    - Web Query I am currently running a macro that initiates a web query on a https site that contains mixed content (both secure and non secure items) the query keeps failing because the warning message "This site contains both secure and non secure items. Do you want to display the non secure items?" prevents the query from proceeding. Any ideas on a work around? Is there a way to turn the warning messages off I have tried adjusting settings in IE however this does not appear to turn the warning message off in excel.     - Saving data to Jpeg or gif I'm trying to save a large block of Excel data as an image file. I have tried copying the data and pasting into "Paint" and then saving as an image. This works...but some data disappears in the strangest way. Very strange. All of the data gets copied but some is missing when you look at the image.     - Question on LABEL Range In a LABEL Range(say that it has 12 elements row-wise), how do one refer to the 4th elements? I have this ideas that in a worksheet, I have 12 rows single column LABELED range called MONTHS, where 1st elements is JAN(that is C6), and so on, and last element would be DEC(C17).     - vba coding I have a test tool that generates a 1079 row x 13 column csv file and I would like to automate its conversion into a spreadsheet we use to analyze it. The tool takes samples for different areas and has an id# associated with that area in one column. Some areas require two samples, others require ten. I would like to take the row associated with an id# and sum the data in columns 9-13 and place the sum in a column and row on another worksheet. If the next row of data in the csv file has the same id# I'd like to sum the data as before and place it in the next column over. Something like: =IF('import here'!$D1='data conv'!$A4,SUM('import here'!$I1:$M1)) then skip down one row in 'import here' =IF('import here'!$D2='data conv'!$A4,SUM('import here'!$I2:$M2)) On a false condition it needs to increment the sample id# & check the next row down in the 'import here'.     - stop update link messages I have a workbook I received (via email) from someone we buy from, I take that workbook and edit it to be able to send individual sheets to my customers. Problem is, original workbook creator has links from other workbooks on his machine When I open the workbook it asks me do I want to update the links. Well I couldn't if I wanted to because I don't have the workbooks its asking about. How do I get rid of these warnings.     - Excel 2000 zero-size window? Running Excel 2000 under Win98, the standard (non-maximised) Window size seems to have become zero. In other words, when starting Excel either by running excel.exe (from shortcut or directory display) or by clicking on an .XLS file, an entry appears in the taskbar, but no window opens on the screen. Right- clicking on the taskbar entry and clicking Restore does nothing. Clicking Maximize works properly. It is as if the normal window size has become 0 x 0. On trying to Restore the Maximized window, the window disappears again. An alternative description: Excel in what should be a normal window behaves as if minimized. It can be Maximized, but Restore is the same as Minimize. It can be made to work full-screen or not at all.     - Trouble with "MatchRequired" in XL visual basic Hi all I have to use the MatchRequired property to limit what can be entered into the spreadsheet via the form I have set up. The problem is that when an entry to put into the form combobox that is not present in the dropdown menu, I get the message "Inval property value". THE PROBLEM(s) The field is not highlighted to display to the user that it is the field they just entered that is wrong, i.e. it does not set focus. The message is not that clear - it sounds too techi for a basic user of XL - can I chnage it ?? If the entry is deleted then it still comes up with the error message even though their is a blank as an option in the dropdown. i.e "" is coded into to reflect a blank - is this different than deleting or backspacing??     - Large Dimensions rendering in PIVOT Tables issue Hi. I have an OLAP Cube Design <to> Excel Pivot Table rendering issue here. Our fact table is composed of sales transactions from a website. We routinely take a relatively small number (say 10,000) of these transactions and load them into Excel, where we create a PivotTable. (No OLAP used in this portion....just data right well below the 65k rec max loaded into a worksheet from SQL SERVER) Let's say it looks something like this: http://home.comcast.net/~murdockdesign/PivotOlap.jpg (*screenshot of pseudo Pivot table) **Note that we are using the transactionID (TxID) as a dimension. We want to support this kind of report in an OLAP cube so that we can build the same kind of report against much bigger fact tables. (say 1,000,000+ transactions.) The problem we run into is that Analysis Services (and perhaps OLAP in general) doesn't like dimensions that have millions of members, which is what happens when we let TxID be a dimension in our cube, since each TxID is (of course) unique. In our reading, we've seen that it's a bad idea to let dimensions have more that a few thousand members, and one reason stated is because "users can't easily comprehend a report with that many members." However, we don't typically create big reports. We use the other dimensions in the pivot to filter down the result set so that the resulting PivotReport is only a few pages long containing a few hundred TxID's. We've tried using Automatic Grouping on the huge TxID dimension, but it times out when trying to retrieve the Member Count (we have set SQL SERVER TimeOut Property to 0). We are clear on the fact that a large dimension is considered bad design practice, however we have a real business need to render our data in this way. We would appreciate it if anyone could suggest a way of creating this report in Excel against a data set with millions of unique transaction ID's? Thanks! Tag: Splitting a Cell Tag: 51308

    - shared .xls is locked for editing... We have a "shared" Excel 2000 spreadsheet that various users can access. Whenever one particular user has it open, and another user attempts to open it, it always says that a completely different user (other than who actually has it open) has it open for editing. Today for instance, this particular user I am referring to above had it open ("jnewitt"). Another user ("slockwood") attempted to open the spreadsheet as well using her Win2K terminal services session, and was told that the file was locked for editing by user "slockwood" - the same user who was attempting to open it in the first place. Clearly incorrect reporting by Excel! I made sure she did not have a lock on it at all by checking system resources on teh Win2K server etc... and she did not. I finally discovered who actually did have the file open and it was the "problem" user referred to above. Why would Excel always be reporting the wrong username for this user? Where is Excel actually obtaining the username that has the file open from?? We have had problems with this user before - but only this user!!!. It will never give his username if he has it open - it is always a different username. Usually it shows as "draft4" - a user that does not even exist on our systems any longer!!! This user runs an XP Professional machine (upgraded from WIn98) and logs onto it locally using his username "jnewitt". Like I said earlier, anytime he has a spreadsheet open and another user attempts to open the same one, they always get a message that "user draft4 has it open for editing" - of course draft4 does not even exist as a user - and is not a local user on his machine either. In fact I searched his entire registry for any reference to "draft4" and found none. Somewhere it is buried on the machine and Excel is using it, thinking that draft4 is the logged on user!!!     - Opening and Excel spreadsheet in IE I have a user who is trying to open a spreadsheet in IE. She clicks on the link and it comes up with a "page cannot be displayed error". I am able to open the spreadsheet just fine. The user is able to save the spreadsheet to her desktop and open it that way and also, if she already has Excel open, she can open the file without a problem. Anyone have any thoughts on this?     - Moving Between Worksheets OK, this will probably win the "Dumb Question of the Day" award, but I'm a newbie, so I'll ask anyway. I have an Excel 2002 file that has LOTS of worksheets. I am constantly moving between worksheets, and spend too much time trying to find the right sheet. Is there any way I can add a new worksheet that has nothing but "links" to the actual sheet I'm looking for, maybe something that works like a website link to other web pages?     - Help adding word doc to excel tab? Here is the deal. I have an expense report procedure written in word and the expense report itself is in Excel. Boss loves it and oh by the way can you add the Word procedures document into an Excel tab. My answer was sure and now I have farted around with it way to long. Sure can be humbling when what you though you knew wasn't really known at all. I have tried inserting an object, browsing, and picking the word document. Appears to work but only grabs the 1st page of the word doc. I have tried all sorts of things and I won't even mention most of them because all I manage to get from word and into excel is the 1st page.     - Counting entries across multiple worksheets I'm no Excel whizz as you may be able to tell from this note. But if anyone can help I'd appreciate it. I have 2 columns of data repeated across 5 worksheets (different departments etc, the same columns but different data). What I'm trying to do is create a summary worksheet showing the count of entries across all worksheets where Column1=x and Column2=y. I've tried COUNTIF but it didn;t seem to work.     - The chart that was not there I once opened a large xls file, and plotted the data in it. On close it said that the chart is too big and will be truncated. I said OK. Since then on certain OTHER xls files which are much smaller and have NO chart on them, on close and save I get the SAME message, and it always comes up twice. The size of the file also seems to be quite a bit bigger than they should be. Is that chart fromthe first file somehow stuck and hidden in these other files? How can I check and/or get rid of it.     - newbie questions I'm new at excel so bear with me. I built a sheet and it has a button i attached some vba code to. Now i cant get back to that code, the button still works ok but i want to add some code beyond what is there First... How do i get back to the code attached to the button? When i do tools/macros/vb editor the code isn't there, nor is the routine listed in either of the procedure drop down boxes. Next... I have a text box, can i set up a formula to put the date/time in the text box (or with a macro) can it refresh on a timer (say once per minute?)? Next... One column in my sheet has date/times in it, i want to color the background of the cells in that column based on certain criteria: A: if the date is the same as today - green B: any other date besides today but earlier than today and only the first instance of that including duplicates - yellow C: always ignore the time in this field and when doing the comparison just use the date. Finally, is there anything resembling a hierarchy of stuff? I mean, some kind of org chart or list showing the methods, properties, and events attached to each item on the tree of excel? ie: what methods properties events etc are part of Worksheet? are part of Cells , Are part of workbook? Are part of a textbox? etc etc, with that it should be easy to browse and figure out what you want to do and at least make an educated guess as to the syntax to use. I hate it with a passion-- it's like-- my job for the past 4 ot 6 years.. has to been to run around and fix 'excel messes'... automate such and such excel report it's like-- if you guys would just stop using excel-- treat it as a drug-- and start doing stuff in Access-- this world would be a much more efficient world. it's like-- people _never_ have clean data in Excel... there is no validation.. people use it for data entry; and keeping track of stuff-- and it just boggles my mind that people use this POS program for reporting. I mean-- it isn't a reporting tool. It isn't in the same league as Access and Crystal Reports. It's like Access can automate what Excel people do; and then you won't get stuck writing the same report every week. Why don't more poeple hate Excel like I do? I just am frustrated.. because I've seen enough Excel in my life that it makes me sick.. It really is a drug, or a disease.. And when I grow up; and I'm in charge of an IT department.. the first thing that I'm going to do is to Uninstall Excel from _EVERYONE's_ machine and start with the basics. It's all about reusability-- and I dont see excel having any. And I just want to know why is it that poeple think that using Excel for reporting is an acceptable route? It's like a travesty-- 50% of all people in the modern workplace-- all they do is make the same report in Excel; week in and week out. and I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't try to really help these people to use their time more efficiently.     - Losing toolbars When I open a new spreadsheet, I get the Standard, Formatting, and Worksheet Menu Bar toolbars. When I leave the application, then come back to it, I lose them, and only have the Name Box and Formula Bar beneath the Title Bar. At the moment, I can only reproduce this error when I go to another desktop and return. (I am using Virtual Desktop Manager Powertoy for Windows XP.) I want to know like I can select a word determined in all the cells in which it appears and obtain a diagram of her on the basis of its value of row.     - Clipboard error Hi people, I have posted this query a couple of times earlier also. When I am trying to work in a Java application that generates reports in Excel format I get an error as Cannot Empty Clipboard. There is no 2003 terminal Service running and no Getright installed. Also I have changed the registry so that I use the Windows clipboard instead of the Excel Clipboard. There is something more to be noted that this more often happens if more than one instance of Excel is running or I use option of pasting charts as graphics.
