PartID). What I'm doing is highlighting the entire column, selecting Conditional Formatting, and using the equation =IF(COUNTIF(PartID, A2)>1,TRUE,FALSE) as the formula. A2 is the first cell that has data, the formatting is set to bold red, and all cells are set to General formatting. I've tried doing it numerous ways - I've tried highlighting all data cells but the column header, all data cells including the header, clicking on the A to highlight the whole column...nothing works. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?     - Another Macro Problem! (dave where are you!) Okay, You guys have helped me in the past, and I need you again. I am using Excel 2000. I have a worksheet that I saved as a template. The user opens the template and clicks a button that executes the macro. When the button is pushed the open box appears and you select the files that you need and hit open and then it opens the files one after anpther. When it finishes opening the files (up to 250) I click on the first page of my workbook "Summary". These is where is all the information is summarized from all of the 250 or so files that are now open in the workbook. I save this new file as DS092204 for daily summary and the date. Same thing tommorrow DS092304. NOW MY QUESTION I would like to use this same form and modify the macro so that instead of opening all 250 individual files I could just open the DS files and create a weekly summary. I can use this macro now to open the DS files, but all of the files (up to 250) that were used to create the DS open with it. That is too much and it takes to long. I also get the message about linked data etc. that I have to say ok to for it to continue with its calculation. I am hoping to modify this macro so that it will only open sheet one or in my case "Summary" of the DS files and then compute based on that information. I am not sure if this can be done or not since the Summary sheet of the DS files are calculated by having the 250 files open.     - Searching cells for hard coded data vs formulas Can anyone tell me how to define a Find query in cell which will fin all the cells in a sheet which have constants in them (i.e. =2, 2, A2+ etc).     - Set Focus I am using the Worksheet_SelectionChanged event to show a ComboBox on the selected cell so the user could select an item from the list, note that using datan validation didn't work because the worksheet zoom factor is 60%. Everything works fine except that when the combobox is shown the user could select either the box or cell, depending on how he clicks on the box. Is there a way of setting the focus onto the box?     - fill series I have a worksheet that has 8 columns and 105 rows. Each cell gets the data from another sheet in the workbook. I can't seem to be able to fill down the formula the way I need it. The first row in the first column gets the data from 'Daily Data'!A8, the second row would be 'Daily Data'!A18, third row 'Daily Data'!A28, and so forth. So each row needs to skip down 10 rows to get the next value. How can I do this by using fill series or the fill handles? I've tried both and can't seem to get it to work. I don't mind entering the formulae in the first couple of rows, but REALLY don't want to have to enter the formula 840 times! Thanks in advance for any advice.     - How do I hide an Option Button? Greetings ! Without going into unnecessary details as to why, I have written a macro which, among other tasks, hides 10 rows. Within these rows is an Option Button (created with the Control Toolbox under View Toolbars) which I also wish to hide. The rows hide without any problems, but the Option Button is still visible. Is there a way to hide an Option Button while hiding rows?     - Pulling out specific information Hello all, I have a rather sizable spreadsheet that I am working on, it is keeping track of my open and closed stock positions, as well as other things my group wants me to keep track of. anyway I have stocks listed across the top of the screen from column B-DR and I have dates listed in column A going straight down. Now I open a separate worksheet (within the same file) and I know how to type =max(XXX:YYY) for each stock to get its highest price and =min(XXX:YYY) to get its lowest price.     - Formatting database downloaded from internet Hi, all! I'd like to download into Excel a database from the internet. It's a list of newly formed business, with column headings being date filed, name, file #, and address. But the address ends up in two rows for each record - the first row has the street address, and the next row has the city, state and zip. I'd like to have the city, state, zip cell show up in the column to the right of the street address, instead of in the row underneath. Another complication is that it looks like the other fields - date, name, file # all take up two rows, because the two rows have been merged together - probably because the address is set up to take up two rows...... I'd like to format these fields so that they only take up one row, too, please. Any suggestions, please? I am secreatry of a semi vol local water supply group for about 450 customers and filling out the bi monthly invoices is rather tedious and time consuming to say the least .     - Auto updating links. I am looking for a fairly simple solution to build a Powerpoint presentation which will, for the most part display data from linked Excel workbooks. The source workbooks will be located on a shared server directory and updated by multiple users (although probably only one user for each Excel file). The presentation will be set up to switch slides automatically on a timer, and to loop at the end. The idea is to have the presentation run on a seperate PC from the users handling data entry but to automaticaly update the data displayed from the source files each time a slide is displayed.     - Question about locale in formulae The CFO of our German location uses a US laptop with US Excel 2003. When he emails a spreadsheet with some complex formulas using things like End of Month, the expression used in US is not the same as German. When he receives a file from the German accounting office, they use their expressions on their German Excel spreadsheets which don't work properly on the US Excel 2003. Is there a way to get these spreadsheets to "learn" each locales' expressions and finctions or do we need to install the US version of Excel on the German computers and then add German in the Office Language settings tool?     - copyFile in visual basic for applications Hi, I want to just do a simple copy action using visual basic for application in excel. In a directory I have some file that need to be copied by time. Most of the files have the extinction .dat (like file1.dat, file2.fat..etc...). And there are two files with a different name and extinction. The rest of the file are not to be copied. For the file with a specific name, I wanted to use this sub code: Sub copy_my_ files() fileSystem.FileCopy("c:\tmp\file.txt","c:\backup\file.txt") End Sub But when I leave the row when the fileCopy code is on, I get the following error:"Compile error: Expected: =" How come?? When I did a first test I probably wrote it slightly different, because I did manage to make a copy this way.     - irritating hidden hotkey Hi, I am experimenting with hotkeys in Excel. Most of the time a key-combination doesn't result immediately in something visible or handy. But now I have come across a hot that is really disturbing. By pressing the tab-key excel normally selects the next column. Now, however excel selects the first column out of the monitor-window.     - edit fill series Excel 2000 question: I can never predict whether series will work or not. Example: I take a fresh new worksheet and type the number 1 in cell a1, then 2 in a2. I grab these two cells, drag downward and get a series 1 2 3 4 etc. OK. Taking that same fresh new worksheet, I can also put the number 1 in a cell, go to edit/fill/series and that works fine too. When I take my old well worn worksheets that I also use as templates, the above things don't work (or sometimes may work). If I type the number 1 in cell a1, then 2 in a2, then grab these two cells and drag downward, I get 1 1 1 1 1, no series. And, if I put the number 1 in a cell, and go to edit/fill/series, series is grayed out. Obviously, my established spreadsheets contain something that is preventing series from working. a.     - Count with multiple condition Hi all I want to get the count of rows from A1:A20 where the value is greater than 10 and smaller than 20. I know I could do it by =countif(A1:A20, "<20") - countif(A1:A20, "<=10") But I want to do it within one function (nested functions are ok with me like f(g,h)) like: =countif(A1:A20, "<20 and >10") I've tried =countif(A1:A20, and("<20", ">10")) and it doesn't work, a little search on the google turns out that countif can only have one simple condition within it. And it says that I should use something called array function to do it. I don't really understand it. Could any of you help me?     - Easy way to reference a specific cell in a new worksheet This project is for week over week sales. A new worksheet is added every week. The current week's sales are in Column E for every salesperson and the previous week's sales are in Column F. I would like the Column F to automatically reference Column E on the previous worksheet every time a new worksheet is added by copying the previous worksheet.     - 45 Degree Angled Text & Fill Option I have Excel 2003 (11.6355.6360) running on XP and I'm wondering if this is a bug or not. If you have text in the first Row and you set it to 45 degrees angled, if you try and fill different cells with different fill colors, sometimes the box will fill angled, othertimes straight up and down. As a simple test, try creating a blank worksheet and make the first 3 columns 35 each in width and 100 in height. The type some text in each of the cells - not too much. Now select all 3 cells and format their alignment to 45 degrees. Now pick each one of the cells and fill each with a different color. It's driving me nuts and I want this to work soooo bad for a critical doc I'm working on - but it looks ugly as hell because some are angled and others are straight up and down (like it's conforming to still being a rectangle vs. a paralleogram now for shape. seems to lose the quotes "" around fields.

deanfp,

If you're opening the csv file with Excel, it will not show the quotation
marks, unless they were originally in the cells, in which case double quote
marks (pairs of them) would be around the fields. See
www.smokeylake.com/excel/textfiles.htm. for more on how this works.
